It seems like kind of a weak explanation that Lupin VIII couldn't have been made just because of a threat of litigation from Maurice Leblanc. Just a quick name change (Rupan?) and you're good to go. I happen to know that in France, they aired at least the '78 series under the title 'Edgar the Detective Thief'.
Unless perhaps because of DiC's involvement they would not have been allowed to use the 'Lupin' name even in Japan. That would certainly have been a deal breaker. |

I heard that in order to make a quick replacement for the unmakeable Lupin VIII, DiC created Inspector Gadget, which TMS animated for the first season.

That also really threw me for a loop. I begrudgingly admit to still being a fan of t.A.T.u.'s music (own all their albums) and, surprisingly, never knew there was talk of making an anime about them! I'm sure it would've been godawful, but I'm kinda sad it never came to fruition. |

Tatu!! I didn't even realize they had split up and stuff... i'm glad this article finally told me why we never got their anime thing. I would have watched it regardless of whether it turned out bad or good because Tatu made some really kickass songs (which i still listen to).

Er...so did the author pay Conan Doyle or whoever owned Sherlock Holmes for incorporating the detective into his work? Granted modern copyright laws may not have existed back then but surely these days his estate would have to pay to print the story(or stories?) with Holmes in it? I read somewhere that most Holmes stories are in the public domain now but his estate is still charging for use of the character... Just something I've always wondered about. If anyone can enlighten me please do
I assumed "the magical one" included any non-human ie demon, vampire etc character which both shojo and otome seem to have a lot of...
I did not know that. Apparently he studied child psychology at med school...all I can say is it was a good thing he didn't stay in that profession |

I like the poll, though you need to put "the housewife type" in there because that's my favorite.

Oh Despera! I had finally pushed you to the back of my mind 'til reading this thread. When I read that it was put on "indefinite hold" I was immediately depressed.
Forgive my ignorance, but has there been any recent news of Ryūtarō Nakamura's condition? |

I remember reading an article in Newtype USA spotlighting a whole bunch of anime that was in development and Mardock Scramble was one of them, I was interested because Range Murata was going to be doing the character designs.
And, yes, I remember T.a.t.u., though I don't recall anything about an anime version. I don't know if this ever came close to being done, but I read on the Wikipedia page for Dario Argento's film Suspiria that GONZO had the rights to do an anime version. I really would have liked to see this get made, even if it was a massive train wreck (a distinct possibility). |

The List is turned in several days prior to its posting on Saturdays. I'm not going to get hung up on it. |

Tatu & animation reminds me of this, which is about the closest you're going to get: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ob1Plax2n0M I'm not one of the Daria/Jane Les Yay fans, but it's fun to watch, as is the montage set to Popular from wicked. |

how do you have a harem poll and not have harem ending as an option? Clearly you have never seen anything tenchi, high school dxd, or even to love ru; the former has a harem ending, the two latter probably will have harem endings. regarding the childhood friend, where does that come from that they never win? love hina what some call a classic harem ends with him and naru, who was a girl he played with in his childhood. shuffle has him ending with asa who was his childhood friend. there are plenty of others as well, of course if its a harem and there are 4-6 character and only one is a childhood friend then the odds of them winning is lower, but that's merely a matter of probablity because to avoid the childhood friend ending any one of the other can win. So to me there is no childhood friend conspiracy. |

I'm actually a bit disappointed at the poll. The option for "this is supposed to be a literal harem; choose all of them" is missing. This is what my ideal scenario would be, and as such I cannot in good conscience vote for anything else.

From looking at the timing of everything, I believe Leblanc's estate was causing some big problems with TMS around the time of Lupin VIII, circa 1981/1982, which is why neither Lupin VIII internationally, nor a domestic Lupin III series for Japan, wasn't produced around that time. Cut to 1984 and not only are TMS able to start doing Lupin for Japan again, but France's adaptation of the series (1977 version, of course) into "Edgar" is first broadcast in 1985. Therefore whatever problems did exist, it looks like they were resolved in a couple of years. Unfortunately this appears to have been too late for DiC to bother resurrecting Lupin VIII, most probably as they had largely moved their base of operations to the U.S. by then, and a series like Lupin VIII would have been a hard sell in comparison to all the merchandise-driven series that it would have theoretically been competing with. Incidentally, I believe the idea that there are six episodes of Lupin VIII produced by TMS is a bit off the mark. What appears to be the reality is that TMS produced a showreel of spotlight scenes from potential future stories (aside from the pilot). In typical TMS style, these weren't just storyboards set to a soundtrack, but were fully animated. They just weren't full episodes. This reel, along with the pilot, are both on the recent Lupin Master File video release. |

I find the idea of a t.A.T.u. anime quite baffling to be honest. What on earth would it have been about? Them being lesbian paranormal gate investigators?
