I think people over blow the age gap in RKB. He is in 10th grade, technically high school , and they are in 6th grade, which in Japan is still considered elementary school. But in reality its a 4 year gap. I am not saying it would necessarily be okay, but its like he is 16 and they 12.

The chick who does Ichigo 100% did a manga where the kid was around 12/13 and the girl at least 16. Not to mention in Lotte no Omocha outside of other things, Nao was 12/13 and Mercedes 18 when they had their kid. Neither of these works received too much flack.

The point being though, this is not Kodomo no Jikan, where he is in his mid twenties and she is maybe 10 at the oldest.

Sentai's subs aren't hard encoded on the video files. I found this out the fun way trying to make back up files of Shigofumi. Wink

Theres no loli nipples, as far as I know. Most fanservice you'll see is some bath scenes with steam... and theres other stuff released with actual loli nudity like Strike Witches. So I dunno.

It has a lot to do with the setting though. In strike witches, the loli's don't have romantic interest in older boys.

It can't be reverse-importation, as Sentai was only doing a Sub-only DVD release.

Why not? It will be in Japanese, so the Japanese might import it much cheaper than they could buy it n Japan, if they have an R1 player. The fact that it was DVD only and not BluRay argues against reverse-importation being the reason, but not sub-only.

That's a different situation, as Papillon Rose didn't have a Blu-Ray release in Japan. That would've been cheap R1 DVDs competing against expensive R2J DVDs, which... were probably out of production by that point anyway.

Isn’t that basically the same thing in the end? It’s a fear that people will forgo an expensive domestic release in favor of a cheaper and inferior R1 import. By that logic even an R1 DVD is a threat to a domestic Blu-ray if they’re concerned about people downgrading. Granted I don’t think such fears are realistic, especially if otaku are so concerned with quality, but they might be from the point of view of the R2 companies.

I don't care about this series since I have no interest in watching it, but it's still damn weird for them to sell it and then change their mind and renege on the deal. It doesn't reflect good business practices.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but when has a Japanese license holder ever given a crap about perceptions outside their native market?

A bit actually...

Jungle Emperor Leo manga: Tezuka Pro is concerned about the images of Jews and Africans in that manga. Refuse to license it in English

St. Young Men manga: after being banned in Thailand and The Philippines the author refuses to relinquish an English language version.

I'm pretty sure there is some drama involving the Rose of Versailles mangaka not wanting that series in English as well.

I don't really know too much about Leo, but was it teeming with racist caricatures or something?

More just me wondering is all.

Not sure on Leo (not licensed so I haven't seen it) but some of Tezuka's other works- Astro Boy and a couple stories in Black Jack IIRC- contain pretty much what could be considered racial (and probably racist today) stereotypes.

I can't recall how Vertical mentioned them off hand in Black Jack but Dark Horse had a disclaimer in the front of some (...all? I haven't looked at them in a while) of the Astro Boy books trying to put the caricatures into a form of context for the time. Given where Leo takes place I wouldn't be shocked if there weren't a whole lot more opportunity for some of these caricatures to appear- well African anyway. Not sure exactly how one can get a whole bunch of Jewish ones in there.

I'd say it's image. Only in the past decade have we gotten past the stereotype that all anime fans watch violent tentacle porn. We don't need a pedo stain on top of that!

This is also why I dropped both Strawberry Marshmallow and Dance in the Vampire Bund (FUNimation should NEVER have gotten that show! Seriously, a half-naked loli vampire? What the hell, FUNi? Are you TRYING to taint an entire subset of geek culture?). The last thing I need to happen if I bring an outsider into the fandom is to be looked at as if I'm Jerry Sandusky! Anime and manga are not Penn State! [EDIT: Save the religious generalizations for a relevant site. ~Zalis]

I dunno about you, but TvTropes was seriously getting their panties into a twist about Lotte. I think they chose to ban it from the site eventually.

You don't need a native player to play discs from another region. A tech savvy person can easily circumvent region locking.
