Agreeing with Agent355 & Musouka, no one misunderstood anything. The argument was that Free! would not sell because women don't buy anime. There was also an argument that Free! Fandom was a western thing and Japanese female fans didn't care.
Granted there might have been different arguments too, but those did exist. |

There was precedent that women bought anime before Free was announced.
Surely you could have pointed to UtaPri, Hakuouki, Kuroko, Tiger & Bunny, Prince of Tennis, etc. if that was actually the argument? Last edited by Megiddo on Tue Oct 15, 2013 7:01 pm; edited 1 time in total |

I distinctly remember several people making those arguments, one of which is a fairly prominent poster who just loves talking about stalker estimates and frequently appears in these threads, and he made both of those argumetns. He strangely hasn't said much about Free! lately.... Edit: Actually, I'm pretty sure he's the one that made the post-release argument CrowLia mentioned. People have actually gone as far as to claim that Free's success is due to men buying the BD, and if it were only women buying it, it would've failed since women only buy DVD. So yeah, the argument did and does exist even now with the series averaging 30K per volume, because some people can't accept that their boy's club isn't a boy's club anymore

Of course we pointed those series out but then we got the argument that these series didn't sell like Madoka & Bakemono so women don't buy anime. I never said the argument wasn't a stupid one but it existed just the same. |

It'd be awesome to see purchases on a male/female basis, but we certainly won't. I'm a guy who bought the first Free! BD. When I stop procrastinating, I'll place my October order with Amazon; it'll have Free! #2 in it, along with several other BDs... |

If they could play their cards right, Symphogear will become the next Nanoha franchise in the realm of anthropomorphized super robot magical girls (plus singing)! I just hope if there is a Season 3, they won't make the same mistakes the staff made in Nanoha StrikerS. Now let us all sit down and wonder why the heck Symphogear G hasn't been given a legal simulcast?! |

StrikerS was a huge success though, selling for around ~20k or so.

Actually Free is popular with otaku which is why it's sales are abnormally higher than other fujoshi shows It gets a lot of posts on futaba and other otaku sites but other fujoshi shows don't really get discussed much there. Free definitely has men helping out it's sales which is why you can probably see it boosted so high. |

This was pointed out in a thread awhile back but some people got upset when this fact was brought up because it ruined their image of the show Kinda funny to dismiss all these otaku fans http://img35.imageshack.us/img35/8065/1wxg.png FYI that's more posts for one episode than the entire thread for the series on ANN so these otaku kinda mean more to the show than anyone in this thread does to be honest. I dunno how people could even argue against it being popular with men. Didn't all the Gou porn tip you off? |

Except that no one's ever denied Free's success among otaku. What we deny is that its success among otaku is the sole cause of its current sales numbers i.e. that women don't have any buying power and the only reason Free is selling is because men are buying it. Also, paraphrasing musouka from one of the thousand threads in which we've had these exact same discussion, men buying Free aren't important so far as Free is targeted at women, the same way women buying Bakemonogatari or Madoka "don't count" because they're shows aimed at men (and more than once it has been said that Free and UtaPri -girl shows- can't be considered true successes since they don't match Bake and Madoka -otaku shows- in sales).

Otaku aren't the sole reason, but they're a biiiig part of it given it's BD sales compared to other shows. Amnesia and Brothers' Conflict's DVDs outsold the BDs over double by comparison so the trend of women not buying BDs still seems true. Kinda sucks we don't have any solid demographic information, but looking at trends is the next best thing. I don't think companies really care enough on who buys their disks as long as they get the money at the end of the day though
Course we're assuming Free is actually a fujoshi show. Kinda hard to tell. Could be a seinen or shonen. Guess we won't ever know unless they make an manga tie-in and see what magazine they throw it in. |

Seriously we had the same freaking discussion in the thread for Free vol. 1 and I replied to the stupid Amnesia and BC comparison back then. Amnesia, iirc, sold like crap, it's not even worth mentioning. BC is a completely different show from Free. Even if it's "for women" its demographic among women is different than that of Free, just like K-On is not targeted at the same otaku as High School DxD.
Also UtaPri is selling way more BD than DVD (I don't have exact numbers, but the last volume has sold around 14K and 10K respectively) I suppose that one's super popular with otaku too? You going as far as trying to say Free! is seinen or shonen when half of the show consists of the camera ogling half-naked men is almost as ridiculous as trying to say Bakemonogatari is josei; even more ridiculous considering the first CM consisted of nothing but guys taking off their shirts and splashing water at each other. You're grasping at straws to try and force your point ("women are not relevant to the industry") when every number is proving you wrong. So what if there is a tendency of women not buying BD? The tendency is clearly changing, so get over it. No one is buying your patronizing crap. |

Here are the UtaPri numbers: Volume One: DVD: 29,771 BD: 35,694 Volume Two: DVD: 11,394 BD: 15,958 Volume Three: DVD: 11,496 BD: 15,951 Who knew male otaku loved UtaPri so much! As an aside, I really don't know what Jave means when he talks about erotic pictures of Kou. For one thing, most of the scant erotic material I've seen for her is written by women, for women. (And tends to feature her with either Makoto or her brother.) But you don't have to take my word for it. When I do an 18+ search for Tachibana Makoto on pixiv, there are 1068 results. When I do an 18+ search for Matsuoka Gou, I get 85 results. |
