Yeah, I'm pretty shocked that had her as a surprise too, seeing the draw she is. I was all but certain they'd somehow convinced Mari to show up for DYRL or something. Though Kanno made the most sense, it's just amazing they kept it secret.
I'm just hoping these talented ladies make it back to the states again soon. I can't think of anything else making up for this one.

If I had known, I'd found a way to get there no matter what. Please come back to the United States again on the East Coast.

Why didn't they announce it beforehand?

Talk about a c**k-block. I expected the Frontier thing to suggest we'd be getting more Macross.

They probably didn't want to over pack the room, along with it's Yoko Kanno - she seems to be a very unique person (I can't think of a good term here - lets just say she just does here own thing a lot). She may not have wanted to commit to the concert until the last minute. It's hard to tell what was going with this.

The Nokia Theater wasn't filled to capacity, the concert was a ticket-only event. The orchestra section was nearly filled, but the Loge and Mezzanine sections were completely empty.

Anyone who was caught photo taking or video recording was immediately escorted out without refund. The staff and the video screens constantly warned us beforehand not to take photos or record video.
My memory of the order of the songs they sang is a little vague
The concert began with May'n and she sang a long stretch of songs and a few outside of Macross Frontier (The only outside one I recognized was Kimi Shinitamo Koto Nakare from Shangri-La)
Megumi was introduced at the beginning of "What 'bout my star" and they sang the song together with Megumi dressed in a frilly blue and yellow stripe dress.
May'n exited then Megumi sang some songs including one she said was her latest single (I forgot the name already). One funny thing is that she forgot one of her lines singing "Ninjin Loves You Yeah!!" and she sang a modified verse of it in english singing something like it was her first time in Los Angeles, so far away from Japan, being happy to be here. That was a nice touch.
On the stage there was a grand piano and the only person that I could think of as the "Mystery Guest" was Yoko Kanno but I thought "No way, they couldn't have been able to woo all THREE of them together in Los Angeles"
but sure enough when Megumi Nakajima was singing "Seikan Hikou" she introduced Yoko Kanno.
She sang with Yoko Kanno playing on the piano several songs including "Aimo" "Voices" and another song (Sorry, I don't know any of the songs from the other Macross series, but most of the crowd sure did as they roared into applause upon hearing the first few notes Yoko Kanno played for each song)
The moment that took my breath away was when May'n and Megumi together sang "Diamond Crevasse" with only Yoko Kanno playing the piano.
The concert concluded with May'n and Megumi singing LION then Triangler.
The concert made my day at AX (because it was the only thing that immediately turned me completely around from 99% NOT going) and was worth the extra $30.

So unfair. I hate being poor. And California being 3/4 of the way across the continent

I'm surprised at people blaming Anime Expo for not announcing Yoko Kanno was there. I'm sure they would have, knowing the big draw she would have been. However, I'm sure that she just didn't want to deal with the stress of having a panel and having autograph sessions, which all Guests of Honor have. Anyways, it was one very, very, very pleasant surprise (probably the loudest the concert ever got in terms of cheering ) when she got on stage (and danced along with Seikan Hikou, very very adorable)

In one episode of AX Live when they talked about May'n and Megumi Nakajima's concert, they said that AX was not allowed to tell who the secret guest is.
I think pepperonipizzapie is probably correct, that YK just wants to drop by quickly and do the performance then left again without being have to do panels/autograph sessions.
Or she just likes being secretive as always.

It's not expensive dude. I live in Texas. And not in a larger city either. I had to fly to Dallas and then on to LA.
Use expedia to arrange your flight next yr. They're cheaper than Priceline and the other clowns.
Go on the AX site and on their forums and talk and meet people. Create a thread asking about how to room with people.
I roomed with 5 guys but it only cost me a hundred and thirty bucks for 4 nights in a really nice hotel.
Next year room with some people. Save up money. Instead of going out and blowing money on fast food, movies, or w/ever it is you do, save up for the trip.
That's how I financed mine.
And believe me, you will NOT regret going.
There is so much to do and see you'll be overloaded.
Best decision I've made in a very long time......
