The dialogue was apparently lifted directly from a porn, so you're not all that far off.

Actually they all sound like the same voice actress to me (Stephanie Sheh?), just changing her voice/tone up a bit.

I think I was able to pick out some of the VAs' voice. One of the voices I definitely heard Jennifer Sekiguchi, other is Julie Ann Taylor, I think the other is Michelle Ruff, and I think I heard Carrie Savage.

Didn't sound like much of a competition to me Rolling Eyes

God I hope VA number 2 wins, I didn't really think Mikuru's voice could even theoreticaly translate to English, but she actually did a pretty good job!

Though I do wonder whether they'll translate the lyrics- I mean, with a good singer they could potentially just sing the Japanese lyrics, rather than attempt to struggle to adapt the lyrics to perfectly match the rhythms of the song. Though granted, it can be done, but I'd hope that if they do translate it, they do so well.

Song translation is always hard...but it just wouldn't make sense to switch to Japanese in the middle of the episode. Media Blasters and Funimation were able to really great song translation jobs on Rurouni Kenshin and Kiddy Grade; it even took me a second to register that the singing was in English.
One overlooked instance of song dubbing is Key the Metal Idol--I liked Viz's English versions of the songs in that one.

It's generally standard practice to leave insert songs in Japanese; I'd say I've seen more instances of suddenly switching to Japanese during an English dub track than I have of dubbed insert songs. Some examples:

The marching mecha song in episode 11 of Nadesico
The characters singing the OP in episode 18 of Love Hina
Any of the numerous songs that play in Marmalade Boy, not subtitled either Evil or Very Mad)
Any of the songs in Full Moon, which Viz doesn't have a secondary subtitle track for, so if you're watching it in English you're suddenly listening to songs you (probably) can't understand.

Granted, ADV dubbed all the singing for Nerima Daikon Brothers, but since that series is a musical, they kind of had to--since it's only a couple of songs in one episode of Melancholy~, my bet is that they'll leave it in Japanese. At least Bandai has mastered the difficult art of secondary subtitle tracks (even Love Hina had one), so we at least shouldn't have to worry about watching the English dub for episode 12 and then suddenly hearing unsubtitled Japanese.

....Geez, it DOES sound like hentai. O.o;;;

I'm not sure which one to vote for...it's a little harder to do since I haven't seen the anime before, so I can only kinda guess at what's going on. Anime hyper I'm really impressed at how Bandai's really trying to do what the fans want with this one, though.

EDIT: Oh, okay, I think I know what's going on...it's Haruhi's thing where she likes to...make Miroku try on different....dresses or something?

I'm kinda stumped...I think the voice that #2 did suits her more, but I like the acting slightly better on #3....

Oh good, sounds like I'm probably not the only one who cracked upon listening to those English takes because especially out of context it sounded like something out of a hentai... Anime hyper

Haruhi's making Mikuru wear the bunnygirl outfit, forcing her to get into it, if I'm recalling the scene correctly.

Drakh from CrystalAcids, who I trust as being reliable at spotting voices, says it's Michelle Ruff, Stephanie Sheh, Dorothy Fahn and Sherry Lynn up for vote.

Too bad I can't actually hear them right now since the computer I'm on has no sound. Confused I'll have to wait until tomorrow (though they may have a new vote up by then)

I still think it's neat that they're doing this. Not the first time there's been a vote with a choice of VA's, but it's always interesting to me.

I agree. Esper is used in Japanese to use pretty much the same thing as "psychic" is in English- a person with supernatural abilities of the mind, such as telepathy, telekinesis, or any number of other things...

Funny how back in the FFVI days people were complaining of the use of the term "Esper" (as opposed to Phantom Beast), and now people are complaining that the term used might not be "Esper".

It's a slightly different situation with FFVI. In FFVI, the "espers" were called 幻獣, which literally does mean "Phantom Beast." They are more like mystical creatures than humans imbued with paranormal powers, and hence I can see why some people would complain. In the case of Haruhi, the original term, 超能力者 can be translated as either esper or psychic, but the main point of the term is that it's something who possesses supernatural/abnormal powers. Now, calling him a "psychic" isn't that bad. However, to me, the connotation of "psychic" nowadays is a bit more passive, as in mostly focused on sensing and perception rather than actions, while the 超能力者 in Haruhi tend to be focused more on using their powers to actively manipulate things.

I would say most definitely other way around - Extra Sensory Perception definitely sounds like it's focused on sensing and perception to me.

I have heard this:

1 is Michelle Ruff (Rukia in Bleach, Chii in Chobits)
2 is Stephanie Sheh (Hinata in Naruto, Orihime in Bleach, Eureka in Eureka7)
3 is Dorothy Fahn (Meryl in Trigun)
4 is Sherry Lynn (Sasami in Tenchi Muyo!)

Personally, I like Stephanie and Sherry the best.
I concur with the person who said it sounded like hentai auditions.

Yeah, really. "psychic" is the catch-all term for mental abilities in general, including stuff like actively manipulating things through telekinesis and so on. Clairvoyant would imply something more passive, perhaps, but psychic is a nice, broad word that covers the same ground in English as "esper" does in Haruhi.

In the end, I voted for Michelle Ruff - Sheh's voice sounds roughly right for Mikuru, but given that she'll probably be voicing Mikuru's adult self, and considering that Mikuru is a high school senior, her voice adds just a flaire of maturity lacking in the other three.

Ahh, 'tis a pity she's only in second place, though.

Hm now I dunno. I always thought part of Mikuru's character was how she acted so childish despite being apparently older than the others?

I won't vote for Stephanie Sheh on the principal that I chose her as who I wanted to play Yuki when I made up potential cast lists for the AoD forums some time back.

I'd prefer Ellen Wilkinson (Melfina in Outlaw Star) as Mikuru - too bad she wasn't a choice, so I voted for Sherry Lynn (who isn't getting many votes, it seems). Mikuru needs as childish a voice as possible, and Sherry Lynn has it.

Perhaps they should just go the Dungeons and Dragons route and call them Psions/Psionicists.
