Yeah I heard about it last week. It's not only Japan, but worldwide too (which include Europe) from what I heard. It's sad to see this go. Sad

If it wasn't used much and they weren't making enough $ from it, I can see them cancelling. If neither is the case, I don't know why they would do this.

It seems that the mobile service hasn't received much use and probably wasn't generating enough cash to keep it running...

The article has things slightly misunderstood (without, thankfully, the OMGVitaDead!1!1!1!! hysteria of other articles I've seen)

The original Playstation Mobile was a Mono (C#/,net) based SDK that allowed limited access to the Vita hardware. You could also compile and deploy them onto Android phones running the PSM Runtime. The only officially supported devices are "Playstation Certified" Sony phones. Through hacks, support was extended to other Android handsets.

PSM 2.0 retains the Mono based system, but eliminates all targets but the Vita. It is still abstracted from the Vita hardware and not as powerful as the native SDK. Unity is available for free (or really cheap) for PSM developers vs costing a fair amount for Vita developers.

Sony (at least in the US) allowed the PSM marketplace to become a crapware shovel, obscuring the few good (some, very good) games available there.

But shovelware will be common on any decently popular platform. Shovelware makers will continue to exist, and in large quantities, and they will flock to whatever is the most popular platform at the time (whether it's the PS1, PS2, Wii, or iOS/Android). If PlayStation Mobile got a lot of shovelware, then that must mean a lot of these makers saw potential in it.

Yeah I've been hearing about it a lot. So looks like Sony will be dropping out of the smartphone business leaving Apple, South Korea companies (LG and Samsung), and the upcoming Chinese competitors (Huawei, and Xiaomei).
