Episode 04: Cannot Start the Journey Without a Map
---------------------------------- Summary: Mukohda discovers he can use magic, but it is pathetically weak. He levels up his fire magic but faints from the strain, requiring Fel to save him. To keep from wandering aimlessly, he buys a map at a pub for one gold, but later learns he was swindled. ---------------------------------- Comments: I actually just had a garden salad consisting of lettuce, spinach, diced red bell peppers, sliced cumbers, shredded carrots, a little bit of chopped rotisserie chicken breast, some croutons, and a little bit of ranch drizzle on it for a snack. I finished eating it about half an hour ago, and now I'm looking at these freakin' screen caps that are resulting in a grumbling tummy. I like to think of "drugs" as things that are addicting and generally not so great for your health. Most people would classify them as recreational drugs and along the lines of alcohol, coffee, tobacco, porn, or even sugar. I believe this show is teetering the implication that rich, tasty foods as being a drug category. Granted, it's a medieval fantasy world that hasn't yet discovered the simplistic delicacies of modern cooking and packaged goods. But if you look at Fel, or even the group of adventurers from the first couple of episodes, it's clear to see that well-made food can have this, almost, supernatural hold, on you. We get to see Mukohda diversify the menu a little more by presenting breads and sweets to Fel. And pretty much all my caps for this episode were food. Don't let that fool you, though. The humor in this show is just as appealing as its food shots, and I love how budding the chumminess is getting between Mukohda and Fel. I don't remember which episode it was, as I was taking all kinds of screen caps at work during my lunch break for nine different episodes (five of this show, three of various others). But there was one scene for this where Mukohda was looking through the Online Grocery Store, with Fel leaning a paw on his shoulder and looking over at what was available. It's exactly that kind of laid-back feeling in this show that I find so endearing. And the fact that Mukohda is still making a name for himself as a merchant, technically through his cooking ability, is both hilarious and uplifting at the same time. It's a shame he got suckered into overpaying for his map, but I'm sure he'll definitely make that gold back, later. Also, we learned rockbird equates to duck and cockatrice roughly equates to chicken. Most of the duck I've had has been the roasted variety from Chinese restaurants. I like how fatty it is, but dislike how much bone there is to eat around. Maybe there's a better way to prep/cook it I just don't know of, yet. ---------------------------------- Screen Caps: EDIT: Added new comments and caps. Original discussion started here.
---------------------------------- Episode 05: The Goddess of Wind Has a Sweet Tooth ---------------------------------- Summary: Mukohda meets a slime monster which can eat anything. It becomes his new familiar, he names it Sui, and it begins to quickly level up from his eating. Mukohda makes an offering of sweet buns to the Wind Goddess, Ninrir, and is granted a blessing. Despite the blessing, Fel is disappointed by Mukohda’s progress with combat magic and takes him to a special area where his abilities should rapidly improve. ---------------------------------- Comments: I keep taking all these caps of food. But don't let that fool you into thinking the rest of the art and animation aren't any good. We get introduced to a couple more characters: Sui the slime and Ninrir the Wind Goddess. They're both cool and quirky in their own way, and I like how they even have unique preferences in food. The dynamic between Sui and Fel is also pretty funny. It feels like when the dog doesn't like the cat, but Mukohda keeps defending Sui because he thinks its cute and precious like a kitten or something. And predictably, Fel gets a little upset at the attention Mukohda gives it. I love how Mukohda seems to be completely overpowered now, but not because he's strong, or fierce. It's because of his familiars and easily acquired blessings that keep him practically invincible and making him inadvertently richer, which, again, are all a byproduct of his cooking skills. That's how you combine slice of life with iseaki. I also didn't realize this till a couple of days ago, but the seiyuu for Mukohda and Ninrir are actually siblings in real life (Yuma and Maaya Uchida). If Japanese voice acting still does that thing of getting actors together in one booth, it could be fun for chemistry with siblings playing opposite one another. Food-wise, growing up as a first-generation Asian-American, despite my parents' Southeast Asian roots (they emigrated from Laos), I actually grew up eating more non-Asian