how many tickets did evangelion sell? going by money was never a good measure of popularity due to price changes but especially not recently since prices spiked due to covid making theaters less ideal to go to

Japan is fairly inflationless, so much so that ticket prices are still pretty comparable to even the 90s (other than a small increase due to premium formats, but really not that big, and the base ticket price is just about the same).

To answer the question, by the way, Evangelion had more expensive tickets than OP red on average (not sure if the film had premium prices - which does happen to some films, i.e. Aniplex distributed films or Gundam films - or just skewed extremely hard towards premium formats, but I'm guessing a little bit of both), so the gap just becomes bigger on that metric (the average evangelion ticket price was 1525 yen, whereas for OP it's currently ~1400 yen).

Just over 6.69 million tickets, compared to One Piece Film Red's 8.2 million tickets:

While inflation has spiked in many countries, prices — especially for movie tickets — have been relatively steady in Japan. The major chains Toho Cinemas and 109 Cinemas made news in 2019 for raising their general admission prices for the first time in 26 years. Even then, prices only went up from 1,800 yen (about US$13.25) to the current 1,900 yen (about US$14).

One point to keep in mind is that One Piece Film Red sells more discounted tickets (such as children's tickets) than Evangelion: 3.0+1.0. That's why One Piece Film Red sold far more tickets than Evangelion: 3.0+1.0, even though their box office totals are similar.

I don't think we'll see anything topple Demon Slayer for another 20 years. Too many unique conditions at the time to replicate.

This film could potentially crack the Top 10 domestic films of all time for Japan. But we're still many months away from that.
