As for Shadow Star, not even a hardcore horror/suspense friend of mine would watch or read this series. He said it was way too violent, even after watching When They Cry and Claymore

There is no way Shadow Star is more violent than When They Cry o.o It's maybe not far apart, but to me Higurashi was clearly the more disgusting one. In fact I am really sensitive when it comes to Horror (but Narutaru isn't really horror to me anyway) and I hate splatter - still I love Narutaru. It can be really violent and dark, but the story is just too good and intriguing.

But for everybody who thinks Narutaru / Shadow Star is too violent, you should really try Bokurano. It's just as good or even better and not the same graphic violence.

When They Cry May may be pretty violent... ok, no may about it, it is. But from what I understand, the content that Shadow Star Narutaru has is beyond normal violence. It's not the amount of blood splatter or gore or whatever that disturbs people. It's the nature of the acts that occur that disturb people.

From some of the things I've heard about Narutaru, well... simple descriptions of some of the scenes would probably be enough to disturb many people and make them uncomfortable. The fact that these scenes are depicted in a fair amount of detail just makes it worse.

Still, I've heard a lot of good things about the manga from some of those who have read it, so I can't sat I haven't been interested in it at least a little bit.

Why must everyone insist that Tsughmi Ohba
and Takeshi Obata are sexist pigs?
I mean yes, the female characters in
Death Note and Bakuman are pretty shallow
and in Hikaru No Go they're almost non-existent
(of course Ohba wasn't working on Hikaru No Go.
It was Takeshi Obata and Yumi Hotta, I think.)

Anyways, what I am saying is that couldn't it
be possible that Ohba (I think it's more Ohba
than Obata that's the problem) just isn't very
good at making a good female character?
It's not easy for a guy to make interesting female
characters because most of us don't know anything
about girls (even if we think we do.) If you think I'm
wrong about that then why do you think girls in
shonen manga always seem either very perky
and cute or very tomboyish (and cute.)?

And of course any idiot should be able to tell
that the girls in a Ohba manga are only there
to sell the story. I mean really, Amane Misa and
Kiyomi Takada from Death Note. Their only purpose
was to drive the story forward.

Maybe Ohba is a sexist pig but I don't think we
should rule out the possibility that he just
isn't very good at making female characters
(or possibly a mix of the two?)

There are some good female characters in Shonen-manga
(not many though.) but in my own humble opinion
I think One Piece does a good job with female characters.
Now you may say "Bah. One Piece makes all the girls
proportional impossible and too thin."
But then you probably don't read much One Piece
because you should then know that One Piece
exaggerates ALL of it's characters.
It is true that many One Piece females are cute
(or are at least supposed to be.) but at the
same time they got a ton of personality.
Nami is a vital part of the straw hat crew as much
as any other member and not just as a romantic
love interest that will never be for Sanji
(Sanji: Say it ain't so, Crap-head.)
Even Nico Robin has her own unique laughter
(actually just about every character does but still.)
and she also has one of the unique and awesome abilities
(It's like the evolved form of "stop hitting yourself").

Last but not least

Nami from One Piece > Rinslet Walker from Black Cat.

You know it's true.

Nah, it's like Doctor Manhattan satisfying (not) Silk Spectre II. Laughing

I'm not saying that he is, actually in Death Note imho all the characters were pretty shallow, not only the female ones ^^;

But now in Bakuman it's not only about the female characters and their importance, "deepness" etc., but statements like the one I mentioned before: "too intelligent women are unattractive and so in fact they are stupid, because they aim too high and then nobody wants them. The really intelligent ones are those, who just stay cute and attractive in order to appeal to men and aim for marriage."

The weak female characters per se combined with such statements, really make you think: "what is he thinking? is he sexist or what?".

I also think One Piece has pretty good female characters, so has Claymore (of course) or Soul Eater (Maka is even the main character in an equal pair with Soul). And on the other hand, I can hardly think of other female characters in Shonen who are really as bad as Ohba's oO;;

So maybe that's the case, but then that just makes him a "not very good" author. Personally I actually think that he just isn't very good at making any kind of character. ^^;;

Mad Scientist: I think the same can be said about Higurashi. At least, too me, Higurashi was worse. But well, you'll just have to try yourself Wink

I've seen all of Higurashi + Kai, and I've seen the Narutaru anime (and will hopefully soon be reading the manga for both)

As has been mentioned, Higurashi is certainly more gory and bloody, that it not to be debated. However, I think what can be debated is which is more disturbing, in which case I would say Narutaru wins.

Narutaru spoiler spoiler[Like watching an elementary student get violated with a test tube and then seeing a monster kill another student by injecting loads of worms into her mouth until she pukes over and over again, finally impaling her private parts (creating an extremely amount of pleasure/pain) causing her gruesome death.]

I've been told that the Narutaru anime was vastly less disturbing than its manga counterpart, but those two scenes were just hell to go through.

Embarassed I'm sorry for bumping up a thread that hasn't been posted in for a couple of days but the whole Ooba and Obata being sexist thing got my attention. Because I was wondering, has it even been confirmed that Ooba is male? It's been a while and I haven't read Bakuman but I remember during Death Note people had reasons for believing s/he was female. Not that I'm saying women can't be sexist against other women (women can be even worse than men sometimes) but it's still something to think about.

Also I always liked Peacemaker, I think the art is great and sometimes the story drags but I thought it was good...