stuff, particularly American fast foods such as burgers, hot dogs, Tex-Mex, pizza, fried chicken, and the like. My parents ate a lot of fish and fermented things, which are not common U.S. variety food items at all. But as I got older, fortunately, I developed a more diverse food palate and am used to all sorts of cuisines, now. I do like fish, but since it's kind of low-calorie, I need to eat a lot of it be satiated, or have some hearty sides to compliment it. I'm not too big on sweets, but I also have to admit I've never had any of the authentic Japanese sweet breads I keep seeing in various media. There are some Asian bakeries around here that sell similar products, but I feel like having one made in the U.S. versus Japan are very different experiences because of industry standards here versus there. Maybe one day, I'll actually find some authentic products around here that are actually imported or something. ---------------------------------- Screen Caps: EDIT: Added new comments and caps. Episode 06: Growth Happens Out of Nowhere
---------------------------------- Summary: Fel forces Mukohda to fight in a dungeon and improve his Earth magic. Mukohda is confronted by the dungeon boss, but runs out of magic, so Sui kills it and levels up, allowing it to speak. To celebrate, Mukohda treats everyone to oyakodon. ---------------------------------- Comments: Heh, Mukohda is such a terrible fighter. It's also funny how Fel and Sui are just a-okay with the violence and light gore from killing everything. I guess that's just the circle of life in their world. And with Mukohda being able to wield fire and earth magic, I'm guessing the availability of all four elements aren't too far in the distance. The trial-by-fire approach seems to be good for Mukohda's training. He's definitely more of a lover (of cooking) than a fighter. But I think he also fails to realize just how much of a cushion he has with his two familiars, Fel's barrier, and Nenrir's blessing working in his favor. The show is definitely more about the food than the action. Although, if he makes big enough leaps in progression, I could see the adventure elements being a little better. The irony is that I'm in the middle of playing Octopath Traveler II, right now. And with all the stat boosts the food keeps giving, I'm reminded of the Apothecary job, where ingredients are mixed together to make Concoctions, thus giving stat boosts or relief from ailments. Mukohda is essentially doing the same thing with his food, and I love the indirect tie-in! Looking at all these caps is making me hungry. I actually learned a while back that the Japanese have a term for people who keep posting online pictures of food. They call it meshi tero. Meshi being "food," and tero being shorthand for "terrorist." Apparently, bombarding people with pictures of delicious and delectable foods is a kind of terrorizing. But food is great, and everyone should have some. I'm actually gonna' warm up a couple of all beef Hebrew National Jumbo Franks, put 'em in top-cut white bread buns, then pile on a reasonable amount of ketchup, mustard, a little sweet relish, then sprinkle a some sea salt and crushed roasted peppercorns for extra flavor. There's a particular Asian shopping strip about 20-ish minutes from where I live that also has a food court. And one of those food stalls happens to serve oyakodon, which I had for the first time, about a year ago. I had always seen okayodon offered at various Japanese restaurants, but the choice was usually between sushi, ramen, or the latter. I eat a lot of steamed rice at home as it is, so I usually opted for sushi or ramen, instead. Then finally, I decided to try oyakodon, and man, was that filling. The version I tried, specifically, was katsudon. Typically, oyakodon uses chicken as the meat, but I was really hungry, at the time, and thought the fried, crunchy goodness of the tonkatsu (pork cutlet) would fill me up more. And actually, I only managed to eat half the bowl. Although, it was also during a work lunch, so I didn't wanna' over-stuff myself and not be able to work as effectively. But yes, these meat-and-egg-over-rice dishes are quite spectacular. I'll definitely have to try the original chicken version at some point. ---------------------------------- Screen Caps: EDIT: Added new comments and caps. It is nice to see pictures of all that delicious food. They really managed to make it look mouth wateringly good, though they sure do not go easy on the meat.

That's true to the spirit of the show <g>.
Y;know, this show was never on my "love it" list, mainly because I was pretty neutral about the MC, but now I'm rooting for a season 2. |

Ew, now that is a hard call to make for me. On one hand I would love to see more of this, but if I had to choose between more cooking or a second season of handyman Saitou action.....

