OK, I'm actually impressed--reasonable video quality, good sound, full screen without too much blur--they may actually have gotten it right. If they can get a few other studios to hop on, they may be on track to make an actual dent in the fan-subs, especially for people who juat want to see something before they have to buy it.

I know that many people like subs and I can understand why, but, and I know this has been asked before, why is it looked down on to like your anime dubed? |

Some sub fans like to make themselves feel superior to other fans. They picked dub fans to feel superior to because they are their opposites. That's it. It's just one group of fans enjoying a feeling of superiority over others. Enjoying dubs is perfectly acceptable and should not be treated as a negative. Though I think nkaze was just saying he wants subbed anime rather than dubbed, not that dubbed was inherently bad. (Still, since sub fans demand dub fans put up with subs when that's the only thing available, I do wonder why so many of them refuse to do the same when the reverse is true.) |

Because not paying a second set of voice actors goes a huge way to lowering the cost of moving a show from R2 to R1 ($13-$15 rather than $22-$25 in my experience). Also, if you ever watch a show with both the sub and dub tracks, you'll notice that the sub follows the original script a bit closer, in part because the lines do not need to match up with the movement of the mouths. Also, I'm assuming as I know this to be the case with subs from other languages, the sub-script writer understands that those willing to read their movies (anime, etc) are more likely to be interested in the original work than those that just want to enjoy the show. That being said, I agree that the whinnying can get annoying, and if a dub is all that's available, I'm more than willing to go for it. |

I'd say the better answer is that even if the Japanese voice acting is lazy, we can't hear it come through in the performance, while if the American voice acting is lazy, we definitely can. We can also hear when American voice actors fumble through Japanese names or words awkwardly, which is a lot more common than when the Japanese fumble through American names or words awkwardly, but at least for their case, it's usually amusing instead of irritating, because we know they have fewer sounds in their language than we do. There are good dubs out there, but they're usually the exception to the rule and have to be discovered, you can't speculate which dubs will be good or which will be bad. |

As someone sufficiently fluent in Japanese to grade voice performances, I'd say that there's plenty of "phoning it in" to be had in both camps. English versions still tend to be lower-par in performance, but the gap is not wide, and there are a good number of shows that are simply better in English. (Of course, there are plenty of shows made unwatchable by dubs as well.)
Every argument one way or the other can be disproven. Yes, some Japanese dubs are better, but not all of them, and most not by a wide margin. Yes, some subtitles are more accurate, but many are overly literal at the cost of tone and nuance (and fansubs tend in that direction more than professional ones). Yes, sometimes you want to be lazy and watch while folding clothes or doing housework, which is near-impossible to do with subtitles. Yes, some American voice actors are really good, but most have a selection of 2-3 "character voices" and aren't really good actors at all. Yes, most Japanese seiyuu are exactly the same, including some pretty big names. In other words, tell the annoying people to STFU and watch what you like if it's available. If not, ask for it politely. The end.

Again, it does me NO BLASTED GOOD if Hulu is a wasteland of red tape.
Look, I can watch Slayers and Shikabane Hime (albeit in lower quality) on Funimation's Youtube channel, there's no legal reason for this utter nonsense that Hulu does 'cept that I's be British and they apparently hate the lime. But oh well, what does anyone care, I'm a euro-peon and my monies, that are worth DOUBLE their "superior" American Dollars apparently summon the dark god Zardoz and causes super Armageddon if the superior American hand ever touches the dirty limey money. Until there's a time where I can watch these shows legally (and not tear my arse in half having to import them), I'm afraid that means that I will be forced into visit the grandé under net. Slayers less so but the idea fits. |

If you can watch it on FUNi's YouTube then keep watching it there. Hulu is Region 1 only.

Enough of this sub vs. dub crap. I think its a good thing that Funi is making stuff more available to people. If its dubbed then fine. Why are people complaining about something they are getting for free anyhow?

My friends are deaf students at CSUN (CA State University in Northridge), and ask me they want subs not dubs   I think they need to buy dvd setbox.
