I'm watching this on CR (via my PS3), so I'm only up to Ep 2. My thoughts:

From what I could tell, at some point in the future humans isolate the genes responsible for ESP (at least telekinesis). They begin genetic manipulation in humans and things go... awry (the opening to Ep 1).

Around 500 years prior to the start of the series (the opening of Ep 2), those with ESP have clearly seperated themselves from, and then subjugated, those who do not have it. The power makes them arrogant and, basically, unstoppable by the Have Nots. In Japan, this has led to a return to feudal days with god-emporers and obedient (and expendible) masses.

Genetic manipulation has continued. New species have been created artificially. Probably the Haves have started fighting one another because ruling over Have Nots probably gets boring after a while.

By the time the anime starts, we're shown a controlled society, probably closed off to some degree from the rest of the world, but most likely a farm intended to create obedient ESPers: those with power, but not too much power, who will *always* do what they're told and work within The System. I'd guess they're to be like civil servants, possibly reasonably high ranking ones. But not the rulers.

I think the kids who don't show power are killed not because they become ogres, but because they're useless. The farm has no need of useless livestock. If you violate ethics, you are killed because livestock needs to be docile and obedient. Best to nip in the bud anything that departs from the desired norm. The parents obey both because they are the result of the same processes, and also because there is nothing they can do to stop it (or so they believe). There are probably other reasons why they are willing to accept it which will become known as the series progresses.

Saki is in serious danger because while she conforms, it's not because she's docile and happy with The Norm. In both episodes she says and does things that are not entirely normal, but which happen in such a way that the Powers That Be may not be entirely aware of it. Also, she has seen an Ethics Cat (which the kids call Trickster Cat) -- I'm pretty sure Saki's parents called it an Ethics Cat, which seems to be the enforcer(s) of the Ethics Committee that runs the whole place.

The stories are pretty blatant Morality Tales, which may or may not have any truth in them at all, but are certainly told in order to reinforce certain codes of behavior (ethics).

All in all, it's a creepy town, and the sooner some disaster befalls it the happier I'll be. Oh, and I like Saki: she seems to have her head on right (more or less), which will be her greatest liability going forward.

Episode 3

Earlier in the evening, I was feeling a bit restless, so I started to watch some paint dry. That proved too stimulating, so I went and watched some grass grow. But even that had me on the edge of my seat. So I watched the third eppie of From the New World and almost died from boredom. Seriously, if they had spent even another second spoiler[sitting around the campfire talking about "balloon dog,"] I would really have lost it.

Plus, holy crap is that one kid ever annoying. I don't even have to look up his character name, I know you all know which one I'm talking about.

This show started off on a high note for me, but it is rapidly squandering my goodwill.

My only complaint about the show is that the episodes end too quickly. I don't see how anyone can get bored with it, myself.

Well, I guess there are some of us strange types out there when absolutely nothing of interest is happening on screen - spoiler[i.e. kids sitting around a campfire talking about balloon dogs] - we get bored. Go figure. I should point out, also, that people who express doubts about how other people are experiencing a show should probably shut the hell up. If you are gripped with excitement every second, then say so. That's fine. Just keep your comments about how you don't see how anyone can have a different reaction than yourself to yourself.

Perhaps they should have gone for more of a tell don't show strategy, give sumerisation of what they were talking about, like a partially faint memory.

The other thing that bugs me about this show is the characters. Three episodes in and three of the five main characters remain complete non-entities to me (except maybe for the guy who looks like spoiler[he's crunching on Saki] - I am now aware of that single detail about him).

Saki is a somewhat spunky girl. Annoying Shit takes any and every opportunity to be an annoying shit. That is the sum total of my character impressions, so far.

That's another factor my encroaching boredom with the show. I don't need shows to be thrill-a-second joy rides, but if I don't particularly care about the characters, it's pretty hard to get engaged, especially when not much is happening to distract my attention.

Isn't there also a somewhat no it all girl also? Or did I invent a character.

The only reasons we usually have so little effort in making characters ingaging is if a great deal of them are going to die, a time skip or both. Maybe involving giant bugs, we need them to have something to make them interesting. It is kind of like dealing with the silence, you only remember them when you are looking at them.

Yea, for now the series doesn't really manage to make the slice-of-life-ish "calm before the storm" parts entertaining. I think the characters are the main problem actually. They're either totally bland or downright annoying (imho Saki is just as bad as Satoru, their interactions are annoying). The dialogues are pretty meh as well, especially for a novel adaption ... still, there's lots of potential and seems like the introduction is almost over. So, I'm optimistic (I want this to become as good as Denno Coil, at least).

@ maaya - that's encouraging to hear. I agree that this show has lots of potential and I'm glad to hear that the introductory stuff is almost out of the way.
