Ah ok, it seems pretty obvious then. Something about non-English words that look like valid English words (and thus can have a completely different meaning) throws me off. L-Elf from Valvrave The Liberator was another head scratcher until I realized the naming convention of the entire faction.

I also never got Gosick. Another was Azumanga Daioh, until recently when I read that it was a combination of the author's name (Azuma) and 'manga', to form Azumanga. Lastly, Durarara!! doesn't make much sense to me. It's really fun to say, but I don't get where it comes from.

Think how a Japanese speaker pronounces borrowed words that has a "th" in it. Wink

Oh, so it's supposed to gothic? Makes sense with the setting. Thanks.

Baccano & FLCL pop into my head for titles that do not seem to have a link to their story/setting. I'm guessing someone will come up with a logical reasoning for both.

The title Durarara is based on the fact that Celty is a spoiler[dullahan, a type of Irish fairy represented by a headless rider upon a black horse]. The title is a Japanese affectation based on that.

I see the connection. 'L' and 'R' are pretty much the same thing in Japanese so if you change the 'r's to 'l's it is much closer to spoiler[Dullahan]. Thanks larinon. Still seems weird though.

Date A Live

The main character dates "spirits" in the show... I don't know what a "Live" is. I came up with two possible explanations, both are based on possible Engrish misspellings/puns and one of those comes from, I think, an exclusively US title of a cult movie from Austrailia (but from a now famous director).
1. Engrish of "Date Arrive" which wouldn't be a bad title for the show, referring to a threat from another world- that you have to date.
2. Engrish pun that plays off the title of the cult zombie movie "Dead Alive"- the incredibly bloody horror comedy debut film of Peter Jackson. And while zombies and zombie references are currently pop culture gold, it's still a cult movie and I believe most of the world knows the film by the original title "Braindead."

but the long and short of it is... I don't really know

My opinion on it is a couple things. That the situation is like a "Live" dating sim, and that that he has to date them to keep people "Alive". The opening itself plays with the sounding by repeating the phrase "Dead or Alive", connecting it to the wanted characteristic of the girls, but finishes with the series name to show another way.

Steins;Gate, Chaos; Head, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Tari Tari .

";" means nothing to me.

as for Neon Genesis Evangelion, the Japanese title makes sense to me, but the English title doesn't.

All i know is Neon is a chemical element. In the Japanese title(新世紀) it says "new world" or "new Century"

I have no idea what is Tari Tari mean.

Ano Hi Mita Hana no Namae o Bokutachi wa Mada Shiranai

I guess it's supposed to be poetic but no wonder no one calls Anohana by the full title.
