This is interesting news but I thought the reason Free! wasn't licensed yet was because companies were classifying it as a "sport" anime. (Some people call it a "slice of life" anime) I was under the impression that Funimation wouldn't license any more Sports anime after the whole issue with "Big Windup!" I'm glad it's getting a release. Let's hope that the first season is licensed as well. Would be nice if a publisher would license the novel.

A nice change of pace, for Funimation. Too often they license things that I don't like.

There. Fixed it.

LOLOL. I didn't even specify which low-end fanservice titles I was referring to. What are you offended over?

Not a show I'm interested in (might give it a chance someday) but I'm happy for the fans who will now get to own a copy of it. Smile

(plus things were getting getting a bit stale with Sentai always getting these type of shows)

If fanservice was the main reason this was licensed (and ignoring the sports element) hopefully Wanna be the Strongest in the World can get licensed too.

I think my mind just exploded from how awesome this is!
Truth be told I didn't think anyone would license it since it technically is a sports anime but I'm so glad to be wrong! That makes two sports anime this year to get licensed for home video release! It's like a dream come true!

Here's hoping for that season 1 announcement soon and maybe some more sports anime licenses on down the line. I know I'm going to do my part and buy it (and Haikyu!) when it's released. Maybe I'll buy 2.

The did license Bamboo Blade, which could be seen as a much of a sports anime as Free! is.

I expect Funimation sees this one as more of a "female appeal" title than a sports anime.

No doubt they'll probably get the rights to Kuroshitsuji: Book of Circus. Anything to sell and make money.

Provided that Aniplex is merciful, that is.

Justin Rojas in an interview on "That Anime Show" podcast said Bamboo Blade did badly for Funimation but not as bad as Big Windup! as Big Windup! did very, very badly.

I do not think Free! was licensed as a sports anime. I think it was licensed as a popular fan service anime and that is probably how it is going to be marketed as.

To be quite honest, it's true that Free! is in the sports genre, but there is more to it than just sports and swimming. Free! has a storyline, and a plot, and yes, they have those awesome triceps!! <3 <3... uhh..anyways lol...

I can definitely see this being passed as a fanservice anime, but I am believing that it will do well even in the sports anime genre. I really do believe that there are a lot of fans out there both females and males who do like this series.

*Now if only someone will license KnB...*

I'm interested in getting it if they (or anyone) has season one as well. Otherwise I can't see the point of having only the second season.

Free! (pt2)'s licensed! That's nice to see.

Oh.

Funi...

Oh well...

I did want to buy a US release of Free!, but that's less likely to happen with Funimation being the one who grabbed the license. They're going to have to do a really good job to get me to reconsider that.

With all the hoopla this series has, I'm surprised it took this long for a NA company to license it. I'm ready for the next water time.

My thoughts exactly. I'm a bit surprised they've licensed season 2 before it's even begun to air while not announcing a license acquisition for season 1. Curious, that, but I'm confident it'll follow suit. Rolling Eyes

With FUNi I feel reassured the series will be treated well and see a lovely release, so while my wallet's whimpering in the background my heart is singing LMAO.
