Defending the Destiny plan is little difficult, especially for people of the US, but let's try.

The basic concept of the Destiny plan is that everyone would have a part to play in the society, chosen by that machine based in the genetic constitution of the person. Basically, everyone would have a profession they would do best and having a life without uncertainty regarding their jobs, the only thing they would lose is the freedom of choosing what they wanna do as a career.

This is basically socialism, with the machine acting as the estate and deciding what is needed of the society and each individual, making sure everyone has what is necessary for survival and a satisfactory life, such as entertainment, medical care, food, education etc.

I don't have a problem with a command economy, but the idea that people's role in society can purely be determined by their genes is pretty silly and unscientific. Since the environment plays such a huge part in determining a person's upbringing.

Of course, it's a silly SF trope that a lot of anime have (like Geneshaft).

You're talking about a show where human beings have colonized space, and the most advanced form of armed warfare is large humanoid robots that runs on coolness rather than efficiency...if you can believe those, genetic science of such level shouldn't be that much harder to swallow.

It's safe to assume...such things have been mastered, or atleast been well developed by then.

Fam is one boisterous girl. She's pretty much similar to Lavie from the original Last Exile although more wackier. Its kinda sad though that this series doesn't seem to have a male protagonist so its possible that there might not be any romance in this story.

I liked the simple tactic thought up by Fam to fool the federations ships into shooting each other up by covering them up in smoke and misleading them with false signals.

And looks like Dio from the original Last Exile made it to this series. He's probably the only character who connects the original to this series. Always thought the dude was creepy but he is a genius in his own right.

Turan and Ades are at odds with each other. It looks like this series might follow the same route and could turn the story into one huge journey through the skies.

Artwork is pretty similar to the original. Even the CG effects didn't seem to have changed much over the years but it suits the aesthetics of the anime. I wish I could watch this in English since I saw the dubbed version of the original.

Not only anime. Brave New World is built around similar concepts.

It's not a matter of "we'd need more advanced technology to do that," but that genetics simply doesn't work that way.

Regarding mecha which is purely fantastical: The way I see mecha shows is that they often have a cool flashy component, sitting alongside some commentary on society and human nature. The cool mecha part can be completely unrealistic...it's not really important to the anime's message, and is just there for show. The stuff on society and human nature, though, shouldn't be unrealistic since it's trying to make a serious point. Of course, that doesn't apply to ones that are pure fantastical adventure, like G Gundam.

Well, in Brave New World there wasn't any attention payed to genetic differences. Castes were determined by different levels of chemicals given to the fetus, which retarded the mental development the of the lower castes.

There was no comment on the genetic difference because it wasn't common knowledge when the book was written, but there is an obvious parallel between the society in the Brave New World and one based on the genetics of humans.

Regarding the fact that a society based solely on the genetics is stupid, remember that the PLANT society in the anime was already dependant on the genetics engineering to the point every child was "built" under these circunstances. Also, Durandall was a genetic engineer himself and believed he found the way to control the outcome of the people he created.

Well, Funi should be dubbing it, I would think, so you can watch it in English eventually. The original was actually dubbed and broadcast on TV within a week of it airing in Japan. I don't know if any other anime can say that?

As for the rest of your post, I agree with just about everything you said.

It looks good so far. I do wonder what the relationship between this and the original is? Prequel? Sequel? Alternate world? When I first saw Fam, I thought she looked like she could be Claus and Lavie's child. She has features and personality traits of each.

The opening was funny as heck!

BTW - the full-screen for "Premium" members on NicoNico is very nice! Looks gorgeous!

Yeah, I think Last Exile will be my favorite anime of the season. It's nice to already know that'll be on BD/DVD, too.

Kurokami/Black God, from Bandai Entertainment.

It's a direct sequel, spoiler[but it's set on another planet, which they used Exile to travel to at the end of the first series.]

Mirai Nikki is really good, so far. However, the premise(and other things like the art and animation) bare striking resemblances to last season's Deadman Wonderland.

1) A weak, wimpy male lead, with some sort of supernatural advantage or attribute, who's been (unwillingly) cast into a game of life and death.
2) An eccentric - to say the least - light-color haired co-lead who's infatuated with the lead, considerably more skilled than him, and "protects" him from certain death.
3) The annihilation of the wimpy lead's entire class(es), except for said wimpy lead.
4) And, as I noted earlier, there's similarities in art and animation.

I'm aware that the manga had the same publisher, and the anime has the same production studio(Kadokawa Shoten), which explains a lot.

Oh, and Theron... Screw the Colts! It's all about the New Orleans Saints, baby! Who Dat?!

When I saw the shape of the Fall season card, and especially after finding out the details of what kind of release Appleseed was, I expected Last Exile to be my top series, and on episode one, it looks to be living up to expectations.

My only annoyance had nothing to do with the series itself, but rather with the spacing of the ad breaks, with the third internal adbreak moved from the ED to somewhere between the OP ad break and the eyecatch adbreak. If it was a marginal series, the crowding of the ad breaks could well put me off, but to get Last Exile on my Roku, I'll put up with it.

It should be pointed out for the record that the Mirai Nikki manga came out the year before Deadman Wonderland manga.

Ah! I didn't know that. So it may have been Deadman Wonderland that was actually(most likely) influenced by Future Diary. Cool.

@einhorn303: Same here, I loved the premiere, it definitely looks like Last Exile will be my favorite of the season once again.

The production values and that "Last Exile visual style" already have me drooling over the eventual BD (can't wait to see it with 5.1 surround sound too).

Yup, same as with the first series I'll be watching this with subs as I can't wait but I'm also really looking forward to the eventual dub, the first is still one of my favorite series. Those audio-visuals, so glad Funi's already confirmed BDs for it even if it was obviously going to happen for a new show like this, it's good knowing in advance. Smile

Loved the episode and the characters (particularly Fam, Dio ofcourse was as great as ever!, and the Sky Pirates, plus already liking Giselle but obviously given her quiet nature she'll need a bit more time to really make her mark) and the new totally right (not a surprise with the composer back Smile) music, and still that unique setting and the airships is as good as ever. The smoothly shifting atmosphere of the story as things quickly ramped up was very nice too, can't wait for ep 2.

The CG in the original was great and I think the first series still holds up visually incredibly well even after all this time, and yet I think they actually managed to quite outdo themselves with some seriously stunning CG for the new show and the ships (while keeping the same important style), not to mention how "lively" and polished the animation is overall, it felt like everything was constantly moving. The visuals and flight definitely had me staring at the screen the entire time taking it all in just like in the first series.

Vinamara, as a returning fan you probably already noticed on a second watch but you can also see more familiar old characters beyond Dio in the OP. Smile

Is anybody going to review Last Exile, or is the Fall preview done?
