How utterly awful and tragic. I'm just in shock.

Oh, crap, oh crap, oh CRAP....

This sort of thing is horrible in principle, and animation industry has its share of problems already - and WHY THE HELL PICK ON KYOTO ANIMATION, of all studios?!? One of the best and brightest corners of the industry, and this whack-job decided to curse THEM.

I can only pray the criminal gets full punishment and the victims can recover and rebuild what they can. This is truly tragic.

Not the biggest Kyoani fans but this is just plain wrong. My hearts goes to all the affected family members. Japan shocked us with some crazy crime once in a while (from certain perspective anyway since Japan is a very safe country) but I never imagine this would happened to an animation studio.

The unjust loss of people's lives is a great tragedy, no matter were or when. I hope KyoAni can survive this. They don't deserve to be brought down by some pathetic maniac.

Please do not post any rumors or unverified information in this thread. We at ANN are monitoring the situation and will be updating our articles and posting new ones as soon as we are sure all the information we are reporting on is credible and accurate.

We know everyone is still reeling and processing from this disaster. But spreading unverified rumors will only make the situation worse in both the short and long term. Thank you.

Just saying, but the suspect who spread gasoline to the first studio and even on people must've done such a crime out of sheer frustration.

Kyoto Animation is known to have at least one other studio, so it could still continue working on upcoming animated projects at reduced capacity.

This is one of the biggest tragedies in animation history.
Really, the artist who worked their poured out their soul and passion into their shows. KyoAni had some of the most beautiful animation ever made.
It seems likely that the studio will be closed permanently.

Donating ASAP; I want to see these people back on their feet as soon as possible.
And I'm not even talking about their projects.

i don't think so, as this is not their only building. however, it is a devastating loss for the studio, the industry, and most importantly the lives of the animators and their families for those who were injured or perished in the fire.

while today is a nightmare that just keeps getting worse, i believe that the fans and the industry will rally around kyoto animation and do whatever they can to support them and help them rebuild. nothing can replace the lives that were lost and all the work that was lost with them, but i hope for nothing else that they will persist if only to spite the sick and lowly arsonist who did this.

The building that was attacked was the head office and No 1 Animation Studio.

They have a No 2 animation studio and shop in a separate location.

According to Yahoo News there were approx 60 employees at the building and sadly it looks like the death toll is mounting

https://headlines.yahoo.co.jp/hl?a=20190718-00000032-mai-soci

This seems to indicate that it was NOT a disgruntled employee as this article says that it was an unknown person.

According to TV News (I live in Japan) 1 person confirmed dead and 12 are in a status believed to be dead but awaiting medical confirmation at a hospital (only a doctor can confirm death in Japan)

Shit.

Who wants to bet that had he gotten away, he'd try getting the second studio? Because I wouldn't put it past him to try such a thing (or even care if any other buildings/innocent people got caught in his hubris).

Since we can rule out "disgruntled employee", there's an image going around suggesting he might have been a pissed off 2ch poster with something to prove (or a terrorist along the lines of those shootings in NZ that just so happens to post on the site). Though what it could have been, I can't say.

Apparently 10 people were found on the 2nd floor with the appearance of being dead and won't be taken to hospital.
