I was wondering if Vampire Princess Miyu might count. Added bonus for her was if the thing being banished involved getting closer to a beautiful boy in the process.

Having seen just odds and ends of Yozakura Quartet, I'm kind-of glad to read the explanation of what was going on in that series.

The Medicine Seller is a great choice.

I think there ought to be a slot for Abe no Seimei, especially the one in Abenobashi Shoutengai, but not if it meant bumping Subaru from the list.

Death Note counts as a grotesque anime? Hardly anything happens on-screen.

As for anime exorcists, I'll mention Kekkaishi, one of my favorite classic shounen series. I loved seeing all the different ways that characters used barriers.

Oh good, someone else thought of this. Yeah, it looks pretty generic, but the execution was actually quite good.

I love Tokyo Babylon. I'm happy to see Subaru at the top and I think he deserves it. I also don't mind Kantarou being up there. Tokyo Babylon and then X happen to be my favorites from CLAMP, although CCS will always have a special place in my heart.

Based on the anime, Yukio Okumura is NOT an excellent exorcist. If I am ever in need of a blue exorcist, I trust hot-headed Rin more than his, prone to becoming an evil asshole, brother.
I'd say Rin's the one to trust more too.

I'm a little behind on the manga, but seriously I can say for sure Yukio is not among the most emotionally or mentally stable characters in the series. Rin's had his issues too, but he's dealing with them a LOT better, meanwhile Yukio has all those responsibilities that go with being a full fledged exorcist, a teacher, worrying about his brother, dealing with their dad's death, and everything piled on him and on top of that he's got something that keeps him from talking about some of that BS too. if anyone in that series cracks and loses it then it's gonna be Yukio.

I know very early on it seems like Yukio has it all together and is so mature, but he's 15 with all that BS to deal with and responsibilities, some of them he has to deal with on his own, so it's no wonder the kid is ready to crack. meanwhile Rin's dealing with his issues as best he can with the help of his friends and doesn't have the responsibility of being a full fledged exorcist while still a kid making things worse.

About 2/3 of the poll list I would not call "grotesque," even though they might have violence. Even at that, I added Shigurui Death Frenzy, which I wouldn't recommend as must-see, but is definitely grotesque if that's what you're after.

Grotesque has nothing to do with violence. I went and picked When they Cry not for the violent murders but for that one scene where Mion calmly orders her sister Shion to spoiler[tear off her own fingernails]. Not violent but... oh, it should hit the viewer of so many levels. And the scene where the girl holds a knife on the wall and then... Let's face it, the whole thing starts with a contorted face screaming "Liar!".

Such sweet memories! I also picked From the New World more so for its explorations of the psychologically grotesque than its physical examples though there's no shortage of those. This show makes you feel dirty about humanity as a whole in ways no other series would want to.

And for a more typical pick of what you're thinking of... the kind of sick things you can only get in unrated movies and OVAs... I opted for Wicked City mostly because Legend of the Overfiend is too close to porn. I consider both works to be examples of the kind of body horror you find from prime Clive Barker, a combination of sex by death and death through sex. I give the edge to Overfiend for the scene where a minor human villain has to cut off his own penis and replace with a demon one... power through emasculation, what a concept...

Sure, Wicked City has the spider woman with a toothy vagina but I do find it a lot more powerful/memorable when the victim has to be an active enabler in their unfortunate circumstance than a passive victim.
