Not surprising. I was going to go last year. I hope to go next year, assuming everything’s behind us.

I suspect almost all cons will be cancelled this year. Even if everyone was vaccinated by summer, it could still take months to bring the numbers down to safe levels, and even then organizers would be slow to reopen. It also takes them months to organize which they can't do until they feel it's worthwhile.

not shocked in the least, 2021 will be no different when it comes to conventions/events in the anime/gaming communities. I'll just be blunt and say it, don't look forward to any upcoming conventions AT ALL this year.

If you've asked me last year if we will have a 2021 event, I would've said, "I hope so". This is unfortunately expected. Anime Boston was my first anime con, and have been going there every year since. Even the one during 2012 when PAXEast was going on at the same time. Speaking of which, I doubt they (PAXEast) will be back this year as well, even with their slated summer date. Not expecting conventions to be a thing until 2022, maybe late 2021 the earliest.

I can't blame them for outright cancelling. Postponing could run into the same problems where it either isn't allowed or isn't advisable, and it's not like a convention can be rescheduled without a lot of effort. Virtual conventions are a neat idea and all, but I'm not sure how much interest there is. At least personally, I tried the Funimation one over July 4th weekend, and it didn't really hold my interest. My local convention also did online, but since there was obviously no guest involvement and I predominantly go for the guests, I didn't even bother with it after looking at the planned schedule.

Not sure how Funi did it, but when PAXOnline did it, they did try and make it as close to the convention experience all within Discord. Virtual swag bags with gacha emotes, a typing minigame. Channels for game announcements, cosplay, game tournaments, etc. It was fun for a while. Though my interests waned after about three days, but still checking in one in a while, and it was a nine-day event. Even took a week off for it, I guess there was only so much content virtually you can consume in a moment. As weird as it is to say it, there is a benefit for all that waiting/queuing for the next thing, letting what you experienced soak in better. Not to say they were dead halfway through, there are still people chatting it up there, it just leveled out. I mostly concentrated on the Animal Crossing, Keyboard typing challenge, and cosplay channels.

It also helped that it was effectively three conventions rolled into one IIRC. Wonder if an anime con can so the same thing, have a couple of anime cons join together over Discord for a weekend or a week, especially if said cons typically run around the same weekend or two. Most online anime con experiences I heard of are typically hosted by one. Of course, I'm thinking mainly about audience/con-goer retention for the event.

There are still cons in my area (NJ and NY) that are scheduled to happen later this year.

PuchiCon - August 30-31 (Atlantic City, Showboat Hotel)
DerpyCon - October 30-31 (New Brunswick, NJ, Hyatt)
AnimeNYC - November 2021 (Jacob Javitts)

Given how by that time just about everyone in these two regions are vaccinated it should be safe to go again -- at least there.

It's adorable how anyone believes there will ever be any conventions allowed to happen ever again -- or it would be if it weren't so unutterably pathetic.

Cons will be allowed again after we reach herd immunity. It's a matter of when, not if. Of course, "when" may vary, but cons never again? Sorry, I don't see that. Anime cons are too popular to go away. They will happen again.
