Funny how Adult Swim is basically what Sushi TV would have amounted to... |
Does it really matter what she is? She's still pretty damn easy on the eyes.
I don't see what could've been a bad idea about Sushi TV except for the "good" parts getting cut out of the OVAs. (Of course, had it actually aired, and they aired Armitage, Cyber City, the Guyver OVA, or MD Geist, it wouldn't be any gain to me because I've already bought the DVDs or downloaded them due to their OOP status.) Hell, I bet in my nubcake days (mid-to-late '90s), I'd have snuck peeks at Sushi TV late at night while my parents were asleep to get as close a glimpse of uncut anime as possible, then later on nag my parents to buy me the VHS tapes available at the time.
@ zhir: I haven't seen any of the Patlabor films, Lodoss, or Area 88, so I can't say anything about those, but you forgot Utena, Cyber City Oedo 808, MD Geist (Yes, I actually liked it), and Now and Then, Here and There.

Ah, A-Ko, gotta love it. I just finished watching Genocyber, and now I'm into an 80's kick, so this is appropriate. Just ordered M.D. Geist and some other oldies, in fact, before noticing this.
I liked Genocyber a lot, and I have a funny feeling I'm going to like Geist as well. Go figure... no accounting for taste. And hey, I liked Harmageddon, too. Actually, I think it's from being overdosed on moe and knock-offs of remakes in the last two years. I'm ready for some original manly anime
Still, what I have to wonder now is, how bad was the stuff us newbies will never see because it hit VHS and died 15 years ago? Oh, and Sushi TV. It was just ahead of its time. Sign me up!

Most of the old stuff being out-of-print, well...you can probably look it up on MemeTube and watch it without legal repercussions since no one's profiting anymore.
M.D. Geist is hilariously bad, and the dub...well, for the first movie, they sorta tried, but the second movie's dub is flatter than 3-month-old pop. I wish I was kidding.

Thanks, I'll check that out. As far as Geist, when I say I'll probably like it, that doesn't mean I'll necessarily think it's "good"

I actually have one of those Sushi TV promo tapes. It was sent to a comic book store a friend of mine used to work for. It never fails to bring a laugh.

Justin, you not only picked my favorite film, but also my favorite scene from it.
All I can say is, if/when you start your own publishing company I'll buy 100 copies of your very super special edition of Patlabor 2 to put in everyone's stocking for Christmas!

They did the Area 88 OVAs and the Patlabor series. |
Also Now & Then Here & There, The World of Narue, Shadow Star Narutaru, Slayers, Night on the Galactic Railroad, Grave of the Fireflies, Project A-Ko, They Were 11, Wind Named Amnesia...and Maze was all right for a laugh.

Great article Justin. However, after reading through everything, I'd think I'd be safest with your last choice, the bottle of hooch. that and maybe "A Christmas Story" shown all day long on one of those cable channels on Christmas Day.

I loved the announcer for the Supernova/Project A-Ko pitch. It's like he was trying to be serious at the end, and figured out somewhere towards the middle that it wasn't possible. So he said, "Ah, to h*** with it! I'll just make something up!"

Even so, CPM/USM has a much lower hit-to-crap ratio than other studios.
Plus, the awkward Geist CG that opens EVERY DVD. I mean they deserve some flack for THAT.

I'm not sure if I believe that CPM had a much lower hit-to-crap ratio than other studios. I remember a while back where AnimeOnDVD was doing their yearly roundups, and I saw that even though ADV had released 200+ discs that year, I only cared to buy about three. Much of my collection is CPM stuff, as many of their titles were either outstandingly good and therefore worth owning/watching or outstandingly bad...and therefore worth owning/watching. Which is why I would like the record to show that I would GLADLY welcome more Dog Soldier discussion.
My favorite part of the Gaga reel (which will be mentioned AGAIN in the next podcast episode that still isn't posted) has always been when they referred to MD Geist the Thunder Warrior as "high CONCEPT" while masterfully editing around the fact that anyone is violently killed.
I must confess to also having kept both the Manga Video and Bandai Visual DVD releases of the first two Patlabor movies, but it's not actually because of my love for the original dub. Granted, I prefer the original dubs to the redone ones, but my reason is that I still want the original Japanese tracks. The BV DVDs only have the remastered 5.1 audio tracks which were made by having the entire movie rerecorded, altering a few lines and redoing all of the music. The end result is fine, but I prefer the original version of "Break" (the end credits instrumental at the end of the first movie) to the new version. If I had any real idea of what I was doing, I'd use something like DVD Lab Pro to author discs using the Bandai Visual disc's video that had the 5.1 Japanese and the original 2.0 mix. And while I was at it, I'd make a Wings of Honneamise DVD using the BV video and the Manga DVD commentary track/extras.

In that case, you may want to come on down to Crunchyroll and download some Fist of the North Star episodes! You can also buy the movie version released on Image's DVD release, if you are so inclined (that one's dub-only, though).
Also, Detonator Orgun and Shamanic Princess are some decent picks form Central Park Media.

Seriously, the guy is SO BAD. The only thing that would have made this better would be if BILLY MAYS had been the announcer.

Ahh... the hentai trailer discs. I received one of those last year at NYAF 07 but I'm not sure if it was "Always On The Edge 1.1"
It was personally handed to me by John O'Donnell himself so that makes it extra special.
