Uh, I think there's an error in the article.

There is no Pretty Cure manga, at least not any that would fill shelves. The anime is not based on a manga, it's an original story.

There were 2 volumes of manga that were published based on the anime (backwards from normal), and then 1 volume "mangalizations" of each of the 4 movies... Then there's the manga that's serialized in Nakayoshi, however that manga has not been collected into volumes yet.

The ANN article and the Mainichi article don't say that the manga was the original story for Precure, or that the Precure manga alone filled the bookshelves. They just said that there were Precure and other shoujo manga filling the bookshelves. The newspapers probably gravitated towards the Precure part of the collection because the guy was already telling the media--before he was arrested or even suspected--that he liked the Precure anime.

I see references to lolicon coming soon. Otaku in the case of Japan means that you don't have a life, and that you need to get one ASAP. You're wasting your life away, in a very unhealthy and anti-societal fashion.

i think the overreaction in this thread is also a little extreme as well...

anyone remember that teenager who killed his mum with a baseball bat and said evangelion made him do it a few years back...?

i barely do... and evangelion is still readily available world wide... in fact they're even remaking it...

the part about this freak liking anime is just another way to sell newspapers through bad publicity and having an imaginary 'boggie man' to point the finger at... you watch... next month, they'll have something else to write about... like maybe a man who has 5,000,000 yens worth of unpaid parking tickets likes chuck norris films or something equalling sensational...

this guy wont get out of it by saying he likes anime... the best he can hope for, is pleading insanity... in which case... i hope he likes padded cells and novocaine... because that's all he's got to look forward to... if he pleads guilty... and goes to regular prison... i shudder to think what the life expectancy of a child killer is in general population in japanese prisons... prison is a world of violence... my guess is he'll get shanked by the end of the first month... or... they'll execute him (if japan has the death penalty)...

either way... his life is over... whether you believe in the death penalty or not... this freak will suffer consequences for the rest of his life...

the truly sad thing is, the media... as always, circling a piece of news, no mater what it is... like a pack of vultures trying to snap up anything they can print and sell... and once it's all over, they'll leave and move on to the next thing they want to exploit... leaving the family of this murdered girl alone and in the cold... forgotten by the world once more...

who's even going to remember this poor kid in 6 months... i doubt anyone other than her family will... just one more murder victim in a world that is too familiar with death and suffering...

that's the real tragedy...

No kidding.
Haven't we all seen the fricken newspeopel standing there speculating? They're just praying while they're there something will break & they'll be the channel that breaks it. "Exclusive at 5".

Interview his neighbors "Gee, he seemed normal" or "I knew he was a bit off".

They are going to pour over EVERYTHING this guy did.

Look at the cable channels we have here-crime channels that play documentaries all day long about every fricken obscure murder & all the famous ones. I've flipped past that Jeffrey Dahmer interview at least 3 times in the last 6 months

My god, haven't any of you had a murder in your town?
Forget that, how about LIVED during the apprehension of a mass murderer?
And that the victim is a child only makes it bigger news.
Do we not hear about Star Trek geeks living in their parents' basement launching computer virus attacks? Vampire murders? I remember when Dungeons & Dragons was the big hoodoo.

They went thru the computer David Westerfield shared with his son who was in college & found cartoon porn which was first proclaimed in the news & press as being anime. Everyone at work knew I liked anime & people would come to me & ask about it, shaking their heads as if to wonder how I could like such stuff. After 2 weeks the anime link was broken when it turned out to be porn art of American titles like The Jetsons, but it ALL gets raked thru the mud as average normal citizens just can't get enough, but want some sort of an answer.
Who's to blame?
What can they point their finger at?
The parents even saw their lives examined with a fine-tooth comb as rumors of drugs & sex games were paraded thru the media as a reason the girl vanished from their home. They were bad parents--that's why they didn't protect their little girl.

Quote:
Westerfield pleaded not guilty, and went on trial on June 4, 2002. During the trial, Westerfield's lawyers, Steven Feldman and Robert Boyce, suggested that child pornography found on Westerfield's computer might have been downloaded by Westerfield's 18-year-old son, Neal. Neal denied this. Part of Westerfield's defense focused on the lifestyle of Danielle Van Dam's parents. The defense suggested that the couple were known for letting each other have sex with other people, and claimed that this lifestyle might have brought the kidnapper to their home.

It's the way the media circus operates

Which is usually just what these families want. Indeed most families in this similar situation have requested that they are left alone by the media, to grieve in private and peace.

No that is just human nature. Life goes on and unless we die too, on we must go as well. What is even more tragic is that sadly she will not be the last.

If the media had any brains they'd understand that this guy is loving every bit of attention they give him. He's talking about anime and manga solely because he know's the reporters will want to hear about it. He's just another sociopath who wanted to feel the power of having someone's life in his hands, murdered a defenseless little girl because he's too pathetic to actually try murdering someone who might kill him instead, and now he's getting to talk to newspaper people. The bastard's probably enjoyed all the attention.

When will people realize that unless someone's gone insane, there really isn't a valid external cause for this sort of evil? People commit murder because it makes them feel powerful or it gets them something they want. It's all about the desires of the individual and their belief that they are more important than everyone else in the world.

This guy would have done something like this whether he watched anime or paint drying. The type of personality that thinks this way forms when you're a child and it doesn't have much if anything to do with what kind of TV shows you watch.

I also too question some of the articles that appear on this site, in terms of actual relevance.
It's an instigation thread. They want people to discuss (get riled up) about it.

What ever the case, they should focus on the poor girl's death, not what anime,or how many volumes of manga Ryo had.And who gives a shit that he liked precure.I like Precure and Kitaro.Oh,and I also own a pair of wooden clogs,am I the next otaku in line to kill? Pshhh...I don't think so.

I'd rather, as I'm sure the little girl's family would as well, that he rot in his grave and save taxpayers money to keep him fed, warm, and healthy.
I keep reading that life sentences are much cheaper than the money put into putting one person through a death sentence.
I wonder if that depends on the capacity of prisons.

Don't you think that if we were actually posting news items like this to deliberately get people worked up about it that by now we'd be sick of the incredibly predictable reaction each one of them gets?

Or maybe we're just reporting the news, hmmmmmmm it's almost too simple there must be another reason!!

Oh come on! What gives you the idea ANN is deliberately posting information that has little relevance? I'm ready for an answer. Do be serious if you plan on answering.

Uhg, I'm so tired of anime fans getting negative press. Where's the story about the Nobel Prize winner who likes who likes Slayers?

Does killing him bring her back? is killing ever right?
No to both questions.

Killing is always wrong even when the state does such.

For the murder of a 5-year-old killing him is almost too good.

As for him being an anime fan and the media jumping on it...whats new. The news outlets always need an angle for a story.