Episode 07: The Wolf Dances with Monsters
---------------------------------- Summary: Fel insists on a shortcut through monster territories. Along the way, Mukohda discovers rare healing mushrooms, when Sui eats one and gains a skill to produce multiple types of healing potions. They encounter a caravan under attack by bandits, save it, and the owner, Lambert, invites them to Karelina. ---------------------------------- Comments: After watching a bunch of other shows with okay production values, coming back to this felt like such a huge gap in quality. I can't believe how much better this looks than, at least, nine other shows from the Spring '23 season, when all this one does is show food and fantasy creatures. And the actual animation of Mukohda prepping the food feels even higher quality than some of this season's Opening sequences. It's crazy how good MAPPA is. The fight between Fel and the griffin was pretty exciting. I know I keep talking about how food is great and that the show really emphasizes the power of taste to hell and back. But since reviewing the last couple of episodes a few weeks back, just watching this, again, felt like such a relief. I wasn't even actively looking to review this tonight, but I'm glad I did. It's not just the food theme, but so many other little things like the production value, voice acting, and overall tone of this show that made my busy and tiring day a little better. It's also pretty neat that Sui can make healing potions, now. I feel it balances the team more where you've got lots of offensive capabilities in Fel (maybe a little defense with his barrier), and then a little offense, but a whole lot of recovery capabilities in Sui. And I guess you could also even consider Ninrir as a kind of support member with her weekly blessing, whatever that actually does. Speaking of Ninrir, I think the seiyuu sibling dynamic really pays off, here. Maaya (Ninrir) is the older sister of Yuma (Mukohda), so I feel the "admonishment" she gives him for neglecting his offerings feels a little more special. Being an only child, I'll never know that particular dynamic. But it sounds fun, either way. I like to imagine the lines for that exchange are older sister being pouty and harping on younger brother because he wasn't being responsible enough to treat her with yummy dessert like he said he would. As for the desserts, while I did mention I'm not too big on sweets in terms of quantity, that doesn't mean I can't appreciate their quality. As a kid, most of my go-to choices were candy and vanilla ice cream. As an adult, I've pretty much ruled out candies, as they taste way too sugary to me, now. And while I don't eat as much ice cream, I like a heck of a lot more flavors than just vanilla. Frozen custard is also pretty tasty, especially when it has chunks of apple pie in it. Cake isn't so bad, if there's not too much frosting on it. And I'd say my favorite is probably a really good slice of cheesecake (plain preferred, but wouldn't mind other experimental flavors). Not as big a fan of milk chocolate anymore, so I try to be careful to not get anything too chocolate-y. And anything coffee or with even a hint of coffee flavor is pewpew. I can't stand the smell of it and think it's even worse than poop. I could go on a giant rant over coffee, but just know I'm not a fan. ---------------------------------- Screen Caps: EDIT: Added new comments and caps. Episode 08: All of the Boss Monsters are Tasty
---------------------------------- Summary: Arriving at Karelina, Mukohda discovers his Adventurer’s membership has been revoked, renews it, gets a guild butcher to separate his spoils, then is forced to take a quest to fight goblins to raise his rank. Sui hunts the minimum amount of goblins for the contract, but goes overboard and evolves into another form. Ninrir enjoys her latest offering of egg pudding, but her joy attracts the attention of other goddesses. ---------------------------------- Comments: I think the life lesson to take from this episode is that: "frying food can make it taste better." To this day, I think I've only had actual karaage two or three times in my life. I've eaten plenty of fried chicken, maybe about half from U.S. restaurants and half from my mom's cooking. I think she normally uses tempura batter for her recipe, but every now and then will also try rice flour and double-frying to imitate Korean style. The scene where the guards smelled the frying for the first time must've been quite the experience. To think that such hot, delicious food could be made out in the middle of nowhere after a near-death experience is kind of a big turnaround. What would've made it funnier is if the bandits caught a whiff of it and were basically being food-tortured from the smell of good cooking. After watching this episode again, I can't decide if Mukohda is lazy or just a scaredy-cat. On the one hand, I can understand his avoidance of raising his rank and level, because the higher his stats get, the more attention he'll eventually draw to himself, which he is absolutely trying to avoid. But come on, he's got (presumably) two of the most overpowering familiars in existence and a goddess who keeps blessing him in exchange for sweets. If all I had to do to maintain that status was cook good food, order some sweets and pray, then cut some goblin ears off every now and then, I'd do it. Sui is pretty adorable, though. The coddling Mukohda does can be a little eye-rolling after too many times, but Sui's behavior is a quirky mix between a baby and a pet that I find pretty endearing. I do wonder