It's a show about two women (based on female wrestlers) who work as bounty hunters and blow up anything that gets in their way. How does it sound like a manifestation of Japanese Imagination Handicap? Also, I'd point out that just because we can imagine a world where everybody is equal and we all sing kumbiya and dance into the sunset doesn't mean it's likely to happen. This in no way excuses lazy or misogynist writing, of course, but I'd like to read more SF that deals with how frictions between genders and ethnicities will be affected by scientific and technological advances, beyond simply assuming they'll disappear. (Except for the sub-genre of super feminist SF where women fleeing the patriarchy establish their own planet where they all become lesbians and clone new babies - all girls, of course. Important, maybe, but not really my cup of tea.) And remember, the second season of GitS:SAC had empowered women and all that jazz, bu it also had (for me) disturbingly ethno-centric nationalism, too. |

Make sense, but still DP wasn't availible for import during the late 80s and early 90s. Though in 1989 you could mail order bootlegged import VHS masters in scfi magazines but this was only limited to certain parts of the country. BTW, is your husband older than you or is he the same age? Just asking since most of those "Anime Clubs" came into existance in the 80s. |

Back In 1994. [Mod Edit: Switched image tag to a URL tag as the image was too large for the forums on some peoples monitors causing the pages to stretch over the screen edges on the side. - Keonyn] |

Nice collection this week, but the organization would drive me crazy. >.< I wouldn't be able to group things together by series like that. But we have a lot of similar interests. Maybe I should send a few pictures of my collection sometime. (I just have to expand my shelves! I'm out of display room. :p)

I can't speak for how they obtained them, but a quick eBay search turned up several copies of various volumes in the series for around $1 to $2 each. Looks like getting a complete set would be both pretty easy and cheap, even now. |

Yeah, I think Vash was projecting a bit with the Japanese Imagination Handicap there. This seems to pop up a lot on animenewsnetwork, but the truth is, anime and manga is far broader and more varied politically and socially than some people give it credit for. And for questionable female empowerment, American comics and animation are still stunningly waaaay behind on that front. (In the case of Marvel and DC today, they've also done a fine job going BACKWARDS when it comes to respectable treatment of women!) As for GITS 2nd Gig, I don't know if the show was promoting ethno-centric nationalism per se, but it was obviously a key topic in the show. It's hard to say. Oshii apparently had a hand in it and his stuff is always a little bit on the bubble as to whether his themes promote nationalism or not. But usually they're nuanced enough in that they're ambiguous. I'd like to point out, though, that the Major and her crew are fairly ambivalent about most political movements in general, and simply do the job just because they're paid to, so the audience isn't really asked to sway either way. Even though the Prime Minister is presented in the show as a woman being one of the "good guys", even the Major and the Chief briefly discuss the downsides of the politics of a conservative-leaning government such as Prime Minister Kayabuki's. But their job is to minimize terrorism and protect the Prime Minister, not to promote her politics. The show does acknowledge this. |

I've never been interested in Dirty Pair. I think the vaguely pornographic name has something to do with it. Also with the fact that it looks completely retarded.
Golgo 13: is this actually good, or is it good in a Daryl Surat "so terrible it's fun" kind of way? |

Never ask a lady's age! But seriously he's like two years older than me, and would've attended what he called "AWOL" sometime between 1989 and 1994. You can read more about his beardo anime clubs here and here. Noah is caught on tape in this video, although he was like 12-14 and the video predates his beard. |

Very heavily edited? Uh oh, I don't like the sound of that. And since Jetstream is dead, that's a foul if I ever heard one. |

Ah-she likes the Dirty Pair-my kind of person! As I've mentioned elsewhere I'm a big DP fan-no-I don't have a beard (yeech!) and I'm not an old fart either. Yes-it was made in the 80's and damn proud of it-for me Kei is my favorite, red hair and short temper and all.

My apologies, I wasn't implying your age, I was just wondering his age since he was probably a young teen around the time "anime clubs" became quite popluar underground. Did you know that A-kon is like the oldest known American anime con? Its been around since '88. |

I've been a collector for nearly 3 decades.
Here is a Viz pamphlet from 1995, you can order the comics through this. I bought mine when they when they first came out. There were only three out at the time. Anime America 95 is a con i got a ton of stuff at. Here is a autograph when I met monkey punch. Dirty Pair were in the news back in 95 when fansubbers were doing their thing then. You could buy fansubs of Dirty Pair at the con I got this from. Bootleg wall scroll's, all sorts of stuff. Article about J.A.I.L.E.D. Article 1 , article 2 , article 3 . The stuff we talk about today has been talked about for years before computers were in every home, and Still no one does anything. |

Dirty Pair is essentially a buddy action show. The name of the show is merely a tongue in cheek joke for the pair. As for Golgo 13, one's definition of "terrible" varies. For some it's good, for some it's not. Honestly, in anime fandom, there is no such thing as "good" and "bad". Even the least acclaimed anime have their supporters. |
