ANN is indeed very biased towards ecchi sertes, and its also being a western site, it is not a good place to gauge what the reaction to it is.

Just wait till the NND ratings, or lurk 2ch or something.
Although I think ep.1 was already up on NND, only censored.

That's why Monster Musume got scathing reviews, yeah? Rolling Eyes Theron always talks about his love for ecchi series too, like come on. You have options to read from. Not everyone has to like the same stuff either.

What makes you think this was for teens. This is pure adult otaku pandering at it's best, but I could not believe it was for broadcast, Definitly early morning 25-2700 TX scheduel this. The censors must have realised it was getting far too much to cover with light strips and mozaics to be worth the effort and result and finally came to their senses. The H-doujins for this will be epic. Wink Laughing

I did say 'most', of course there are going to be exceptions to the rule but on the whole they do appear to have an overwhelmingly negative view of fan service which I've seen on here countless times. You have to take what they say on these series with a heap of salt because of this. Not criticising them at all for disliking what I or others like but be less biased at least.

You call it biased, I call it being mature. But to each his own.

On the contrary; the show's explicit enough where the doujin artists won't bother.

Meh, opinions are opinions, just ignore the previews.
As long as people don't think a show is 'disliked' in Japan because of what the staff or posters post on here, its not really something you should care about.

ANN has very different opinions and they are not even reflective of the whole western fanbase, let alone Japan.

What is your point that some ecchi shows are well-liked on here? How does that change anything about the gap in opinion?

That would imply taste in anime is Objective, which its simply not.
But yes, 'mature', the buzzword, does fit this place. Although that is very different from what it actually means to be mature.

These kind of shows tend to aimed at (young) adults, anyway.

I caught the first two minutes of the first episode and honestly can't blame TVQ Kyushu for deciding not to run this at least it is not completely banned from TV and Crunchyroll is still running the edited version. So while I feel for those that won't be able to see it I can also understand the Network's reasons as well.

Let's face it. This show is for a niche inside of a niche. Is for the fans of extreme echi LN's (Shinmai Mahou no Testament for exemple), mostly young adults. Even for a normal batlle harem fanservice LN fan this is maybe too extreme.

If a normal LN anime with some fanservice is not well received by most critics, how would this one be well received.

Fanservice LN anime is to most anime critics what popcorn movie blockbusters (like super heroes movies) is for movies critics. You probably will never see popcorn movie blockbusters win oscars and also you will have difficulty to get a good rating from most of anime reviewers for LN anime with some fanservice (mostly battle harems).

And about this HxH. I can understand the critics. So far the plot is really stupid. Just a excuse for the lewd scenes. But is so stupid that is funny. I know exactly what to expect from HxH and im not disappointed. But for a person that don't known what to expect, HxH is probably one of the most crazy anime out there.

One thing i don't understand is why they accept in the first place. When the production committee came to the tv station in order to buy the time slot, the tv station should know how the LN was. They should expect this kind of anime. It would be interesting to know if they only have to return the money to the production committee or they have to pay some extra penalty for falling the contract. But we probably will never know.

And Manyuu Hikenchou, Qwaser, etc. Oddly, Highschool DxD and and ToLoveRu tend to get a bunch of doujin love, but they're outliers, probably because they have fanbases just so large that it changes the rules. Otherwise, heavily fanserviced shows tend to be fully ignored.

So you come here complaining, like normal, because reviewers don't agree with your opinions on ecchi shows so obviously they don't know what they're talking about. It's obviously because ANN is western site and the reviewers are biased and not cause most ecchi shows are low on plot and substance. Of course not. Then people here point out that reviewers don't pan all ecchi shows here and actually like some and have given some pretty decent reviews. Then you ask "what is your point?" Really? Really? What is the point? They point out that your assumption is not entirely valid and you ask what's the point. And to compound on it you claim taste in anime is not objective. Ignorance is bliss as they say I suppose.

And on that note we've gotten reports regarding this OT debate on ecchi shows and reviews of the, So let's stick to the topic please and save the debating on reviews for another day. Thanks.

That's a shame, bit odd as surely they knew what the content was going to be like when the signed up to air it in the first place.

I don't think they were expecting just how explicit it wound up being.

For one you should never judge a series on the first episode,

Never say never. A lot of the time, you need three or at least two episodes to get a proper feel for the series and what it's like, but there are times you can tell after a single episode that it's just not for you.
EighteenSky wrote:
second the only negative reception I've seen to this are from those who have a disdain for fan service in general

I'm fine with fanservice generally. A great many shows I've really liked have had quite a bit of fanservice, and there's more than a few dumb pure fanservice-fests that I've greatly enjoyed. But what we've got here is not just fanservice.

If this were just a fanservicey show, we'd have tight form-fitting clothing on the female characters, generous shots of their breasts and arse, bits of nudity here and there and the occasional bit of the male lead accidentally getting an eyeful and/or grope.

What we've got is the male lead deliberately fondling and dryhumping the female cast to power them up. Including an unconscious girl. It's damn near porn, and a kinda creepy type, at that.
