Wait, how did it justify the Red Man? I totally missed it, and just saw the identity revelation that seemed to be hinting at another season.

I'm not sure what you're asking about. Do you not know whom the Red Man was? Or are you trying to figure what their purpose was? Or something like that . . . ?

GO READ THE MANGA, it doesn't feel as rushed or have as many plot holes.
Agree with this, I started reading it after the show finished its run on Toonami and found it a lot easier to follow. The plot is still ludicrous, but it had better transitions between scenes, etc. And of course it continues past the anime's abrupt ending.
Though if someone hated the show, they probably still wouldn't like the manga.

Anyway, this series is definitely a guilty pleasure for me. I wouldn't mind re-watching it without the bleeps sometime, but I don't feel compelled to rush out and buy it just yet.

Fair enough. I would warn you then to stay away from shows like Gantz and Rin-Daughters of Mnemosyne if you have an aversion to heavy doses of dark, nasty and bloody.

The ending theme for this series,"Shiny,Shiny" didn't really seem to fit in there. It seemed to me to belong in another anime series, not this one.
I kind of like the song and it goes with the visuals in the ED, but I agree it does seem out of place for the show.

And,the swearing was unbelievable. I'm glad the Toonami version bleeped it out. I didn't think it was all that necessary.
Its a prison, full of...prisoners some who are murderers and some who are actively engaged in killing one another. They are not a bunch of Mary Poppins sitting around sipping tea. I will agree that some shows unnecessarily get the f-bomb treatment. However, I don't think swearing would be completely inappropriate in this one given its setting.

This show was ok for me. The premise was a little ridiculous and I didn't particularly like Ganta. Character wise he felt a little too inconsistent with his personality. The railroading of our main character also felt clumsy to me. I did like Shiro, especially some of the sounds she made which I at times found funny and a little creepy(I watched it subbed). I also enjoyed some of the side characters.

For me the story seemed to struggle with trying to be taken seriously and being absurd and over the top. This wasn't always working for me.

The show did feel a little rushed and I would have liked to see a second season as the ending wasn't that satisfying to me. I still found the show somewhat entertaining if not completely so. The lack of a BD is a put off though. This along with no second season puts it in the maybe buy if its heavily discounted range.

The first thing I did think about was Stephen King's "Running Man", as well as this movie: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0997152/

Deadman Wonderland is ridiculous and overkill, without question; it also, as dtm42 pointed out, is loaded with plot holes. If you don't accept the series for its crass, bloody, pessimistic, over-the-top approach then you can't enjoy it.

That pretty much sums it up.

This show is twisted, insane and has a lot of gore. If you want a well worked-out storyline on top of all that, then Deadman Wonderland really isn't for you.

I'm very happy with this review. I think it gleefully exemplifies exactly what makes DW appealing; it's sick, stylishly twisted fun that if you examine the plot for more than 2 minutes, will fall flat on its profanity-spewing face. And sometimes that's okay.

I am still hoping like all holy hell for another season, but for now I think what we've got is a splendid, visceral experience of the best "guilty pleasure" sort.

I agree that Ganta needed be either be more interesting or be swapped out as the main character. He just didn't have enough flash or pizzazz in him to stand up to more intriguing folks like spoiler[former-cop-turned-blood-knight] Senji, kindhearted-brawler Karako, or spoiler[tragic-Deadman-dad] Nagi. I believe he improves as the manga goes on, but for what we see of him in the anime, it's not enough to really care about him on his own imo.

The dub was very satisfying for me, and I say this when my first impression of Ayres being cast in the main role as apprehension. I wasn't sure if it fit, but in only a short span of time that prejudice was flipped on its head.

I found it obnoxious and try-hard, and I seriously doubt the manga is any better. Last I heard, it was on hiatus and readers were getting fed up with it as well.

I couldn't find a single likeable cast member, and I kind of hoped they all eventually died from some reason or another. I especially dislike the lead, but protagonists never die in these stories. I actually don't find the gore here appealing, mainly because the modern visually aesthetic just isn't the same as the appropriate era of ultraviolence. That said, Blood-C's carnage was still better.

Personally, I feel that saying everybody wants to watch this show for the blood n' guts sort of devalues the interesting character development and world-building that takes place through the series. While this is more obvious in the far superior manga, there's definitely more to "Deadman Wonderland" than gore.

No mention of the Toonami broadcast?

and what was wrong with the toonami / Adult Swim Broadcast.

Sure all the good stuff was severly blocked and all the f bombs got beeped, but it was still a good series.

However the reviewer is right. This series needs a sequel, for both the anime and manga version otherwise it could end up as the same fate as Tokko.

But there was one thing that reviewer was wrong on this review. The character that was fanservice bait was actually that crazy ass warden Makina, not Shiro.

The review mentions how Yo disappears about halfway through the series. It might just mostly be how the ending leaves it feeling very obvious it was based on a manga that went on well after, leaving many hooks for the future left untouched. Those hanging sequel hooks within the story can feel like plot holes.

But I can't remember many specific plot holes, so I'm just guessing here.

Personally I thought the show was pretty shallow, a focus on style over substance. Some people prefer that sort of thing, but I was more hooked on the other anime that premiered alongside Deadman Wonderland, Casshern Sins.

Really? That's like going to a Bieber concert and not seeing any screaming fangirls. If you can't remember specific plot holes you simply were not paying attention. There are endless plotholes in Deadman Wonderland, too many to list.

But I'll list three right now, though if I wanted to I could be here all night.

1): The candy are not handed out in sufficient quantities for the number of prisoners. As each candy lasts three days, that means candy must be distributed to a third of all prisoners each day. However, for a challenge that dozens of prisoners entered only one prisoner even gets candy, and that is the winner, who gets exactly one candy. Even if multiple prisoners had survived they wouldn't get anything if they weren't first. Now sure, dead men don't need candy, but not every challenge is a 99%-fatal deathtrap. If a super-hard challenge only gives out one candy as a prize then the easier challenges won't be giving out any more than one. Also, there must be a limit to the number of challenges per day. Therefore, there isn't enough candy to go around, not by a long shot.

2): People are generally stupid, but surely the viewing public would have noticed something was very wrong with the challenges. Namely, that there was a huge amount of blood and limbs flying around. Even if the audience were told it was all fake the carnage was clearly too real to be staged. I mean, what did they think those were, stunt limbs? And in what modern society would this kind of gruesome 'sport' be considered acceptable for child viewing? Even wrestling isn't this graphic.

3): The super-secret block is easier to get in and out of than a porn star's well-lubed you-know-what. Seriously, the security is appalling. In fact, the security in general is appalling, allowing dangerous prisoners to wander around the facility unsupervised. Who cares if they need the candy and so cannot escape; they could still kill guards and steal weapons and make general mayhem. And of course, the white-haired girl does whatever she pleases and guards barely bat an eyelid. But that's a whole 'nother issue. Ugh.

There, that's three from just the first two or three episodes.
