Even though I've only watched the anime, I never thought Bakugo would become a villain. He might have focused on the how All Might always wins his fights, but his overall goal was to be the top hero, instead of just being "the strongest." That always seemed like a key distinction to me since he would know that becoming a villain would mean admitting he lost. This is somebody who was mad about winning the sports festival because it was too easy.

I agree with almost everything, except that last line.
Bakugo's anger at the end of the sports festival wasn't was because he thought it was too easy, it was because he felt his pride was insulted by Todoroki.
Bakugo had just watched the fight between Deku and Todoroki, a fight in which Deku pushed Todoroki to the point that Shoto finally used the fire half of his quirk.
So when Todoroki Didn't use the fire half of his ability in his match versus Bakugo, Bakugo took that personally.
To Bakugo, Todoroki not using his fire meant that Shoto was looking down at Bakugo, saying that Bakugo wasn't worth using his full ability. Yet Deku was.
So in Bakugo's mind, he felt that Todoroki placed Bakugo beneath Deku.
Which to Bakugo is the greatest insult, since he's viewed Deku as nothing for the majority of their lives.
Bakugo wants to be seen as number 1 in eyes of everyone. Beating a Todoroki, who didn't give his all, means that there are people who would doubt his win, which would make his First place hollow and essentially meaningless.

Paraphrasing a famous quote:
"Why doth Villainy never prosper? Why, because if it prosper, none dare call it Villainy."

which pretty much gives him the definition of the word "ANTI-HERO!"

understatement of the year! especially considering how much of a woss his dad did. though i was more than positive that midnight was his mom (or at least related to him in some way) considering that pretty much everyone heard her in the final cut scenes of season 2, ep 12 when he was brushing his teeth while being completely irritated! not to mention that her interactions with him kinda showed that they knew one another long before he even got to UA!
the author definitely had me fooled!

Yeah, the only surprise of his saga was that he didn't at least try to murder the entire League of Villains the first chance he go
