"You picked a rough time to be into 3D shota."
"Oh, I mostly collect 2D stuff..."

Wait, what? Isn't she basically saying that some of the stuff she collects is child porn?

I didn't guess something like this was going to happen but when I saw Rika's sibling, I caught on right away spoiler[she was female. Probably because, if you think about it, reverse traps are really quite common in anime. There always seems to be a handsome girl in non-harem shows that feature a large number of female characters. I would even classify Ogiue and Yajima as being reverse trap character types.]

This episode had me a little disappointed though. I wish Rika wouldn't try so hard making an exhibition out of Hato and respect her privacy, but she's the one that vouched for Hato's interests the most in the beginning. It's kind of ironic of all the people who wanted to expose Hato to fit into her own sense of normalcy, spoiler[Yajima's the one that's actually doing the most to protect Hato from all the perverts.] Sue can take a lot of credit for doing that too, she's awesome.

It's like Yajima and Rika completely switched places on the respectability scale.

I really have to hand it to Madarame for being so level-headed and calm though the fujoshinadoes he keeps walking blindly into. He was shocked, but didn't actually take flight until spoiler[physically attacked], where most people would have turned around and walked right back out the instant they realized the topic of conversation. All things considered, he's pretty amazing. Smile

And no, Hata, it really isn't ok. Just because some people can put up with it doesn't make it ok. Smile

Episode 7:
spoiler[I'm very curious about Hato's past now...they left every detail about her highschool crush/romance open, but it makes Hato turn into a lobster!

I thought Yajima's story was very cute, and would make a decent shojo manga anecdote. Add some more flirting and a "ends up as a couple" ending and it's a full fledged short story!]

Watched episode 8, but want to put out a theory on Ep 7 because they didn't revisit that subject in Ep 8.

I'm thinking that the romantic experience from her past that Hato is thinking about is similar to Yajima's in that this was a guy who used to pick on her. Hato said she had lots of problems with male classmates, I'm thinking there was one guy who was particularly a pest to her (most likely because of her crossdressing or love of BL), but in the end, right before she graduated, realized they had a unique thing going and the boy realized he picked on her because he was actually interested and found Hato to be someone different and special.

Hato was so quick to deny being in any relationships with guys before because she still sees that past as something traumatic and would never suggest it really was any kind of relationship. But he is still always in the back of her mind because she has so many memories of him.

It's all speculation though.

Episode 8
So much face palm moments this episode. The spoiler[BL talk] reached sky high this episode too and I keep forgetting that Hato is a trap. The spirit was also funny to watch. I'm hoping to see more Sue next episode and lol @ the preview.

Years back when I saw the first season I always thought that one of the anime's high points was when Madarame was holding an abstract discussion on their topic. For example when he was drawing on the white board. It was disappointing that he wasn't able to draw Saki into a conversation like the one he had with Hato today.

So that extended dialog was needed and perhaps overdue. It does leave you wishing that you could get a more explicit statement out of Hato what he/she really wants from Madarame which I think was the point.

You did this earlier too, so I gotta point it out: could you please not use both pronouns in the same sentence? Use one or the other, otherwise it's pretty insulting. Just ask yourself if you would say "he/she" when talking to someone about Hato while she's standing right next to you. You wouldn't do that right? No reason to do it here. Thank you Smile

If Hato were standing next to you, you'd know which pronoun to use based on clothing, hair, speech, etc. Haruhi was speaking in general, so s/he or he/she applies, addressing both aspects of the character. Picking one pronoun seems just as disrespectful in that case.

It's not clear that Hato is even transgendered. Given the female version that talks to him when he's presenting as male, s/he might best be described as multi-gendered. I'm not sure even Hato is clear how s/he identifies. Since Hato is still working it out, I think we can be forgiven for doing the same. Until people in general can come to a reasonable consensus for gender-neutral pronouns, I'm sticking with s/he for Hato when speaking of the whole character and not of a specific scene.

Particularly since both the male Hato and the female Hato seem to have some interest in Madarame. Hato is very nearly a split personality with two and a half characters. (thnx gina)

Now if we were talking about Chelsea Manning .... never mind.

How is it possibly more disrespectful to pick one pronoun even if it's the wrong one? The only disrespect that comes from using a pronoun in a grammatically proper way (he/she is not a word) is when you are purposefully using the wrong one in opposition to someones gender non-conformity. People use the wrong pronoun for me all the time, I don't mind, I know they are just making a mistake.

I say it's insulting because your usage is too close to "heshe," and "shemale" - not appropriate adjectives for someone simply trying to be themselves and expressing it through their clothing and behavior.

Where in that article does it even say that "s/he" or "he/she" are gender-neutral pronouns? There *are* gender neutral pronouns, but they are entirely at the discretion and personal preference by people for whom they'd ask others to use. Let's not choose for them, just use the traditional ones even if you guess wrong.

Furthermore, it's beside the point here whether Hato is transgender, she's probably something different, yes. However, because of the female entity that's present with boy-type Hato, strongly suggests a predominantly female gender identity. She is always there, she just happens to "take over" while Hato is crossdressing.

This has absolutely nothing to do with pronouns. Actually, funny story: I once had a college professor who used "she" and "her" as gender neutral pronouns. Technically they each cover both genders.
