I've really been enjoying this, as a fan of the original series I feel this is very familiar yet different. I like the way some of the old cast are still involved but i like the new characters too and the shift in club demographic means a shift in the topics of conversation.

I have the 5 volumes that are out but its going to be a while until the next, im guessing its the old low sales monster again but if it helps get all the volumes out i can wait.

I admit that I may be having issues empathizing with G2 because I'm not female, but first series ran 55 chapters and approx. half was focused on Ogiue's story. G2 has already run about the same number of chapters and the VAST majority is focused on Hato. My main issue with G2 is that while Genshiken (1) was about a club of anime/manga nerds, G2 feels like it's a story about Hato and everyone else is just there to supplement Hato's story. And at least for me, Hato's story is frankly no longer compelling after the first 25 chapters or so. But I'll also admit that I got sick of (non-nerd) Kasukabe in G1 too.

I really DO wish that Shimoku was willing to give more focus to Yajima & Yoshitake though.

I am actually not a fan. My MU/amazon review:

Just a pointless sequel (5/10)

Genshiken 1 is good and told a complete story with characters that made sense. This one has characters which make no sense whatsoever and are just weird and quirky to be just that.
No one is believable, almost no story progression is had and i get the impression that this sequel was just commissioned to print money and get a new anime made that is based on a brand that was internationally successful in the past. I just see blind greed on Afternoons and the authors side and no intention to make a good manga. I understand that writing is just a way to make money in the end but the final product should actually be worthwhile in the end and not just stand in the shadow of a prequel or even taint it.
But hey at least the art is still good, for what that is worth.

I think you are being too harsh though I agree with teh general idea; after genshiken I tried the author's other works and got really, really bored. I bet I was not the only one and that is why the author went back to genshiken, but since she had already ran out of ideas in the first run we got the fujoshi version.
While it feels like genshiken it's like orange juice tasting like orange, the essence is here but not the substance, I still find it fairly entertainign, simply because an ifnerior genshiken is still a decent read especially against ny possible competition, like compare this to oreimo.

@maximilianjenus I came in positive and gave it a few volumes but when i saw that the anime was getting made while the manga still had no point i saw for what is was. An easy way to print a bit of money and to chase former glory. So there is my problem with the work and i looked at the recent stuff for a sec. and nope do not need it. I stand by my neary 2 year old review.
This new manga devalues the original ending and that is sad.

The original Genshiken was fantastic, I've been following scans of this new Genshiken for some time though and honestly I'm not a fan. These new characters do nothing for me, and just makes me miss the old characters more.

I liked the first volume it was a promising start to a new era in the series after the first two volumes though...

I'm five volumes into this series and looking forward to the sixth. What I really enjoy about the series as a whole is the way in which the story has changed and developed to reflect the changing world, and also how the characters are developing.

Yajima and Yoshitaki are solid new characters, and I'm fascinated to see where Shimoku is going to take Hato's story.

For a modern take on (art)college life i recommend the mangas:
Logick(8/10) and Natsu no Zenjitsu (9/10).

I still really like the second season because IMO Shimoku is one of the very few mangaka that is able to write very naturalistic dialogue. I don't think he ever wrote a character that I actively dislike thanks to that.

That said, I can see why a lot of people don't like it. It's much more comedic by way of quirky characters instead of otaku club slice-of-life the first season is. You could say it's a different flavor.

Sometimes I wonder if it would be better off not attached directly to the Genshiken legacy and instead as a different title, but could be perceived to be related to it, like Spotted Flower (aka 'What if Saki and Madarame got married?').

I don't think you can accuse Afternoon or the author blind greed. Genshiken has never been a multimedia project right from the start like other anime often are. Anime adaptions have only been green-lighted when the series had a successful run in the magazine. The first chapters of the second series appeared in early 2010 whereas the nidaime series was broadcasted in summer-autumn of 2012, more than two years after the new chapters had started. That's exactly like in the old series (started early 2002, tv broadcast was spring/summer 2004 IIRC). Considering that it usually takes one to maximum two years to produce a tv series only suggests to me that an anime adaption of the new series was not written in stone from the start yet.

As for the characters, I agree that they're more quirky than in the first season but I don't think no one is believable or makes no sense. Madarame's progression from excentric otaku loser to just pathetic loser with a broken heart and relationship with the other female members for example has been quite interesting so far, at least to me. I just wished the series would focus a bit less on Hato, that's all.

Genshiken is one of my favorite manga, even this second "season." Like previous posters, I'm enjoying how Shimoku Kio is using the characters to explore more recent trends in anime-- the rise of fujoshi as a strong fandom, and the "trap" character. Even though I agree that this season isn't as strong as the first, as a female fan I appreciate a variety of well-written female characters who are not just there to represent different bra cup sizes. As a sometime yaoi fan I am savoring the tease of spoiler[Hato x Madarame] (is that even a spoiler??), not the (practically nonexistent) possibility that it will actually happen, but how their total awareness of it as an anime setup flavors their interactions.
