I respect the choice to have the school close, and although I don't want to start an argument it's just the case that I didn't enjoy the episode. I wasn't breaking up in tears after any revelations; I was just kind of bored, which lead to me getting really distracted by minor things like the fact students where applying to join their school at 4:00AM in the morning. It all just felt kinda forced to me. In fairness here I've never liked Love Live drama, episodes 10-12 of Season 2 are some of my least favorite episodes in the franchise for example because on a personal level I never found them relatable. My favorite episodes are all either pure comedy(Dog Live), Character Vignettes(Love Wing Bell) or an excellent mixture of both(Nico's Family). This wasn't an episode for me at all, and coincidentally it also happened to be the first time I bothered to check the ANN reaction to the show. If you loved the episode then more power to you! It just wasn't for me. |

I pray this show actually follows through in the school actually closing down as it will bring out the bittersweet emotional journey to a close. I don't want them deus ex machina it with some random loophole that it could possibly be saved like have Saint Snow move in or something. Of course the caveat is if they actually do follow through, will they save showing the school closing down as the TV series finale or as the eventual movie ending?

Actually I feel like I'm the one living in a bubble by liking this season less and less every week. While I love the choice to have them actually fail to save their school (although I'm not holding my breath that that won't change in the last episode somehow) the drama surrounding the deadline felt a little ridiculous. Who submits their college application at 3 in the morning? I know that sounds excessively nit-picky, but between that and last episode being so determined to keep us in "suspense" about Chika's secret move, which was so obviously going to be a flip of some sort, it's all starting to feel really forced to me.
I don't know, ever since the movie, Love Live has just seemed more and more... manufactured? Like, an episode doesn't go by where every single character has to say their catch phrase or do their signature pose. (The fact that every single character in Sunshine even has their own catchphrase is bad enough.) I follow most of the other Love Live media and generally love all of the Sunshine characters, but this anime season especially has made the characters feel more and more like parodies of themselves to me. When the movie did it, I didn't mind so much, since anime movies are always mostly fanservice - but I'm disappointed that Sunshine followed suit from the beginning and was kind of hoping this season would be better about it, not worse. |

I actually love this season more with each passing week. I mean, I kind of get where you're coming from. You want a series that doesn't feel so manufactured. It doesn't feel that way for me. I feel like I'm watching my friends interact. My friends and I, well, when I was in high school always had a saying or two that we kept repeating. I even do it with my friends online. I know that the catchphrases could get tiring but, you guys have to remember, this is an idol anime. I know going in, I'm not going to get the Matrix complicated plot that I expect from other anime genres. On that note, I have to say that what Sunshine is doing is pushing pass their genre boundaries. I was an emotional wreck at the end of the episode this week. I really didn't want them to fail. I mean, don't get me wrong, the deadline thing was kind of unfair. I mean, till 5 a.m.? Really? That was unfair because not everyone is staying up till the crack of dawn looking at schools to sign up for, but I'll let it slide. In the end, this episode will always be that moment for me where everything goes from sweet to bittersweet. I'm glad their doing something different though! I really wanted them to. If they went their usual "3rd-years-are-going-to-graduate" routine, I doubt anyone would like this season. However, they surprised me with this season. They really did. I learned a lot about the characters more than last season, and I saw them actually try to get through this together. This season is always giving me pleasant surprises left and right. I hope they'll continue. Also, from other Love Live Sunshine forums, I think people agree with me. I can't wait to see what happens next. Because, if I'm to be honest, I'm starting to like Aqours more than U's. I'm not even joking. |

I am also with rizuchan in that I am liking this second season less and less with every episode. I have never considered Love-Live a well written show, but I enjoyed the first season/half of Sunshine, but this second season has been a step down.
Episode 8 was actually nice, but it was still not well written and structured. The reason why I liked this episode is because it focused on Ruby and Dia, and they are among my favorite characters. I might be unpopular with this opinion, but if I were to grade season 2 of Sunshine, I would give it 6/10. |

Could you elaborate on that? What did you find lacking about the writing both overall compared to previous seasons and specifically regarding the most recent episode? |

If I'm not mistaken, the scene on the bench with Ruby and Dia reused the music from Mari & Kanan's reconciliation scene in the first season (the one with the "hug!" flashback). This week's episode-specific merch is a stacking mug set, perfect for tea, coffee, or hot cocoa when you're standing in the Hokkaido snow in just a short little skirt, because, why, I don't even… |

I might be stepping into a land mine by trying to have a conversation with you, but here it goes. The very first Love-Live season had a simple premise with not very developed characters. But I kind of liked it because I like rooting for characters that have dreams. The story was simple but understandable because it is slice of life, and there was a progression in the story. Then the second season came, and it was a pain to watch because the writers had run out of ideas, and they just manufactured silly drama. I have no opinion on the movie because I never watched it. When the first season of Sunshine arrived I had little desire to watch it, but after it found its footing the characters started to grow on me. The story was also simple, but it had a clear purpose and goal. When the current season was announced I was looking forward to see more of the characters I have come to like, but like season 2 of the original LL, season 2 of Sunshine has little imagination and progression in the already thin narrative. The only things that keep me watching LLS is Dia's tsundere attitude, Ruby's sweetness, Hanamaru's weirdness and Yohane's chuunibyou. You used to be cool and eccentric, but now she is kind of boring. I will give the writers credit though for making Chika likable in season 2. The last episode was a highlight because it is pretty clear why they went to Hakodate, and we got to see some compelling drama. And I will not lie, the porn doujinshi of Ruby and Dia is attractive to me. Watching Ruby and Dia have a touchy moment gave me yuri vibes. That is wrong in several levels, but the rotten otaku in me reacted to that. I hope this explanation was elaborate enough because I don't feel like replying back. |

^Thanks for elaborating on that. While I don't entirely agree, I've seen that line of criticism at least with regard the original's second season, so I can see where you are coming from on that.
I was more asking why you felt this episode, despite being a highlight, was nonetheless still not well written and structured. I'm not sure how that squares with the episode showing us some compelling drama. |

I'll go against the grain as a the only 60 year old+ half Japanese old fart on here, but I can say I am really pleased with the direction LLS S2 is going. One of the things I hate with the original series was it was too light and fluffy. Seeing a little more down to earth (not to say many of previous antics were that) makes this season feel a little more real and relatable.
A side note, my wife of near 45 years is from Sapporo, and commented that while girls/women wear longer skirts and dresses up north, the only time she would see a short skirt in the colder months was usually Tokyo gal types who sisn't quite get how cold Sapporo really is. (Hakodate granted is a bit southeast of Sapporo, but feels colder with the ocean winds). |

I am perplexed about the grade for episode 9. Bamboo had several problems with it, but she still gave it a B. Shouldn't the grade be a C?

She didn't really detail her reaction to the song, so that may factor into it, to put it lightly. |

True to the "men don't exist in the Love Live! universe" theme, all nine of the committee members are women.
This week's episode-specific merch is, of course, the snow globe. |
