lol @ Chico

Anyways, I'm done with whatever. Just wanted to throw in that South Park has already done similar things, if not worse things, as what's portrayed in Nymphet.

Also, I just remembered, but this last season had an episode where Cartman(note: they didn't actually show this) took a picture of himself with Butter's(who was sleeping) penis in his mouth.

Then, he was told this was gay, and to counter the gayness he needed to put his penis in Butter's mouth... Seconds before this happens(Butters is blindfolded and doesn't know what's going on), Butter's dad walks in on it.

It was teh lol

Very well said. A good example of this is alcohol during the prohibition era, in which speak easies were more common than not. This also shows up in music, like during the beginnings of rock and Elvis Presley. Censorship more often than not backfires on itself in that it causes more people to want to see it because it's innapropriate, that's just human nature. It's kinda like the saying curiosity killed the cat, we're curious about what's banned or looked down upon, so we tend to research it (not neccessarily making huge reports, but look it up on a wiki and whatnot) to try to understand why it's supposedly so bad.

If there's going to be a poll, include an option for "hell yeah I read it and it totally turned me on" for all the pedophiles who will supposedly be running to snap this title up. Of course a bunch of trolls will select it just for fun, but I'm not at all convinced that any pedophile worth the name would get that much from this.

From the article in question (emphases mine):
Quote:
The important context here is that the girl's advances on her teacher are never reciprocated by him; her teacher is horrified by her actions, and his romantic interest is in fact another adult teacher. The comedy arises out of this young girl saying and doing improper things (much like Crayon Shin-chan, which is currently being aired on Cartoon Network) and seeing her teacher squirm with discomfort and shock while he struggles to keep his composure, at the same time trying not to make a fool of himself in front of the woman he loves.

I get the comedy premise, that's easy enough. Horrible children saying shocking things is often funny. I like Shin Chan. I like South Park. And quite frankly, the more I learn about this title that I had zero interest in, the closer I come to wanting to check it out to see if it really is that funny.

What I do not get is where the pedo-predator payoff is supposed to be here. Are the hordes of child molester lining up to buy this book going to ignore all the "OMG! This little girl is horrible!" humor for a few panty shots?

Is anyone really going to be aroused by this? And if you are going to answer yes, do you count yourself among the aroused in question, or are you just guessing?

I know a lot of people (granted, all of them over the internet) who have been turned on by scanlations of this manga. They also look at actual pornographic loli and crap like that.

I don't see why everybody has to be either pro-loli or against it now; as I am very much conflicted. I find it sorta odd, but as long as it exists as an alternative to actual child pornography I definitely see it as a good thing. My viewpoint is that as long as it is pornographic in content then only those initially attracted to it will view it, so despite it "sexualizing children" it only affects those who desire that outlet. However, it does irritate me slightly when there are horrible amounts of loli innuendo/fanservice infect otherwise family-friendly media (I wish My-Otome would calm it down a little D: ), but as far as I can see "Nymphet" is obviously geared at a specific audience anyway. Anybody else who would enjoy the humour is obviously not affected by the gratuitous innuendo. All we can do is hope that over-reacting soccer moms don't get their grubby paws on this; stopping its release is obviously never going to happen and it would be pretty ignorant to those fans of the series anyway.

Why does everybody think Seven Seas are being so great about this anyway? Props to them for addressing the problem but why on Earth did they rename the manga something very close to "nymphette"? Methinks they may have been hoping for this controversy and discussion.

Also, somebody said something about if a young girl has a crush on an adult (particularly in a position of authority) they should seek psychiatric help. Unless this was exclusively referring to those in third grade, isn't this a gross over-reaction? It's considered acceptable for young boys to have crushes on their teachers etc. And I know I had a crush on my 24 year old teacher when I was 10/11.

Good. Hopefully we can move on, as arguing this topic really is pointless now.

I'm actually now more interested in discussing the fact that... I'm now under the impression that anime fans wield a lot more power than they think they do...

