Episode 04: Cannot Start the Journey Without a Map
----------------------------------

Summary:

Mukohda discovers he can use magic, but it is pathetically weak. He levels up his fire magic but faints from the strain, requiring Fel to save him. To keep from wandering aimlessly, he buys a map at a pub for one gold, but later learns he was swindled.
----------------------------------

Comments:

I actually just had a garden salad consisting of lettuce, spinach, diced red bell peppers, sliced cumbers, shredded carrots, a little bit of chopped rotisserie chicken breast, some croutons, and a little bit of ranch drizzle on it for a snack. I finished eating it about half an hour ago, and now I'm looking at these freakin' screen caps that are resulting in a grumbling tummy.

I like to think of "drugs" as things that are addicting and generally not so great for your health. Most people would classify them as recreational drugs and along the lines of alcohol, tobacco, porn, or even sugar. I believe this show is teetering the implication that rich, tasty foods as part of that drug category.

Granted, it's a medieval fantasy world that hasn't yet discovered the simplistic delicacies of modern cooking and packaged goods. But if you look at Fel, or even the group of adventurers from the first couple of episodes, it's clear to see that well-made food can have this, almost, supernatural hold, on you.

We get to see Mukohda diversify the menu a little more by presenting breads and sweets to Fel. And pretty much all my caps for this episode were food. Don't let that fool you, though. The humor in this show is just as appealing as its food shots, and I love how budding the chumminess is getting between Mukohda and Fel.

I don't remember which episode it was, as I was taking all kinds of screen caps at work during my lunch break for nine different episodes (five of this show, three of various others). But there was one scene for this where Mukohda was looking through the Online Grocery Store, with Fel leaning a paw on his shoulder and looking over at what was available.

It's exactly that kind of laid-back feeling in this show that I find so endearing. And the fact that Mukohda is still making a name for himself as a merchant, technically through his cooking ability, is both hilarious and uplifting at the same time. A shame he got suckered into overpaying for his map, but he'll definitely make it back, later.

Episode 05: The Goddess of Wind Has a Sweet Tooth
----------------------------------

Summary:

Mukohda discovers a Slime monster which can eat anything. It becomes his new familiar, he names it Sui, and it begins to quickly level up from his food. Mukohda makes an offering of sweet buns to the Wind Goddess, Nenrir, and is granted a blessing. Despite the blessing, Fel is disappointed by Mukohda’s progress with combat magic and takes him to a special area where his abilities should rapidly improve.
----------------------------------

Comments:

I keep taking all these caps of food. But don't let that fool you into thinking the rest of the art and animation aren't any good. We get introduced to a couple more characters: Sui the Slime and Ninrir the Wind Goddess. They're both cool and quirky in their own way, and I like how they even have unique preferences in food.

The dynamic between Sui and Fel is also pretty funny. It feels like when the dog doesn't like the cat, but Mukohda keeps defending Sui because he thinks its cute and precious like a kitten or something. And predictably, Fel gets a little upset at the attention Mukohda gives it.

I love how Mukohda seems to be completely overpowered now, but not because he's strong, or fierce. It's because of his familiars and easily acquired blessings that keep him practically invincible and getting richer, which, again, are all a byproduct of his cooking skills. That's how you combine slice of life with iseaki.

I wonder if Handyman Saitō in Another World is just as fun? Will add that to my queue, now, before I forget.

Episode 06: Growth Happens Out of Nowhere
----------------------------------

Summary:

Fel forces Mukohda to fight in a dungeon and improve his Earth magic. Mukohda is confronted by the dungeon boss, but runs out of magic, so Sui kills it and levels up, allowing it to speak. To celebrate, Mukohda treats everyone to Oyakodon.
----------------------------------

Comments:

Heh, Mukohda is such a terrible fighter. It's also funny how Fel and Sui are just a-okay with the violence and light gore from killing everything. I guess that's just the circle of life in their world. And with Mukohda being able to wield fire and earth magic, I'm guessing the availability of all four elements aren't too far away in the distance.

The irony is that I'm in the middle of playing Octopath Traveler II, right now, as well. And with all the stat boosts the food keeps giving, I'm reminded of the Apothecary job, where ingredients are mixed together to make Concoctions, thus giving stat boosts or relief from ailments. Mukohda is essentially doing the same thing with his food, and I love it!

