Well, everything that I've ordered has posted to my card, and I have no plans of buying anything else anime related for the remainder of the year, so I might as well bang this all out. Since I'm going to be breaking everything down for the whole year, I'm not going to do a separate post just for December, but I spent $1,105.24 this month. Yup, Merry Christmas to me. Anyways, the yearly total this year came down to:

Anime - $3684.60

Unlike TKoH, I won't be counting combo packs differently, they'll be considered BDs. Mainly because I didn't specify if things were combo packs in my list, so it would be a major pain to go back and figure that out now.

DVDs - $1001.82 made up of 42 units
BDs - $2682.78 made up of 59 units

Basically I'm buying BDs whenever I can, but there still was a lot of stuff I wanted where I didn't have the option of BD. I'd like it if DVD were abandoned, but I'm not going to pitch a fit over having to buy DVDs if the option isn't there either. I just don't like it when I buy a DVD set only to have a BD set come out not too long after. Yeah, I'm looking at you Heaven's Lost Property: Forte.

Manga - $1285.71 made up of 174 units

Part of me thinks that number seems a bit low, but barring me having done an error when adding them up just now, it should be accurate. We'll see when I add up all categories I guess. (And it turns out I was right, but I was only off by $12.04. Since VIZ manga is on sale for 6.02 each typically during the TRSI sales, I'm assuming my error was I missed two manga here, so I've added them to this total.)

Figures - $2648.86 made up of 27 units

This is a large decrease from last year, and I'm hoping to slash this amount at least in half next year. Not because it's too expensive, but because I'm rapidly running out of room to display them all.

Miscellaneous - $1504.07

Of this, a full third of it ($550) is tax deductible. Yup, I've figured out a way to write off my anime hobby! Alright, so it was a couple items I bought at a charity auction. Sure would be nice if I could figure out a way to get DVDs and BDs as a tax write off though!

2013 Grand Total - $9123.24

This is actually a considerable drop from last year. I spent $3259.73 less this year than last year, a large part of that is I bought less figures. A lot less figures, actually. Last year I bought 89 figures, although my figures this year were more expensive on average ($98.11 per vs $74.19 per in 2012). Still, I'd rather go more to a quality over quantity model now anyways. With me buying almost exclusively from GSC and it's affiliates or Alter, the price per unit was bound to go up.

So, we can look at my differences from last year.

Anime +$869.65 (101 sets this year vs 78 sets last year)

Manga -$696.80 (174 manga this year vs 223 last year)

Figures -$3954.12 (as stated earlier 27 figures this year vs 89 last year)

Miscellaneous -$521.54 (since it's not really comparing apples to apples here, comparing the amount in this category isn't really practical)

All in all the only goal I had in mind was to spend a bit less than last year. Deep down I was hoping to be under $10,000 which I managed to do, although TRSI did their best to try and put me over it with their sale this year. While setting goals isn't really my nature, and I tend to feel that if I want something, I'm going to buy it, I hope that next year I can trim this down to less than $7000. Might not happen, but one can always hope!

And here we go with my final monthly expense report for 2013. Razz

Pilot Candidate Single Volumes = $35.71
Reign the Conqueror Box Set = $18.20
Tale of Genji Subbed VHS = $36.67 (free shipping)
Gundam SEED Destiny Volume 6 = $7.49
Inu x Boku, Maria-Holic and Natsuyuki Rendezvous DVD sets = $57.97 (free shipping)
Brighter than the Dawning Blue, My Bride is a Mermaid and Place to Place DVD sets = $52.47 (free shipping)

December Total = $208.51

Final 2013 Total = $3388.35

Just for the sake of comparison, let us see how much more I spent compared to last year.