Seriously... this is PRETTY big.

I can't even begin to describe how amazed I am that it turned out like this.

But maybe I'm just overly-impressed since... well, I just wanna believe that we wield some kinda herculean power...

Who knows?

Eh, I'll personally wait until I see a more formal announcement than that cause there weren't any links or anything to a statement about it, just them saying he told them it was cancelled.

Edit: That being said, they might make a change in that announcement later. So yea, until I see something written in stone I'll wait.

Anime News Network is one of the most popular English speaking anime websites. It comes as no surprise to me that the opinions of people on these forums are heard. Although, I think it may also be that Seven Seas really listens to its fans (or in this case, people who aren't fans of it). Which actually raises my opinion of them.

The problem with your oversimplification of these studies is that it fails to separate cause from effect.

Is "subject x" more violent because he plays the violent video games, or does he play the violent video games because he has a violent nature, or are both the result of a third, unamed cause?

In other words, yours is a fallacious an argument as the previous one.

I'll take that it's oversimplified, however, my main point is that there is likely to be some kind of effect as a whole from exposure, be it violence, or in the case of the manga - sex. I simply pointed out that there are studies that do in fact show that there were those who showed aggressive tendencies more after playing the games.

It's not so much a fallacious argument as it is... an incomplete one. If I were to post the scientific results and cover the control factors that were used in them, and if those tests were conducted properly, then your considerations should be accounted for to a degree. Unfortunately, I don't have access to his information. Even so, there is nothing in my statement to show that it's inherently false.

While not everybody will agree with this man, much less every psychologist, I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss everything said by Craig Anderson. It's not as if he just dreamed this up in a single afternoon. If nothing else, those who would disagree with him should at least recognize his authority and credentials.

Well, that's just ruined my entire week. Even getting the first volumes of Haruhi and Higurashi tomorrow isn't going to cheer me up now. So much for opposing censorship Seven Seas. I don't know how many fans you've just lost, but one of them is right here.

Just like Ray Bradbury said:

"There is more than one way to burn a book. And the world is full of people running about with lit matches. Every minority, be it Baptist / Unitarian, Irish / Italian / Octogenarian / Zen Buddhist, Zionist / Seventh-day Adventist, Women's Lib / Republican, Mattachine / FourSquareGospel feels it has the will, the right, the duty to douse the kerosene, light the fuse. Every dimwit editor who sees himself as the source of all dreary blanc-mange plain porridge unleavened literature, licks his guillotine and eyes the neck of any author who dares to speak above a whisper or write above a nursery rhyme." --coda to f451

Okay this is a really pointless debate at this point. Heres why:

1) Seven Seas is gonna take some precations but ultimately release this anyway so our debating isnt going to change anything.

2) True this is problably the MOST likely to cause a stir because it has the best chance of falling into the hands of a "soccer mom" or anyone else who would cause trouble. Still though, theres far more harmful stuff out there. (anything Yaoi, hentai, etc.)

3) Most of the people here are just talking out their ass. Like it said in the letter, Theres not really anything fundamentally wrong with the concept. Ofcourse this could be presented in a innaproprite way in which case it is loli. The trouble is that without reading it you cant say wether this is the case or not. Hence, anyone argueing either way without reading it is really just presenting an uninformed assumption.

Its time to let this whole thing go. Its gonna be released. If it causes trouble theres nothing we can do. Time to drop it.

EDIT: oops shoulda read more carefully. Okay this is now pointless because it wont be released at all.

UGH. Look, Seven Seas has every right to license, publish, and distribute Nymphet to as wide an audience as they wanted. I'm sure every rational person participating in this "argument" acknowledges that. However, just because they have the right to do it doesn't mean that it's a good idea. The decision to not release the title is not one of censorship, but rather one of logical precaution.

If Seven Seas had published Nymphet, it could have potentially been a very dire move for the manga industry in general. They have made a wise decision.

4chan is watching, and they are not happy. Just thought I'd point that out in case of a potential raid.
