Anime DVDs are still popular in Japan???

Is digital content not readily accessible in Japan like it is in the US? I thought that these days the only people buying discs are hardcore collectors who wouldn't bother with bootleg copies.

It's been many years since I have seen someone selling pirated DVDs.

I'm under the impression, from japanese anime magazines, that the bluray sales are still massively important in gauging a series' popularity, and this will probably continue to be the case since the bluray version typically has improved/redrawn scenes and removes any censorship the TV broadcast required.

I don't know why people still do this, this has been established for 2 decades that selling pirated products is an unforgivable sin in any community dealing with piracy.

I would almost accept the "didn't know it was pirated" excuse if the site he was selling them on didn't specifically state they were pirated. These discs are all over eBay and claim they are "official releases approved by the Malaysian Censorship Board," often with alleged certificates and age ratings on them. Rather these are accurate or not is unknown.

Perhaps the Censorship Board's cost to submit is cheap and bootleggers can afford it? I guess the Censorship Board really wouldn't have a way of telling if something is pirated.

Of course, I'm surprise people are even shocked by this. Blu Rays are still essentials for a anime's success with its sales and revenue, not only digital copies.
