Ah yes, this is one of the most curious Ecchi manga I was following. With only the first two volumes to judge, I understand why people would think it's "more sex than story, more comedy than serious drama, and more porn than plot". But believe it or not, later down the line, this manga starts prioritizing something else over the sex. No, it's still not an actual plot, it's martial arts. As someone who has read ahead of this manga as well as checked out other manga by the same author, I can confidently say Rui Takato loves his martial arts as much as he loves butts and boobs. A weird combination for sure, but I think it's what makes this manga interesting. Many volumes later we even get a tournament arc that really seems to be just an excuse for Rui to talk about all these different martial arts he likes. To the point where he even gives lessons on the history of the arts and quotes real-life fighters.
Anyway, back to the fanservice. I will admit it doesn't get any less weird or intense as it goes on, except that the author stopped putting beastiality in it (which makes a lot of sense if you read the spin-off focusing on Sarah). I won't lie and say you can read this even if you don't like Ecchi, because you are absolutely getting hit by tons of breasts before you reach that tournament arc. If not nothing else, you can say it's a different experience than your average Ecchi manga, if only due to how insane it can get sometimes, and how much effort the author puts on fighting scenes. Also, what I’m about to say is both a spoiler and a purely personal opinion, but spoiler[this is not a Yuri manga, yet it still had its female protagonist start dating another woman. Yes, this being a heavily Ecchi manga I wouldn't go around presenting it as "oh-so-progressive", but personally, I still love it for having the balls (breasts?) to do this.] |

Well the title certainly catches your attention. My first thought was "but we already have Keijo". However it seems this is more like Teppu or Dragon's Rioting, but with a lot more T&A and actual sex. The old T&A fighting Queen that is Ikki Tousen is a guilty pleasure of mine. I might check this out.
Well, any interest I might've had could've just gone out the window with the bestiality mention. Really? I'm all for adult titles and adult themes, but yea.....there are limits. |

I am curious if you guys would think which side of the E to H scale this would fall? Is this part of the recent trend of making H-Manga that aims to fall just on the side of publishable in a normal book store. Or is like more like your regular strong Ecchi series that try to be more then just softcore titilation.

I read a little of this expecting a fun ecchi story with some martial arts, but Misora so frequently getting assaulted made me put it down after 10 chapters or so. Artwork isn't bad, but the content ultimately turned me away.

I think it's more of the latter. Beastiality is present, plus like @covnam mentioned there are multiple instances early on where someone tries to assault the MC. The manga gets better much later when it becomes a martial arts manga but the sex in those parts, while consensual, is still a bit too graphic for a normal bookstore, at least IMO. |

I was honestly surprised by how much I enjoyed this series. I have read up through volume 4 which just dropped in English last month, and it does get more plot progression further on. As John stated, it starts to focus a lot more on the martial arts, while still retaining the sexiness.
I completely understand why many people wouldn't like it, there are many hardcore fetishes in play and sexual assault frequently, but the book has so much... heart, I guess? As someone who generally hates rape in stories, Booty Royale is just so playful and earnest in its tone in even the darkest scenes that it's much less uncomfortable than a more serious story. I couldn't help but chuckle when an almost rape scene turns into a wrestler getting knocked out with his massive, whited out dong falling out of his loin cloth, twitching on the floor with a bloody nose. It's just patently ridiculous, but in a "none of this is to be taken seriously" sort of way. The comedy is dark but never goes too heavy handed as to make it uncomfortably realistic in my opinion. To anyone who liked the ecchi moments in volumes 1-2, would recommend picking up 3-4 as well. Also, the art is some top tier ecchi. It gets as close as you can to H without being explicit. |

This manga is not for me, but I really appreciate that the review takes time to comment on the translation and lettering as well as the staff involved. Knowing a title has an especially good adaptation or presentation can make me pick up something I otherwise wouldn’t.

I freely admit that this manga ain't for me. It may for...certain others,but not me. I'm not going to be looking for this one. It may be too ecchi for me.

I do not think this manga is part of any trend. It is just a really ecchi manga that has an structured plot (and not an endless set of ecchi scenes connected by some kind of excuse). IMO another example of this kind of manga is Tsugumomo, albeit that one started more tame and then dialed it up "to infinity and beyond!". One thing for sure, this is the kind of manga that if sold at an average bookstore, it would be inside a transparent plastic bag. |

Oh thank you. You are practically the only author who mentioned that this manga is quite biased against men. I'd like to add that it also takes on a weird sexist attitude towards women, even though the author seems to highly idealize lesbian relationships. I mean, the author strongly shields the canonically bisexual female lead from men, implying that promiscuous sex with men is a very serious blow to female pride and honor, but then Misora gets promiscuous sex with women and this is always portrayed as something light-hearted and cheerful lewd. That is, the author seems to directly or indirectly want to say that the lesbian experience is less serious or full, so the lesbian sex life does not have any social or moral impact on the character.
This becomes especially noticeable when sexual harassment or explicit sexual attacks from other women are perceived as pure fanservice without any consequences. Its rather strange as the manga has an entire chapter devoted to protecting bisexuality and existing bisexual (female) characters are always portrayed in a very positive way. Well, at least in terms of the universe of work, so Rui-sensei seems overly fixated on the idea that all queer women are constantly honry and funny sexual predators. Given the author's notes on the first volumes and my experience with the logic of ecchi titles, through such a weird way, the author tries to keep the beloved Japanese cliché of innocence female lead while adding regular sexual content with her. Which may have some logic for a Japanese audience, but for me, as a European, it seems like weird sexism against both women and men at the same time. |
