So many PMMM cosplays. Oh and Sue cosplaying as Kyubey? I'd make a contract with her anytime...
Oh and I love the English voices of this series.

Episode 5 of Second GenerationI must say that I am getting a bit weary of anime that have episodes set in Comiket. It feels like I have been there even though I never have. |
Kinda ironic that the real Comiket starts next week though. It would have been topical for Japanese viewers if they'd delayed it just a tiny bit.

neat!. But just like holiday shows in the US always air weeks before the holiday, so, too would it make sense to show a Comiket episode a week or two early to hype the watchers up. So... the opposite of ironic, it's downright fitting and appropriate actually.

Delaying it would have meant no one would watching it live since they're all in Odaiba or sleeping. Holiday specials air for weeks before the holiday, especially Christmas and Halloween, and this is only the week before. It's a shame my friend in Japan really can't travel to this one, too busy. There's so much I'd want him to purchase. It's a fairly stressful time for those who want to do more than just purchase and relax with your goodies. For those who need to scan and translate, it can be hectic waiting to see what appears, and if it's a decent scan, but you certainly can see more than what a single person could carry at the live event.

I am seriously loving this iteration of Genshiken. An interesting twist on relationship based character development and comedic drama explored in a way not seen much in anime lately; it's really refreshing. This whole season is really centering around Hato (and Madarame), and like I said earlier I really appreciate having an otokonoko in a lead role, even if some of the typical gags are there. It makes sense too as the show has already established its setting up for someone eventually winning Madarame's heart. Can Genshiken really break into that category or genre? Is it no coincidence that most of the main cast are fujoshi? I love this and I'm not even into BL at all (well except if there is an otokonoko involved).
BTW Hato keeps referring to Madarame as a bottom, however this is simply the translation of the Japanese word 受け (uke) which isn't quite an accurate depiction of the seme/uke terminology that encompasses yaoi pairings. And it is particularly interesting when being applied to Madarame since an uke typically performs the female role in bed. It is suggestive that his partner is a 攻め (seme); essentially the aggressive one who takes the initiative and most likely due to the positioning, is the one doing the penetrating. Hato is aggressive, she takes all the initiative in orchestrating their would be romantic encounter, therefore that makes her the seme, despite by all appearances the "bottom" should be Hato.

English: It's pretty bad. The pronunciation is okay, but the tone and intonation reminds me of BMO from Adventure Time. Sue is adorable. "Yankee go home!"
Everybody Falling For Madarame: On the one hand, he looks like a malnourished, depressed salaryman who is barely capable of talking to women. OTOH, he's a sweet, capable guy with a genuine concern for others and decent cooking skills. But Angela doesn't know him that well...so it's hard to believe that she's really all that into him. For all outward appearances, it looked like she was teasing him, and viciously at that. From Madarame's perspective, that was all she was doing. The show was trying to imply that she really felt that way and is aggressive because...all Americans are really aggressive, I suppose. She was kind of icky, especially talking about one-night stands and trying to put Madarame's hands on her breasts. What's more interesting is that even though Hato is interested in him (and Sue totally ships 'em!), Hato spoke up for Madarame in order to preserve Madarame's chances with Saki. Even more interesting is how Madarame saw through Hato and realized that s/he is interested in him! Hato's defensiveness seemed like denial "all the 3D people I've liked have been girls!" While his female subconscious muses on their chances, and whether Saki (or her boyfriend) is Hato's rival. Uh-huh. Hato's internal conflict is very interesting... And it's the show's conflict, too. Can Genshiken, a mainstream, non-yaoi anime, have an out gay or bi character who becomes completely comfortable with his or her sexuality?

Madarame is incredibly moe. It's amazing that a guy who's apparently been watching/readingd so much ecchi stuff is still so... innocent that even Hato (and Sue!) feels the need to protect him from big, bad Angela (disregarding Hato's ulterior motives which are undoubtedly there).
It made me chuckle that the only thing that seemed to really bother Madarame about being paired up with all kinds of guys was the fact that he was supposed to be uke every time.

Do you really think Angela was that ill-intentioned? I would take door #2, where she is more just the clueless American.

I just didn't like how Angela was portrayed. I wasn't offended, exactly, but I was put off by it. They didn't communicate hergenuine interest in Madarame very well, and she was harassing him by pushing her body against his and grabbing him, etc. It made me uncomfortable.

Angela's behavior is actually something that only-manga readers are more confused about than the anime-only people. That is, because in the original manga, nothing special happened between Madarame and Angela during the previous summer Comifes. It was just something the anime producers made up in Genshiken 2.
However, the mangaka liked the idea enough to incorporate it into the Nidaime manga. He only had to make an ad hoc explanation, why Angela didn't pay much attention to Madarame during the winter Comifes.
The reason I think the mangaka liked the idea wasn't that it would make Angela a much better character, but just to get reactions out of people around Madarame (namely Hato).
All in all, filler material becoming canon like this is quite rare.
On a more minor note I cannot think of any other anime, in which the concept of one-night stand comes up in dialogue explicitely.

Totally agree, I think the general portrayal of Angela they are trying to project is that she is the shallow, unfeeling antagonist. She's far to aggressive, they wouldn't make her that aggressive and have her actually have a chance with Madarame. Her behavior is too much of a turnoff for someone like Madarame since he's not shallow at all. I'm not saying Angela is a yandere, but even the most aggressive yandere are far sweeter and more moe. My personal opinion of Angela is that she is a cow uddered pushover and if I was Kanako, as a friend, I'd ask she get her act together or not invite her to join me at Comic Fest anymore. As a story element though, Angela does provide tension and keeps the drama interesting.
Maybe I'm just annoyed with Angela defiling the spirit of Mami Tomoe by cosplaying her.

I'm not convinced that Angela is a typical American because she would have kicked Sue's butt instead because she's much bigger, and Americans don't take that crap.

Episode 6.
I didn't think they would escalate it but they did. Madarame really needs to learn to assert himself. At least he can run fast, being skinny and all.
It is hard to see why they put up with Kuchiki. He brings nothing to the party but gross.
Aside from him I'm not sure how I feel about the Yajima character at this point. Of all of them she really seems repressed in a way that makes her hard to relate to. I guess she is good for illustrating how women can be isolated by their own otaku nature but she just doesn't seem to have anything that is appealing about her. I hope that changes eventually.