2013 Total (3388.35) - 2012 Total (1883.05) = +$1505.30 Shocked

Suppose full-time employment got the better of me to splurge more compared to last year. I am planning to buckle down on anime splurging for next year, so we shall see what I'll whip up for a spending total for 2014. Laughing

Finally I have got around to work out Oct, Nov & Dec's expenses. I wont bore you all with monthly break downs but for the 3 months they are categorised into:

Manga: £403.85
Anime: £404.20
Other: £26.97 (3 months of Crunchyroll)

That brings me to a total of £835.02 for the last 3 months and £5705.99 (around $9,330.90) for the year*. I don't see next year having such a large grand total.

*any pre-orders etc. that go through before the end of the year will be counted in January's totals.

I don't think I'm going to have a chance to hit the sales before the New Year, so here we go. I didn't post October and November's at the time either so here we are.

October

Anime: £9.99
Manga: £91.11
Manhwa: £0.30 (the joys of Amazon vouchers)
Other: £16 (2 mini figures)
Total: £117.50

November

Anime: None
Manga: £124.33
Other: £58.83 (Next year's and upgrading Crunchyroll subscription so I can get the manga)
Total: £183.16

December

Anime: £0 (Used an Amazon voucher to buy Bakemonogatari part 2
Manga: £105.73
Other: £3.19 (1 mini figure)
Total: £105.73

And so... my year end total is: £2110.74 Damn. I was hoping to stay under £2k. However it is a bit of an improvement on last year's total, which was £2304.90.

Breakdown (because this is my inner stats nerd crying to get out.)

My most expensive month was March, where I spent £279.27. My most frugal month was December where I spent a mere £105.73.

Average monthly spend is £175.90 (rounded)

I bought 26 anime sets and spent £296.59 there. The most expensive item was a complete set of the original FMA anime and Conqueror of Shamballa movie at £41. September was the month I spent the most on anime, due to going to a con and being able to buy lots of things direct from Manga UK for £10 per 1 cour season and the Princess Jellyfish LE for £25 which is cheaper than I've ever seen it online. However, this was considerably less than last year's anime spend, which was £373.63.

18 manhwa volumes set me back £78.20. Again, less than last year where I spent £123.78.

Miscellaneous expenses came to £94.56. This was a couple of magazines, renewing my ANN subscription and 2 Kickstarters (Time of Eve and The Crater) June was the only month I spent anything on Kickstarters (I add them to the budget based on the month my card is charged) Slightly less than last year's £102.96

£31.96 went to novels and these were Spice and Wolf volumes 7-9 and The Indignation of Haruhi Suzumiya. Considerably less than last year's £86.91, because I caught up with both S&W and Haruhi.

I spent £46.18 on figures. These were mostly various Madoka Magica Petit Nendoroids but some others as well. Last year I only spent £20. Hopefully this isn't a downward spiral...

£9.43 went on a solitary art book. Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle. Much less than last year's £68.05, but I have most of the English artbooks I want, and importing JP ones isn't a particularly high priority.

Crunchyroll was surprisingly expensive this year due to upgrading when they brought the manga out. Including renewing this year's subscription when it was due in the summer, buying next year's in the Black Friday sale, and upgrading this year's, it cost me £98.82. Hopefully this'll be cheaper next year. Last year it was £39.99 for the yearly renewal.

I didn't buy any live action stuff this year. I spent £17 on it last year.

Leaving... £1455.00 for manga! Which is slightly less overall than last year where I spent £1541.16. However this comes to only 186 volumes, compared to last year's 260. (I count omnibuses as 1 volume regardless of how many books there were originally) I did a lot of OOP hunting this year, so I think that's why I got so few books comparatively. It also pushed this year's average price per volume up to £7.82 as opposed to last year's £5.92. Fortunately I've largely scratched the OOP itch for now, so hopefully I will spend less next year.

As I've noted elsewhere in the other threads related to buying, the stuff that I added to my collection/already paid for this year (anime/manga/cds/artbooks/mementos/figures/calendars/whatever else) all came from:

Amazon: JP, UK, & USA
TRSI
AmiAmi
Kickstarter
Siren Visual
Various Amzn Resellers
Anime Sols
RACS (1 order)

I'm still in the process of sorting things out but for now here's what I spent at Amzn JP. I placed 93 orders, my most ever in a single year.

