I know it's early in its life, but can a mod take a flamethrower to this thread already?

If you appreciate cute things, and we can all agree we can all appreciate cute things, what's inherently sexist about cute things? Surely, it's not the girls doing things part, yes?

I normally would keep quiet about this stuff but it needs to be said. Listen, I'm not the person to say wether or not you find these anime characters "sexist". I understand that to non-otakus or people who aren't a fan of anime, these could be seen as a little stand-offish. However, you have to realize that most people who are well aware of the anime culture and are familiar with anime, would hardly call this sexist. I also believe that these anime girls were made with innocent attention to capture people's eyes who normally wouldn't think about the topic they are representing to talk a long look at them and listen to the topic they want to say. However, we shouldn't take this conversation so far as to say "OMG!! TUMBLRINAS ARE HERE TO JUMP TO CONCLUSIONS ABOUT THESE ANIME GIRLS ALL THE TIME!!!" Or say, "YOU GUYS DON'T UNDERSTAND ANIME MAKES ALL GIRLS SEXUALIZED!! THEY NEED TO STOP ALREADY!!" Let's not act like children here. In the ending of the day, there will be people who agree with this columnist's viewpoints and there will be others to disagree.
My opinion on all of this is really, that these girls aren't real. No one with common sense will turn around and say that these girls are real in real life and that whatever I can do to them on paper, I could do them in real life. That is insane. I just want people like this columnist to realize that these are lines on a paper. They won't be real at all. There are people who can separate fiction from real life you know. No one is going to go out and try to hunt down these characters in real life. I also find it kind of odd that there are people or women in this case, in the world that are actually being treated terribly and who need support but you have the time to get upset over an anime character.
This was just a marketing strategy at the end of the day as well. The company or organization saw a well that they could tap into and then went in headfirst. No need to jump around like a monkey without a head. I know my discussion seems all over the place but really, I'm trying to explain myself here. There are people who will still point out flaws in my argument and still make me seem like a sexist women-hater or something but really I'm not. I'm just a women who's sick and tired of all these other women or so-called "feminist" jumping on everything and calling it sexist or any other sexist term. Can we just call it a day? There are people who enjoy this stuff really. Even women like me. Can they be seen as sexist? "Yes". But that doesn't mean you have to kill off everything like it. I'm sure you have better things to do then jump on some wagon like this. Go help put real life people or women in the world who need support instead of turning around and fighting drawings. Seriously.
I just want this maddness to end.
Rant over.

Yeah, the fact there is no such thing as a "cute boys doing cute things" genre should tell you volumes. Of course, there is nothing inherently sexist about "cute things," it all depends on context. Very frequently, "cute girls doing cute things" shows depict female characters doing things that make them look silly (in a cute way), frivolous or otherwise just not particularly effective. There is a condescension and patronizing tone that is inherent. Those shows are designed to appeal to males and the message is, "aw, look at these little darlings ... aren't their antics just adorable?" Of course that's sexist. Come on.

Oh gosh I'm gonna regret this.
I agree with Blood-, and I'm glad there's someone else that can think about this logically.
Japan's trend of making anthropomorphic moe girls for every campaign under the sun is inherently sexist. There, I said it. It's really only a step away from having bikini girls for everything, except it's the girls' cuteness and helplessness being exploited instead of their boobs. Is it fun as hell anyway? Absolutely. but it's still using women as objects for advertisement.
And for all y'all saying "But there's cute bishounen too!" Yes, but not anywhere remotely on the scale that there is cute moe girls. It is not remotely equal.
I also wanted to point out this part of the article which I found interesting:
Quote: | Morooka said sorori kao depictions have a bad reputation among adult women. She said the representations rely on old-fashioned concepts of beauty that "stimulate men's sexual desires." She added that some men have also recently criticized such passive and submissive facial expressions on depictions of women. Morooka said sorori kao depictions are a step backwards in the present "gender-conscious age." |
Because I've been kind of wondering this for a while. It's rather like how so much of Japanese porn features women pretending not to enjoy themselves (pretending to pretend not to?). I would like a credible source on this, but I was always under the impression that this was still a cultural thing and it would be interesting to know how actual Japanese women feel about it.
As for why this and not all the other moe on the market? She's objecting to "sexualizing" a government program, which is really a reasonable complaint.

What is Hetalia if not cute boys doing cute things? What is UtaPri? There's plenty of shows with cute boys doing cute things. If there isn't more, it's not because of sexism, it's simply because of a lack of market demand, one which I think is steadily gaining, honestly.

Humor nearly always involves making someone look silly. Plenty of anime boys have looked silly. Anecdotally pointing to anime girls looking silly in a comedy situation is not evidence of sexism.

Congrats, that is the most retarded reason i've ever heard for calling something sexist.

Getting off track here, we ain't talking about CGDCT anime so y'all can drop that.
Just trying to figure out how the pictures provided put women in a "lesser" or depased gender role. Because to me the woman just seems jelly cause the girls are attractive and again brings me to my first point of just having male counterpart to fix this whole squabble.

Exactly. I wonder how much the Japanese Environmental Ministry paid her to write the article to produce controversy -- which is the only way government-sponsered moe anime girls are going to get any notice.
This is PR, folks. Gain notice via making people scream at each other.

"I think the notion that only mewling pidgeon-toed girl-children can get young people to engage with serious issues like environmental conservation might imply some deeper gender issues in our society."
"No actually it is you who is a Hitler for implying that the particular type of consumer entertainment I enjoy might have any kind of negative social impact."
(seriously what's up with the pigeon-toed stance all the time, shit's creepy)

Grossly misinformed again. Cute boys doing cute things is a genre, ever heard of Touken Ranbu? Even Japanese fujoshi circles consider Osumatsu-san as a CBDCT show as well. The reason there aren't as many as CGDCT is because this itch is scratched by most sports anime. As those almost always fit the mold. Guess those are sexist as well to according to you.
And condescension and patronizing tones?? Wow... The fact that you associate cute things with condescension is baffling to me. Never in my life have I, nor any other female(or even male) I have ever associated with, have ever thought cute girls in anime (or any medium) were condescending just because they were cute.... Guess it takes all types to make a world, albeit a very bleak one.

Wow, what a surprise ... a flatly declarative statement with ZERO reasoning to back it up. Just the level of logic and intelligent discourse I would expect. You can't figure it out, of course, but yes, the fact that there is no such thing as a "cute boys doing cute things" genre is a huge tell with regard to sexism. It's the same reason why "dumb blonde" jokes are sexist. Because the butt of dumb blonde jokes are ALWAYS female. Not understanding something so basic is ... as you would say ... retarded.

Actually, I find something else in this topic annoying. So adults can't be considered young anymore, even if you're in the 18-29 demographic? Great, as a 30 year old, you just made me feel ancient.