if other slimes have the potential to do what Sui does. Technically, we haven't seen any others. Given how notorious they are for being really weak creatures in fantasy settings, though, maybe Sui is just an outlier that we can chalk up to good eating habits and a little lovin' from Mukohda? That red serpent meat looks really tender. The way it moves around reminds me a little bit of eel. I haven't had any unagi sushi in months! I gotta' contact one friend who's really big into food and anime and see if we can go back to that all-you-can-eat sushi place, again. It's actually Korean-run, but for 30-something dollars a person for all-you-can-eat that's also made-to-order and includes most of the sashimi menu and fried rolls, it's a really great deal. You need to be really hungry and go as a group, though. I usually try to starve myself a little before I go there. ---------------------------------- Screen Caps: EDIT: Added new comments and caps. The food never fails to impress. I also admit that given the later novels I would love to see a second season, though the dungeon adventures can drag a bit in the novels. so I wonder how they would adapt that

Episode 09: Hunting Quests Are All About Meat and Money
---------------------------------- Summary: Guild Master Willem grants Mukohda complete freedom within their kingdoms and promotes him to C-Rank in exchange for giving a couple of S-Rank monster-slaying quests to Fel. Mukohda then buys a new bag for Sui, a knife belt, and boots for himself from Lambert, who then asks to buy high-quality monster skins from any future encounters. With too much meat from his recent monster haul, Mukohda decides to cook an overabundance of double-fried karaage for Fel and Sui. ---------------------------------- Comments: First and foremost, Mukohda made a ton of money in this episode. I actually was daydreaming, the other day, about what I'd do if I had omniscient knowledge of everything everywhere in the universe past and present. On this world, the first thing I'd do is become a secret trillionaire and rule from the shadows. The society we live in, today, revolves around money, and you kind of need it to really do anything. He might not know everything, but Muhkoda's got two familiars that basically give him pretty high status in terms of power and what that power can get him. But the great thing is, he's not being an ambitious a-hole, he's just using it to chill, make money, and cook tasty food. Speaking of food, there was quite a bit in this one. And I had to look up the first dish, Banbanji Chicken, as I'm not familiar with it at all. Turns out, the original dish is Chinese (Szechuan) that was later adapted for Japanese cuisine. It's essentially poached chicken that's cooled, shredded, and served with cucumber slices or lettuce (sometimes tomato wedges), and usually made from sesame (goma) paste, soy sauce, rice vinegar, sugar, and sometimes mayonnaise. The remark Mukohda made about them recently eating too much greasy food also made me think about just how good (healthy) a lot of Japanese food apparently is. A while ago, I read something about how convenience stores in Japan have really healthy foods compared to everywhere else, especially here in the States. Around here, you have to go to a Whole Foods or Sprouts to even find something close to healthy and not chock-full of preservatives and other processed junk that the U.S. food industry has crammed into everything. The fact that you can just whip up something like that Banbanji reinforced that notion to me. The stir-fry dish is something my mom used to cook for me as a kid. She used slices of steak, red and green bell peppers, onions, mushrooms, and a sauce consisting of oyster-flavor, salt, sugar, black pepper, a tiny sprinkle of MSG, and a little bit of corn starch to thicken the texture served on the side with or on top of steamed jasmine rice. We just call it "Pepper Steak." It's one of the few dishes I can actually make myself. But let's talk about that karaage. In the previous episode where Mukohda made some at the beginning that attracted Lambert and his guards, I mentioned in the comments about my mom making double-fried Korean style chicken, at one point. Well, sure enough, we actually see Mukohda apply the same idea. I was especially delighted to hear the proper sound effects when he was dropping the chicken into the oil. That's exactly the sound it makes when it's frying, so my hat goes off to the sound designer for that kind of accuracy. As I also mentioned in the previous episode's comments, I think frying anything will make it taste better. Is it healthy? Heck no. But it sure is tasty. I've always associated chicken with being fried, but you can honestly do it to anything if you properly prep it. If I ever get filthy rich, I'm definitely going to make a nice frying area for my house (probably outside behind or on the side, so all those smells and vapors don't gunk up the indoors) to try all kinds of assorted meats. ---------------------------------- Screen Caps: Pending EDIT: Added summary and comments. I started re-watching S1 a few months back and got up to Ep. 8, but got busy and still need to finish 9-12. I'm doubling the the number of caps (took them through Ep. 8, just need to update) and am focusing more on the cooking/food parts. I also revamped the summaries and comments for 1-8. Hopefully, I can review 9-12 before S2 starts.

Such a fun and calming show, the sequel might be my most anticipated for the upcoming season. @Tony 4 episodes should be doable, time goes by really fast watching them.
