I'm basically missing this - Equivalent of 3-5 years of experience in delivering high quality editorial services related to book publication, graphic novels, and/or trade books
The rest I can learn.

Someone did. Seven Seas' Strawberry line didn't sell very well. |

Actually I think it would be nice if VIZ picks up Junjou Romantica and Sekaii Ichi Hatsukoi considering Tokyopop went under. Those are big titles in the BL market. |
What they should pick up is Mirage of Blaze if there's a manga version for it.

THAT I DO NOT BUY THEIR REASON FOR ONE SINGE BIT!!!
Otherwise they would not had dropped Bastard since it's definitely part of the mature content and a cult fav to the otaku community.

Wow. This came out of left field. I'm so excited to see what they'll be bringing to us. I'd love to be able to read Sakura Gari and The Cornered Mouse Dreams of Cheese + sequel in English.

jr: They gave Bastard more years than a lot of titles. It just wasn't to be. Though maybe if they could find a way to release it and cash in on Game of Thrones, it might find a new audience.
Anyway, I also hope this ties in with why Descendants of Darkness 12 hasn't been published yet.

Here's hoping Yuu Watase's Sakura-Gari, Zetsuai by Ozaki Minami and The Cornered Mouse Dreams of Cheese by Setona Mizushiro finally make it here! TTUTT |
Whatever the reason, I am giddy with excitement. Anything by Setona Mizushiro being licensed makes me overwhelmingly happy, so I hope you're right.

Viz's Japanese parent has a lot of BL titles that would never have seen publication in the US since Viz had the exclusive rights and never published BL here before (Descendants of Darkness was not BL, sorry). This is good news in that respect (been wanting that Setona Mizushiro title in English for years), but I have to worry how they are going to approach the genre. Tokyopop, when they created the Blu imprint, treated it the same as their main imprint, publishing too many series and too many copies, and had to scale back and raise price-points to make it viable. Viz will have to understand that the BL market is way, way smaller than the already small manga market, and that BL fans are some of the more rabid and entitled, as well as many of the older and more moneyed that the industry's consumer market has to offer.
My best guess is that Viz will ultimately hire any number of the people recently let go from Tokyopop to handle a new BL line, but that the licenses they acquire will be exclusive to the titles held by their parent and not to any potential Tokyopop rescues (I have a good feeling that DMP is already going after the creme of that crop), but we'll see.
I am concerned how they are going to treat the genre in terms of editing, though. There will probably be at least as much of it as was seen by Tokyopop and is currently seen by DMP, in order to put these books in stores (what's left of stores, anyway), as well as some licensing choices to the milder side of the genre. It's just a waiting game at this point, though, to see what comes of it.

There was a manga, but the title originated as a very popular series of novels in Japan. A very popular and very LONG series of novels and it is unlikely they will ever see the light of day considering the "good stuff" didn't happen in the novels for dozens of volumes.
I'd love to see Viz start licensing some BL anime, though. With Media Blasters having some trouble, CPM gone and TRSI only licensing stuff every once in a while, we need a new anime licensee of BL in English. Since Viz already has an anime division, it seems far more likely than hoping one of the surviving manga publishers of BL will give it a go.

Viz has some hentai in their past. (Check out TRSI's adult section. Still listed-Voyeurs, Inc; Hotel Harbor View; Heartbroken Angels; & Dance Till Tomorrow. I believe going back to the flipped days. I've noticed more heterosexual stuff in their catalog with a strong aversion to BL when one hopes Descendants of Darkness did well for them (Not that it's actually all that explicit or anything. Or even...do we ever get an outright love confession?)
On the other hand, BL does sell consistantly. I get so tired of starting a shojo I figure will be done in 5 volumes or less & then here we are at Blackbird 9 with no end in sight. It wouldn't be bad if the story didn't start feeling a bit stretched by that point. (I want to see the end, but stop with the delay tactics & just get it over with.)
At least BL tends to run 1 or 2 volumes. Not that I mind long, but shojo so often seems to settle for less? I start so many with high expectations the premise will go somewhere, but safe is the way they seem to play it too often. If that's the case, let's just zip right through it.
It would be nice to see some TP titles rescued. Saiyuki. Loveless. Wild Adapter. Junjyo. Kyo Kara Maoh. Silver Diamond was so interesting.
But I don't see Viz as a rescue company. Yen or DMP maybe, but I see Viz running from volume 1.

Someone did. Seven Seas' Strawberry line didn't sell very well. |
Seven Seas' Strawberry line was aborted prematurely and had odd liscensing choices.
Then again, Seven Seas has a tendancy to not follow through on their liscenses. Whenever I see their name on a manga, I think twice before buying since they tend to not complete their series or complete them by releasing them in more expensive, omnibus versions which contain material that you're forced to double-dip on. I prefer them completing series, but buying anything from them is a gamble.

Only Viz is to blame for the poor sales of that manga. Not advertising it hardly at all, then those horrible translations driving the fans away.
After all, who the hell says "Holy ham on rye with kraute", "holy hats", "Aint that darn tootin'", "hinky" and "blow me sideways!" in their dialogue in this day and age?
Viz sucks, I don't care what they do anymore. If they want to drive themselves into the ground more by trying to license BL stuff, then be my guest.