These included: 58 cds/titles (Maxi singles, OSTs, and or box set) After all this time I finally got a Cowboy Bebop CD box.

42 blu-ray titles (movie/oav, single, and or complete box),

32 Dvds (singles, artbox set, and or a complete set in a plastic case),

a single VHS Tape (Bobby's in Deep - if there ever was a dvd for it I couldn't find one),

and a few artbooks/some volumes of raw manga (I didn't want to, just couldn't wait for more of stateside Vinland Saga).

Approximate Amzn JP 2013 Total: $9,521.12 USD, which doesn't account for any pre-order price difference refunds, foreign transaction fees and or anything to do with currency exchange rates.

For 2014 I'll be attempting to limit myself to only buying what I've already started collecting (Arise, The Eccentric Family) and or one order per month?!?!? So anything brand spanky will have to be incredibly exceptional and or simply impossible for me to play the waiting game with.

Sigh.........2013 was an expensive year for me.

JAN = AUS$365.41
FEB = AUS$104.96
MAR = AUS$87.98
APR = AUS$868.21
MAY = AUS$261.53
JUN = AUS$1,166.84
JUL = AUS$837.27
AUG = AUS$888.84
SEPT = AUS$881.78
OCT = AUS$694.14
NOV = AUS$158.45
DEC = AUS$2,784.99

TOTAL = AUS$9,100.40

About 95% of the total amount was spent on DVD's and Blurays.

If you are wondering why December is so high, that is because one of my orders on rightstuf went over the 120 Day rule and it shipped all in stock items.

I think I am going to try and get this under $4,500 for 2014.

Time to wrap up the old year:

Anime: $29.99
Manga: $18.33
Figures: $71.12
Subscriptions: $49.99

December Total: $169.43
2013 Total: $2,660.30

Difference from 2012: -$553.13

So I saved a little over 17%, mostly by going cold turkey on figures(possibly helped by lack of display space). If I didn't have other reasons pushing me deeper in debt, my finances would probably be quite sound by now.

My outstanding TRSI order did not get processed in December, so I can post my monthly total as well as my YTD spending.

December Grand Total: $532.17

anime: $321.70 (8.5 TV, 1 OVA, 3 movies)
figure(s): $87.12 (2)
subscription: $53 (Crunchyroll)
shipping: $32.45
sales tax: $35.60

For Canadians who are interested in this sort of thing, I lost $20.11 in currency difference on my TRSI order.

So this is my spending for the year:

YTD Grand Total: $3,914.57 (under 4k, yeah!)

Anime: $2,535.41 (57.5 TV, 35 Ovas, 19 movies) - ($1,866.48 of this amount went to private sellers)

Manga: $45 (10)

Figures: $739.62 (10)

Wallscroll(s): $35 (2)

Subscription(s): $74.18 (2)

Movie ticket(s): $40 (4)

Convention ticket(s): $107.49(2)

Shipping: $203.20

Handling: $49.80

Sales Tax: $195.17

Curr. Diff: $39.21

These totals compare very favourably with last two years:

2011 Grand Total: $11,636.57

2012 Grand Total: $8,747.29

For 2014, I'd love to come in at $2,500. That is an appropriate yearly total for me. Actually, it's kind of insane that I continue to buy any more anime at all given my backlog, but...

A little late but lets post 2013 totals.

Anime Purchases: $581.15
Manga Purchases: $494.82
Music Purchases: $12.57
Misc. : $18.04
Total for 2013: $1106.58

Looking at the last 3 years I've managed to rein in my purchases ( I don't even want to think about 2010).
Total for all purchases in 2011: $2283.80
Total for all purchases in 2012: $1783.40
Total for all purchases in 2013: $1106.58

I was aiming for under $1500 this year and managed to do it (yay!). For 2014 I want to keep my anime and manga habit down to a healthy even $1K. At least that's my new goal for the year.

