Here's an interesting article on the subject.

Assuming its an accurate portrayal of things, it seems changes to what women do in their entertainment careers (note: changes IN those careers, not LEAVING those careers) is a pretty normal thing across the board in Japanese entertainment industries. It's not just an anime "LOL creepy Japanese otaku and their waifus" thing.
