This is one of the few new Jump series I've fallen for that didn't get the axe at the two-volume mark, and it's only gotten better at constant escalation. It's been the highlight of my Sunday morning for about a year now. (Speaking of which, the new chapter is out...)
Shin is a good boy. Lu is a good girl. Sakamoto is best team dad. (Even though he's apparently supposed to be younger than me. I feel old now.) The SPYxFAMILY parallels are a lot more obvious to me now that the anime has started, but knowing that now doesn't diminish how much fun I've had with it overall. The way Shin's mind-reading is integrated with the paneling is probably my favorite running gag. He is our fourth wall.

Not gonna lie. Seeing Japanese Dilbert got my attention and he's an assassin well. I'd watch the anime if it happens.

The first time I saw this series, the only thing that came to mind is that whatever anime adaptation it's going to get really must do justice to the action scenes.
In a technical sense, anime adaptation-wise, this will be One Punch Man 2.0. |

Does anyone else think Sakamoto kind of looks like Coach Anzai from Slam Dunk? Been on my mind ever since I started seeing the promos for this manga.

That made me laugh because she was a very unecessary character (basically same traits as Sakamoto's wife but annoying), has been massively unpopular spoiler[and thankfully hasn't appeared since]. Chapter3 really was a low-point of the series but thankfully it picked itself up afterwards and became one of the best series in WSJ right now. Certainly has some of the absolute best fights with some incredible action-artwork. And I love Lu as the actual female lead, she is a ton of fun. |

Chapter 3 was the moment where the series decided to take the action route instead of staying with the comedy / gag route. And I think it was a good decision because the author is better displaying action scenes than comedy (and drawing characters is not his forte).
Of course, there will be comedy spoiler[(like when Sakamoto fights grandmas from Hell or the clueless sniper)] but Sakamoto Days is nowadays an action series. |

This is good to know. I read the first preview chapter on Viz's website the other day, and while it was good, it just wasn't good enough to get me to add it to my already chock-full manga pile. The action scenes didn't do as much for me as the comedy, so given your comment, I feel more like I made the right call about passing on this series. |

I think what makes Sakamoto Days still work as a comedy is how it finds the humor in the escalation itself. The tendency for action series to constantly one-up themselves becomes the joke, and its roots as a comedy series means it can get away with stunts that a more "grounded" action series could never pull off. The question is never "who lives and who dies" but, "okay, how are they getting out of this one?"

I disagree—I think it was always intended to be an action comedy, in the vein of Gintama. I’m not a big action or Kung Fu live action movie fan, but even I can appreciate that Sakamoto Days has homages aplenty. Some readers have pointed out specific scenes and stunts incorporated into the manga. As for Gintama, the cast mirrors Gintama’s cast: “retired” fighter, kid named Shin, Chinese (styled) girl. But it’s heart is a loving parody of action films, but funnier, just like Spy x Family lovingly parodies Bond films. |

Action comedy, yes. But the first episodes were Comedy action*. Sakamoto wearing an anime mask, terrorists avenging "axed" manga series, the policewoman… and then suddenly, in the next episodes, voilá, head-cutting assassins. And, as every who follows the series through MangaPlus/Viz's Shonen Jump knows, fights will escalate. But as someone say, in a "how they will survive this" manner, still, be warned spoiler[ that heads will roll (among other body parts)] * An example of the comedy-action: Witch Watch also has fights, but it is mostly a comedy manga. |
