This could go or bad but it's how long until the film (if ever) that gets released is what I would really like to know.

Purple: Well, The Ring worked, because that's a general horror story. The Grudge, OTOH, did at least take place in Japan and have the Japanese director.

Also, I think we're extremely lucky to get such a big Hollywood star on-board for an anime adaptation.

Doesn't matter if it's a big name, if it's still a POS. [Catwoman, anyone? Rolling Eyes ]

Good or bad, (and my money's on bad) there will always be the anime, besides they already did this and called it "Matrix".

True, but that's still an unauthorized bootleg where no one got paid, except the Wachowskis.

I'm more worried about the plot than Scarlett Johanson.

Well...I'm nervous about this. I just don't want to get my hopes up and have them dashed again. Will this film get made: Probably(ish). Will it resemble anything close to the original product: Likely(gutted). It just never seems to work out for these adaptations in Hollywood. So, my expectations are not very high on this one, even though I really like Scarlet Johansson.

Bummer, I guess?

As am I. While she's not the most "deep" and talented actress per se she is good enough to do the role provided the plot and director are on the ball. I think the major might be a bit more serious and layered of a role for her than normal, but I think given the right director and a good solid plot she could pull it off given GITS's setting. Without a good director, plot, and good supporting characters, as they helped make GITS as high of a quality show as the Major did, I think it could be a decent film. It;s not that far fetched and far off from other Science Fiction movies Hollywood has done in re cent years. They can make the world no problem about it. It's just can they fill it properly.

But which GitS will this be based on? There are different incarnations of GitS with their own take on it.

Obviously this'll be a Western cast and setting. No Japanese main names. But the shell bodies could be anything anyways. And as someone pointed out, the Matrix has already shown the way how this film could work. Practically nobody has read All You Need is Kill before the Edge of Tomorrow so nobody cares there beforehand, but people are familiar with some incarnation of GitS so people have prior expectations here.

Incidentally, Edge of Tomorrow is among the Top 20 Most Pirated Movies of 2014:

  • 1. “The Wolf of Wall Street”: 30.035 million (Paramount, Dec. 25, 2013)
    2. “Frozen”: 29.919 million (Disney, Nov. 27, 2013)
    3. “RoboCop”*: 29.879 million (MGM, Feb. 12, 2014; and Orion, July 17, 1987)
    4. “Gravity”: 29.357 million (Warner Bros., Oct. 4, 2013)
    5. “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug”: 27.627 million (Warner Bros., Dec. 13, 2013)
    6. “Thor: The Dark World”: 25.749 million (Disney/Marvel, Nov. 8, 2013)
    7. “Captain America: The Winter Soldier”: 25.628 million (Disney/Marvel, April 4, 2014)
    8. “The Legend of Hercules”: 25.137 million (Summit, Jan. 10, 2014)
    9. “X-Men: Days of Future Past”: 24.380 million (20th Century Fox, May 23, 2014)
    10. “12 Years a Slave”: 23.653 million (Fox Searchlight, Oct. 18, 2013)
    11. “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire”: 23.543 million (Lionsgate, Nov. 22, 2013)
    12. “American Hustle”: 23.143 million (Sony/Columbia, Dec. 13, 2013)
    13. “300: Rise of an Empire”: 23.096 million (Warner Bros., March 7, 2014)
    14. “Transformers: Age of Extinction”: 21.65 million (Paramount, June 27, 2014)
    15. “Godzilla”: 20.956 million (Warner Bros., May 16, 2014)
    16. “Noah”: 20.334 million (Paramount, March 28, 2014)
    17. “Divergent”: 20.312 million (Lionsgate, March 21, 2014)
    18. “Edge of Tomorrow”: 20.299 million (Warner Bros., June 6, 2014)
    19. “Captain Phillips”: 19.817 million (Sony/Columbia, Oct. 11, 2013)
    20. “Lone Survivor”: 19.130 million (Universal, Dec. 25, 2013)

Also, it's too bad Robin Williams can't be in the film. I believe at one point he said he would've loved to have a small role or cameo in a Ghost in the Shell adaptation.

Yeah, he mentioned he'd kinda like to play Aramaki in a movie.

enurtsol: Man, if you're gonna pirate a movie, do it for one which won't be hurt by it. Edge of Tomorrow could've been more successful if those jerks paid for it.

this....isn't going to end well. The only way I can see this working is if it's set in the same world as GitS, but outside of Japan because NOBODY is going to buy Johansson as being the least bit Japanese.

I doubt it will be located in Japan, but that doesn't mean that it won't work. Fictional extra-governmental organizations are quite common in the west.

So I will be quite interested in seeing how they adapt this.

If it makes you guys feel any better, it'll probably never get out of development hell!

If it does, though, I hope they get a more promising director before they start filming. It might actually have a chance.

Well I didn't see Japan getting angry over The Matrix, then why did several Japanese studio decided to do the Animatrix.

I don't see this being like Akira which couldn't get anyone to sign on last time they tried to start it up.

I've read many comments of different sites by people who are upset with the ongoing "whitewashing" of these live-action anime adaptations.

Considering the track records of these being made, and the fact that I can only think of one manga adaptation that was good and it started as a light novel (Edge of Tomorrow) I am not going to bother worrying till I see a trailer.

At least GitS is the type of the story that much easier to transition to different locations, so making them all American wouldn't be as harsh as doing the same to AKIRA.