I finally got around to figuring my expenses for the year. I haven’t been keeping this up for the last few months so I redid the whole of 2013.

Manga: 7 volumes from RACS and 219 from the local comic shop. Total 226 volumes for a cost of $2055.13

Bluray sets: 12 sets from TRSI and 35 from RACS. Total 47 sets for a cost of $2051.16

DVD sets: 8 sets from TRSI and 11 from RACS. Total 19 sets for a cost of $471.16

Figures: 1 from Otacute, 11 from RACS and 12 from the comic shop. Total 24 figures for a cost of $2133.90.

Novels: 8 from the comic shop for $66.43

Artbooks: 7 from the comic shop for $192.43.

Subscriptions: 1 from ANN for $20 and 1 from Crunchyroll for $69.99

Games: 2 from RACS for $73.81.

Tee Shirts: 6 from TRSI and 6 from RACS for a cost of $143.33.

Sales Tax: $313.03

Shipping: $90.93
Note: the tax and S&H from RACS amounted to $242.32 which was offset by $244.32 in discounts from their multiple sales.

Total for the year: $7379.52

For reference: The total for 2012 was $8895.98
This included:
267 volumes of manga
58 DVDs
51 Blurays
26 Figures
4 Lithographs (art prints)
5 decks of playing cards
7 light novels
1 artbook
6 CDs
3 memberships (Crunchyroll, ANN and TRSIs Got Anime)

I've been doing this for four years now, for comparison:
2010 $8068
2011 $8120
2012 $8896
2013 $7380

The lower amount spent this year does not reflect any change in my buying habits but rather that there was simply less that I wanted.

Was 2012 the year that we were buying Bandai back stock before it disappeared? That may have inflated the number of DVD sets bought that year and the total expenses. This year is still low though.

I believe that is an affirmative. I think that's when I moved on picking up some Bandai titles that I had been putting off (Planetes, Sword of the Stranger BD, Code Geass, etc.).

Well, the only limit on the anime and manga is what is available that looks interesting. Since figures went over $100 I've tried to limit myself to those that are from shows I liked and not just something cute. And I don't import figures that way lies madness.

If they had put out more anime I wanted I would have spent more.

January 2014

A brand new year! A fresh, clean slate! That can only mean one thing!

...

I spent too much.

January is always an expensive month for me. Usually, it's because the TRSI orders I made during the Christmas sales get shipped, but in 2012 and 2013 it was because I happen to come across some OOP treasure troves. No treasure troves this year, but three separate TRSI orders did me in. Here's the damage (as always with me, all totals in CAD $):

Grand total: $1133.42

Anime: $863.30 (13 TV, 4 OVA, 7 movie)
Manga: $114.64 (20 vols.)
Subscription: $8.88 (1 – Funi)
Movie ticket(s): $11.46 (1)
Shipping: $13.05
Sales tax: $121.72

Curr. Diff: $116.00

Of the three TRSI orders, one was from Christmas and took a while to get to me because TRSI had to wait unti Berserk 37 was in stock. Two other orders I wasn't expecting to make but had to because: 1) Some Bandai OOP titles suddenly became available. I decided to tack on Bakemonogatari to that order and 2) the GoS LE DVD sprouted a counter so I snagged it and NISA's Natsume's Book of Friends Sets 3 & 4.

If you are wondering which anime film I attended at the theatre, it was Evangelion 3.0. I was kinda baked and ended up micro-sleeping through most of it. When I buy it on BD and rewatch, it'll probably seem like seeing it for the first time.

Oh, and I lost a beastly $116.00 thanks to the difference in value between the greenback and the loonie. Sad

I assume you are referring to the fact that the Canadian dollar is worth a bit less than the U.S. dollar. Look on the bright side it makes Canadian goods cheaper here so we are more likely to buy them.

There are Canadian goods exported aren't there?? Something?
