I feel that the things that Bondrewd did to Mitty, Nanachi, and later Prushka were much, much worse than Wazukyan using Irumyuui's "children" to cure the villager's infection from the pseudowater. If Made In Abyss went too far with Wazukyan's actions, then surely Bondrewd's actions were even more so.

Bondrewd a character more than willing to commit evil acts for their own selfish purpose.

Wazukyan, placed in a no win scenario, takes upon himself the ugly choices needed to ensure that others will eventually gain a better future.

Now when it comes to the author, I think he did top himself just a bit with the misery in the Village arc( season 2) over the Soul & Ido arcs (season 1,the 2nd movie / 3rd movie)

Oh for sure, BONDREWD makes Wazukyan look like freaking Santa Claus Laughing

The former treats children as lab rats and sacrifices lives 'FOR SCIENCE' etc....the latter sacrificed lives (very short ones at that) to save other lives of dear friends.

Iruburu is probably the darkest arc of the manga so far. Though I would argue that Prushka's fate may have been less awful than Mitty's. At least Mitty suffered a lot longer than Prushka did. Prushka also lived a pretty happy and normal life until her untimely death. Mitty....not so much.

Personally, I feel like the horror of The Golden City is more impactful than the horror of Bondrewd or anything we've seen in the show and the movie simply because the writing and the psychology behind the characters is more compelling. Sure, what Bondrewd did was horrifying, but orphaned children being experimented on is such a tired trope, and Prushka died before I could start caring about her, so the horror didn't hit me as hard as it's hitting me with this second season.

I feel so bad for Irumyuui. The fact that her village customs made her believe that her worth is entirely based on whether or not she can bear children, to the point that when she's on the brink of death and she can have any wish granted, she wishes to give birth so she won't be abandoned. And poor Vueko, who was robbed of her choice to end her suffering and spent an eternity inside Irumyuu, naming and caring for her dead children.

I care about these characters, therefore the horror hits. Now, since this is Made in Abyss, I just know none of these characters will have a happy ending, and the whole thing will feel like more suffering porn all over again, but I'm already this far deep in the abyss, and just like everyone else, I wanna know what's at the bottom, so I'll keep watching.

Oh I agree with that. The unsettling thing about Golden City is "this is just what the abyss does". Instead of relying on the cruelty of a man, it relies on the cruelty of the 'unknown natural environment'. Which is a much stronger and scarier idea because we don't understand it and neither do the characters so there was no way to avoid it.

That is also true. Probably the worst 'character experimentation' scene I've watched in anime is the one in Shiki. This didn't get as uncomfortable as that, at least....because in that we see spoiler[the test subject bound and gagged, squirming and crying all the way through each and every little thing...until she dies....by her husband's hand no less.] In context of the show, he did it to learn how to save other lives...but oh God, it is very hard to watch on screen!

I also feel the same about that. The idea of shoving children into cartridges actually bothers me more than losing Prushka. It was a horrific reveal...especially when the drawings on "what should be removed" were shown. That made me shudder and it really sticks in my mind for some reason. The fact that the experimentation chair looks like a doctor's operating chair does not help.

Irumyuui and Vueko's arc definitely succeeded in making us care about them so that is also why it hurts more to see, yes.
