People have been whining about unintentionally finding unwanted content on the internet since back when I used to browse it via Lynx on a Vax server. I have yet to take it seriously.

The yaoi is practically being forced on him? How? When I do a search online for specific things I come across both wanted and unwanted results. I then refine or sort the results. The unwanted results don't invade my computer and take it over. Hmm... maybe the yaoi is addicted to him ...

This guy wants more yuri? Well, we all want more free content on the web that caters to us. I wish there was more yaoi where both people are clearly and unquestionably adults. I also wish someone would walk to my door and give me a large pile of cash.

But seriously. Yaoi fangirls have an effectiant smut distribution system. You want more yuri? Take a cue from them and start a blog community or somehow help your fellow fans get organized. They are ways to help it be available besides making more yourself.

a lemon is a fanfic that has sexually explicit scenes...might be totally about two characters getting it on... also endearingly known as smut Smile

Hey Zac.

For us, the non yaoi, non hentai, with lives fullfiled with something else.

Can you give us a break and change the rant topic please? or at least tell me how many yaoi rants you gonna submit so I skip it until then.

I know that you are trying to give the audience something of shock value like "Is yaoi wrong or not?" but 3 issues with the yaoi thing is getting old and boring.

I wrote for you a rant about how europe has much better manga titles that the ones in USA and that USA is flooding the market with all these goth manga and shojo and for the action fan there are a few titles counted by hand.

but you keep beating the dead horse of the yaoi topic, come on man, variety...where is the variety?

please?

Not to flame or anything, but seriously, what are you talking about? Hmm, Naruto, One Piece, Death Note, Worst, Beserk, Tenjou Tenge, Ragnarok, Akira, Eva, FMA oh wait, there go all my fingers, and that's just off the top of my head. And of course Europe has more titles, considering Europe is a continent and America is just a country. Europe has more countries than America has states, so there's a bigger pool of liscensors. It's not all in one language, though, so unless you speak German, Russian, Romanian, Spanish, French, Dutch, and Italian it doesn't really matter.

It's been three columns and you people are complaining and complaining and complaining endlessly. I printed rants that looked at different sides of the Yaoi issue and I got a LOT of rants about it so I assumed people wanted to continue discussing it.

I read your rant about european manga and I'm sorry to say it was neither well-written nor interesting.

I'm getting sick of all the bitching about the column in this thread. I was nice about it for a few pages but you people are starting to just parrot eachother and restate things over and over again.

1. You want me to stop printing Yaoi rants. Okay, done.

2. You're tired of questions about fansubs. Okay, done.

If I hear one more complaint about either of these things, I'm shutting down this thread. Enough. You people just don't know when to quit.

I enjoyed those fansubbing answers you gave. Those complaining are most likely downloaders themselves and don't like being constantly reminded that what they do is wrong, to which I say "tough titty". As for the yaoi, meh, different strokes for different folks and all that. Don't like it? Look at the pretty rabbit and kitten instead, or simply don't look at all. Wink

i agree! the rant column is a pretty new experiment, and i have to say i find it pretty cool. i've really enjoyed reading all the different points of view on the subject. but people are just posting the exact same complaints as the people before and it's like they just hit reply and didn't even bother reading the other posts.

i think the column is interesting, and i actually enjoy reading the sarcastic answers to 14 yr old noobs. Wink the answerman column is the thing that got me coming to this website and i've been reading it for...a year and a half...

anyway, the rants are cool. it's definitely gotten me thinking about some things...to the point where i actually signed up for an account, wrote my own rant, and started posting in the forum...

I'm sick of trying to find fluffy, humourous, not-lemon, PG-13 yaoi fic, and only finding either angst or smut. I've found a few authors who do that, but most do angst/smut fics. I hate sex fic since most of it is cliched and boring. Plots can be original, but if a lemon is original, it most likely is gross.

And I agree that yaoi fangirls who only look for pairings are annoying. I ran into one, and she was pretty hard to talk to. But that also happens in het, and I assume yuri as well. For example, I'm a huge Teen Titans fan, but I have trouble finding fans who talk about things other than the pairings, whic hare mostly het(StarfirexRobin and RavenxRobin are the most popular)! Sure, I have my favorites pairings for that show, but I got into the show because I liked the plot and the characters, not the pairings.

I have to agree with you, I would like to see Zac go back to decent questions

Define "decent questions" for me please.

Anything but the following:

"When will X series come to the USA?"
ANYTHING dealing with Fansubs/AMV and the legality or illegal actions.
"I have this great idea for an anime/manga/hentai......."

I think that pretty much eliminates 90% of all potential questions. And didn't someone say earlier that they wanted Zac to go back to answering when will X series get licensed? I have some advice for Zac. I read you column. I enjoy your column. I have recently started reading the forum to your column and have come to only one conclusion. Ignore what is in the forum. These people ARE fickle. Please one person and one hundred will complain. I'm personnally go through phases were I read forums. This is followed by the phase where I am reminded why I don't read forums. Followed by the phase where I ignore forums for a year or so. Followed by another 6 weeks of forum reading until I am reminded why I stopped reading in the first place. Thanks folks for reminding me why I so rarely read forums. See ya in a year or so.

(Before reading note that I bear no ill will, my tone is completely relaxed.)

