Of course you want to play it. The Trails games are noted for having intricate plots, well-developed characters, and an incredibly detailed world. Plus, the fact that it's from Falcom means it's guaranteed to have a great soundtrack. If that's not enough, XSEED is a tiny company that works hard to provide quality translations for games that no other company is willing to bring over.

If anything, the real question is, will you have finished Trails in the Sky SC by the time Cold Steel comes out?

OH FALCOM
YES
im sold already (lmao)
I'm all up for some solid story and characterisation, I was a bit disappointed in Ys: Memories of Celceta ending tho, but that soundtrack was beautiful.

I'm grateful for XSEED, but they're NA publisher and I live in Australia so all i care is the European releases (NISAmerica/Rising Star/IdeaFactoryInt etc) lol

and no, I haven't played that game you mentioned. If i were to buy this, this would be the first game I'd play from the series. I hope it wont impact my understanding of the game so though......

Between Falcom's Trails and Ys series, I usually think of Ys as being the series that focuses on gameplay while Trails focuses on story. The Ys games have perfectly decent plots that mostly serve as a setup for killing tons of monsters, while the Trails series has much more detailed stories and turn-based combat.

To say the Legend of Heroes has a convoluted history would be a serious understatement. The "Trails" series is a sub-series of LoH, and all of the Trails games are set in the same world; Trails of Cold Steel is actually the seventh one in the sub-series, but it is designed to be a pretty good entry point for people who are new to it, which is why XSEED skipped a few games and decided to localize it.

So there's no harm in starting with ToCS, but if you feel like playing 120+ hours of oldschool RPG goodness, Trails in the Sky and Trails in the Sky SC are the first two in the series and are available for Windows/PSP/Vita.

I second Vanadise's recommendation. It feels good to play them in the era when almost every RPG tries to be action oriented.

Very well, thank you for your insight.
It's written there that xseed is planning to localise the sequel game, and i guess in knowing that I may would like to invest. Hopefully though I'd have enough cash to preorder this, as I'm also investing in other games out 2016 huhu Cool Cool Cool Cool

Disappointing though that this trailer shows very little actual gameplay. It's all special attacks, and a few character portraits.
Then again, I don't recall the last time I saw a game trailer that did.

What I'd like to know is how ToCS compares to TitS. TitS's Liberl setting is very nice and friendly, but all I know of Erebonia is "military, military, military". Part of that is my current replaying of TitS FC, but the blurb quoted here doesn't really say otherwise, nor does the abundance of uniforms in the trailer. While it might be interesting to see the Trails world from the bad guys' perspective, will that perspective be as fun as the good guys'?

As for Falcom = awesome music, that's true for the Ys games, but TitS FC's soundtrack (at least the PSP version's; don't know about the new PC one) is worse than subpar for them. I hardly ever turn off a game's music completely, but I've had other music on most days of this week while playing TitS FC.

Is there a Vita version of TitS FC, btw? I've heard that XSeeD made some improvements to the game for the PC version, but I don't Windows. A Vita version might be reason to buy the game a second time though.

Cold Steel's OST is amazing. Trust me.
Also, you don't need to have played the Sky games to get into this one, thankfully.

Hi,

You do realize of course that the PS3 and PS Vita are region free, right? You can purchase the North American version (Probably cheaper too!) and play it on your PAL Australian PS3/Vita

That only works for physical releases. Downloads are still region locked. It is possible to connect to different regions' PSN Stores, but that requires some trickery/jumping through hoops that not everyone is able or willing to do. You need a valid N-American address and either a matching N-American creditcard or N-American PSN gift cards. For Vita you also can only have one PSN account per memory card, so if you want to use both the N-American and European/Australian PSN Stores, you'd need either a second one of those expensive memory cards or reformat the one you have.

Hi, yes I know that, I've had my PSVita for a few years now.

Unless the game doesnt get a PAL release at all I would import, but I'd rather not waste anymore money buying an additional memory card for additional DLCs and update for a game. Memory cards are expensive and is quite a hassle. I don't mind waiting a few weeks/months for the game to be released for Aus after America.

Don't forget if I were to import i'd have to pay shipping fee and probably additional tax and if there are any DLCs/updates I'd have to purchase another memory card and create a US PSN account which would be equivalent (or even more) to a retail price if i could buy it down here.

NISAmerica has licensed this game for PAL release, so it wouldnt be a problem for me, the date of release for us is still TBC.

Smile

I don't know everything about Cold Steel, but I think one of the major issues in the game is the class divide. The first game takes place in a military academy where the aristocracy and the rest of the population is divided into separate classes, and the main party is the first class to be made up of both aristocrats and commoners. I feel like the main character's class situation is kind of complex, but I might be misremembering. I've been trying to avoid spoilers so I can go into it blind like with Trails in the Sky.

There's a version of Trails in the Sky FC on PSP/Vita for sure. That's how I played it. However, it's not the Vita-exclusive Trails Evolution game that came out a year ago or so, the one with voice acting outside of battle scenes, if that's what you're talking about. After watching some of the Evolution gameplay, though, I have to say I'm partial to the original PSP version's art style and even the voice-less cutscenes, weirdly enough. So, yes, I'd fully suggest getting the FC version on PSP/Vita, and I think it's the same game as the Steam one.

Agreed. It's nice to get both.

Yep. There was a trailer and a few gameplay videos a while back featuring the English voices Smile.
