Any guesses on what's stopping its release? I figure it's something to do with the fact that tweaking those knobs requires a third hand.

I honestly don't know what is the point of making this. I mean it takes way too much real-time handling skill of the keyboard to make it work. In my opinion this is such a useless performance product, that no one is going to use it except of those Hatsune Miku fans because you can make higher quality music with just the vocaloid software probably. But I guess an invention is an invention.......

The synthesized vocal sounds came a long way since its inception. Recently, I saw a NHK program about the origin and the difficulties in overcoming vocal sounds without stringing out robotic sounds. According to the creator there are over 500 different ways to connect syllables in Japanese language so that the words sound natural to human ears.
According to this program advances in synthesized vocal sounds are not just in entertainment, one big benefactor is in medical fields with people who lost their vocal cords. And moreover, according to this program in the future robots will speak to us with “human” quality. I guess the lesson is that technologies help us advance for the future whether the science is muddled now.

The article did say that Yamaha is not going to sell the item commericially. Companies make all kinds of stuff that is only sold to businesses and what not all the time...so I doubt the fans will easily get a hold of an item like this.

It's pretty cool, but to be able to perform a song live with that needs some skill.

Looks like it would take a lot of practice to have a smooth & natural sounding performance. I suspect it would be tough to master.

To those who think that this Vocaloid keyboard will be a handful, you have to realize that Miku is monophonic (ie. single notes at a time, not chords). That leaves the left hand completely free while the right hand plays the melodies. The controlling of the syllables is no different than controlling the pitch and modulation wheels/joystick that normal keyboards have. That said, the layout could definitely use some work. Of course the keys will need to be velocity-sensitive and have an overall adjustable envelope to provide a more tactile experience resulting in a more realistic live performance. As for the knobs, they are pretty much set-and-forget although, if necessary, the keyboard's designers could allow for parameters to be foot-controlled as on most normal keyboards.

There have already been many ways to control Vocaloids in real-time, but this is the first time it is in a single standalone unit. It beats having to set up your laptop, programs, MIDI controller(s), speakers, etc. I totally want one Anime hyper

Medical applications aside, there are also industrial applications ie development of machines that can function better than we have today. Vocaloids may be leading the way toward machines that have voices that are indistinguishable from humans.