I know this reply wasn't directly to me, but I would like to say that as far as forums are concerned I am prone to similar forum phases. (Note: the five posts in around two years) Although, for me, the cause is much like the "brick walls" I mentioned in my clarification of my absent minded use of the word decent. Unfortunately, many seem to be quoting my first statement without its explanation:

Trowa wrote:
I'm sorry for the vagueness, I should have used better wording; decent doesn't really explain anything. What I mean are the kind of random anime questions that used to appear in the columns as opposed to the barrage of questions dealing with the same issues like fan subbing. More and more it seems like you're trying to reason with brick walls. You graciously take the time to explain your opinion on something citing reasons and examples to people who seem to disregard anything that disagrees with them. I just don't think it is fair to you and many of the fans of the column. I am very thankful that you decided to put the "breaking into the industry" questions into the flake of the week spot perhaps similarly redundant questions should follow. Additionally, thank you for taking the time to read and respond to the forum.

At any rate, I enjoy the forums at some point or another and I am very grateful that Zac takes the time to read them. As far as fickle goes it doesn’t really fit when describing an amalgam of view points. It may seem hypocritical to comment on word usage considering my previous mistake, but I try to rectify mine.

I like the yaoi rants. It's my preferred genre, and I like hearing other people's perspectives and opinions on it. I can see how other people would get annoyed with them after three in a row, though.

Agreed. I'm a yaoi fan, but three in a row? It's probably not as interesting for non-yaoi fans as it is for me and other yaoi fans.

Let's see. First about the yaoi rant. I did really enjoy the comparison to blaring rap music while driving down the street. Certainly that sounds like many fans at cons. Though I guess you could apply it on the internet, as I know searching for reference pics you can run into some yaoi fanart.

Certainly yaoi fans have been getting more and more vocal and visable at cons. The stuff is porn. Plain and simple. And again, Gravitation and other shonen-ai is not yaoi. Though certainly it does provide fodder. You don't have just be that blatant about it, especially when it almost seems many of these fans are under 18 or just barely. They turn into a mass of teen girls yelling for gay porn. Geez, calm down and grow up a bit. Then again, I do have a 'tentacle sex' shirt. Yet to be worn though.

As for the yuri.. I'm not a huge fan. I do find this guy's argument a bit weakened by calling for the flip side of the coin. Though I also sympathise that his interests are marginalized while another one is catered to en masse. I certainly do like it and am somewhat of a fan. I find it tends to be a lot nicer than the often more brutal hentai you see in too many guy/girl ones. Of course, I guess the brutality or plain weirdness of some hentai interests me as that's the freedom a cartoon gives, with no one actually getting hurt and the ability to explore some messed up stuff. Still, yes yuri is nice. Yet, again, I don't see a need to trumpet it.

Now.. it seems my friends and I are on the reciveng end of comments by Answerman. Some friends run a cosplay prop company and I sometimes help.

Now where we could run into trouble someday is that we sell Naruto headbands. Yes, we are competing with the legit ones in the dealers room. Though I do belive we keep an ear out for any cease and desist. Also, we argue that ours are of a superior and somewhat handmade quality. We have a thicker metal and more detailed logo. We take pride in this better craftmanship. Also, importantly, each headband needs to be finished and attached to the fabric by one of the workers at our booth (or stockpiled before the con). That is a big deal because, as far as what I've heard about rules for fanmade items at cons, we're not just mass producing something. Though I will admit we are in a really grey area here.

Though the ones that I thnk are much less grey are the headbands with a almost random symbol like One Piece or Full Metal Alchemist logo instead of a regular Naruto one. It's like a signature of Roger Moore on a photo of Sean Connery in metal headband form. It's almost a joke or parody item. I don't see the possiblity these ever being produced by a company.

The company has also made Naurto kunai daggers. Though those might be on hold as they do take a lot more work and the main guys in the group who make them are busy with other things too. I know they want to make a small amount of some other Naruto props. They're in a design phase for that one that splits into four large blades, but the mechanics of it are still being redesigned. (Yeah, these guys are nuts as they make the plastic blades actually move like the actual object. I swear they often aim for movie quality costume work.)

Of course the most black and white legit part of the buisiness is the custom prop department. The main two guys make props to order. They are far from mass produced, pretty much made to order. They are done by a couple of relatively experienced fans who are into making props. I myself helped make that hula hoop from Soul Caliber 3. (Though the guy making the thing said much of my sanding needed to be redone. I guess I fail it at sanding skills.)

The company was thinking of making a number of handmade keyblades. Though they take much work and would be expensive based on materials alone, there will simply not be too many. So again, they're no where near mass produced. Staying under the financial radar and simply not bothering the buisiness of the copyright holder is the key.

We have been thinking about figures of certain fanmade ideas and online jokes. Ones that wouldn't have a copyright issue. We would aim to be generic enough not to infringe on any actual characters. I would mention the first one that might happen, but it's still rather up in the air. I know I myself am dying to see it happen.

These guys are selling their propmaking skills. Sure, the fandom and characters supply fuel, but the drive of the prop maker creates a visceral object. It takes quite a bit of labor plus the skill of turning a two dimention object into a real one. This is something more than drawing a character as a print to sell. (Of course, even there if you draw your own pose and version it's more legit than the lamewads copying poses.) Certainly more than fansubs, especially the punks that charge for fansubs (who I hope are extinct). I find this is unique when it comes to props as it is a more labor intensive skill than even drawing a character. Hell, I'd almost swear they're kinda like sweatshop workers sometimes trying to get their merchendise done.

So there's a view of someone with friends who have a prop company.