Blast, looking at all these caps are making me hungry! I actually learned a while back that the Japanese have a term for people who keep posting pictures of food online. They call it meshi tero. Meshi being "food," and tero being shorthand for "terrorist." Apparently, bombarding people with pictures of delicious and delectable foods is a kind of terrorizing. But food is great. Everyone should have some!

I'm actually gonna' warm up a couple of all beef Hebrew National Jumbo Franks, put 'em in top-cut white bread buns, then top 'em with ketchup, mustard, a little sweet relish, then season them with sea salt, and crushed roasted peppercorns.

It is nice to see pictures of all that delicious food. They really managed to make it look mouth wateringly good, though they sure do not go easy on the meat.

That's true to the spirit of the show <g>.

Y;know, this show was never on my "love it" list, mainly because I was pretty neutral about the MC, but now I'm rooting for a season 2.

Ew, now that is a hard call to make for me. On one hand I would love to see more of this, but if I had to choose between more cooking or a second season of handyman Saitou action.....

Episode 07: The Wolf Dances with Monsters
----------------------------------

Summary:

Fel insists on a shortcut through Griffin territories. Along the way, Mukohda discovers rare healing mushrooms, when Sui eats one and gains a skill to produce multiple types of healing potions. They encounter a caravan under attack by bandits, save it, and the owner, Lambert, invites them to Karelina.
----------------------------------

Comments:

After watching a bunch of other shows with okay production values, coming back to this felt like such a huge gap in quality. I can't believe how much better this looks than, at least, nine other shows from the Spring '23 season, when all this one does is show food and fantasy creatures. And the actual animation of Mukohda prepping the food feels even higher quality than some of this season's Opening sequences. It's crazy how good MAPPA is.

The fight between Fel and the griffin was pretty exciting. I know I keep talking about how food is great and that the show really emphasizes the power of taste to hell and back. But since reviewing the last couple of episodes a few weeks back, just watching this, again, felt like such a relief. I wasn't even actively looking to review this tonight, but I'm glad I did. It's not just the food theme, but so many other little things like the production value, voice acting, and overall tone of this show that made my busy and tiring day a little better.

I do a lot of things to maintain a certain kind of equilibrium in my life. A lot of that involves stuff at home life, on this site, at work, and, most importantly, for myself. I've talked about how much I love food all over these reviews. And as much as I'd like to be able to cook delicious meals, I actually hate the prospect of doing all the dishes afterwards.

Making good food also requires good ingredients, which I don't really wanna' spend the money on, right now. In addition, I hate going to stores because most of the people around here suck at driving, and I can't be bothered to be surrounded by idiots on the road. Hence, eating out, and occasionally my mother's cooking, is the only real effort at "delicious" food I can get, these days.

And wouldn't you know it, another episode of this show reviewed, another instance of "food caps make Tony hungry again."

Episode 08: All of the Boss Monsters are Tasty
----------------------------------

Summary:

Arriving at Karelina, Mukohda discovers his Adventurer’s membership has been revoked, renews it, then is forced to take a quest to fight goblins to raise his rank. Sui hunts the minimum for the contract, but goes overboard and evolves, again. Ninrir enjoys her latest offering of egg pudding, but her joy attracts the attention of other goddesses.
----------------------------------

Comments:

So after finishing the previous episode's review and claiming I try to take care of myself and saying I'd get something to eat. Instead, I did more summary editing and episode re-watching, and here I am not taking care of myself while starving -_-.

On an ironic note, with this episode featuring karaage, I'll be eating some leftover Ghost Pepper chicken wings from Popeye's, afterwards. I couldn't get as good a capture of the karaage when they presented it because I felt the subtitles overlapped in a tacky way, and I didn't wanna' have untranslated Japanese on the screen, either, so I got some shots of the karaage with no text whatsoever. Oh, what it must've felt like to smell and taste fried food for the first time in a world that doesn't know the joy of it.

Sui is actually kind of adorable. Something about him reminds me of a more basic version of Kirby. Ninrir is also pretty funny. But I think I'd prefer if the other goddesses weren't so easily crammed into the character roster. I feel one quirky goddess is enough. Okay, now I'm definitely gonna' go eat and relax, then shower, and sleep.

The food never fails to impress. I also admit that given the later novels I would love to see a second season, though the dungeon adventures can drag a bit in the novels. so I wonder how they would adapt that
