Given the 2020 release date, I wonder if the sequel will focus on Haru and Rin aiming for the Olympics? I wonder if the new anime will be another full season or another movie. In spite of it's flaws, I still enjoyed season three of Free as a whole, so I'm glad to see it's still going to continue with more.

Lol Free will never end because its Kyoani’s original series and they literally swim in money after each release.

Hell yeah I'll be watching in 2020! Totally in for another season/movie!

I'm curious, can the Free! series be considered as KyoAni's longest running series now? 3 TV series, 4 movies, and another part on the way is impressive in my book.

Season-wise (not counting the films), yes. Episode-wise....well, so far, that title goes to Clannad (if you include Clannad After Story), so if this sequel ends up being a fourth season and has enough episodes to surpass it, yes.

Either way, I’m a little behind on season three, so I need to catch up.

I don't know, I thought the second season was a perfectly fine stopping point for the franchise, and Dive to the Future suffered from too many characters and the fact that the four main ones weren't in the same club anymore. Maybe next season could be better if Nagisa and Rei went to the same university as Haru, but I'm not sure I want to see Free! keep going until Haru retires from professional swimming after breaking all of Michael Phelps's records.

Someone pointed out that Free! season 1 aired in 2013, the same year, the same summer Tokyo won the bid to host the Summer Olympics. I need to check to be 100% sure but iirc Rin had his sight on the world stage even back then. Coincidence...I think not.

For real though I was certain that we'll be betting a Free! x Olympics collab in 2020 - seems like a promotion too good to pass - but not this!

If you're telling me that KyoAni planned this for 7 years, in order to have a franchise with 2020 Olympics relevance, I'll scream, then tip my hat in respect for the sheer brilliance of it all.

The marketing would be genius. Limited edition Olympic Free! merchandise, anyone?

Wikipedia says Japan won the bid for the summer Olympics on September 7th 2013. The High Speed light novel came out in Japan on July 8th and the anime began broadcasting on July 4th. So I do think it's a coincidence that it came out the same year but Kyon Ani is clearly riding on that coincidence.

Despite the cramming of so many characters and most of the action taking place outside the pool I still enjoyed this and considering the cliffhanger I'm looking forward to more Free! in the future. Great that it coincides with the Olympics, that just adds to the anticipation although it will seem like a long wait. At least we have the movies being released in a few days and I can watch what we already have.
