The school is full of sheltered girls who have never met male peers before.

Stupidly long name. Porn game premise. Generic character designs. Yup, it's another light novel adaptation.

Should also be pointed out, at least going by the manga adaptation, that the male lead being selected to be the "commoner sample" was due to the incorrect belief that he was gay and so would't develop any inappropriate relationships with the girls. That was due to those gathering information on him getting their information from a bias and inaccurate source. He's also not able to correct them about this, because knowledge of the existence of this school is some sort of huge secret so they'd simply lock him up for the rest of his life if he's unable to attend the school as their "commoner sample".

I'm usually tolerable to harem LN adaptations but this is pretty lame.

Well, I'm the opposite. When it comes to the lead female being a step-sister or blood sister to the main guy, that's when I won't invest my time in it. Ironically, I ship Mikasa and Erin yet they are essentially foster or adopted brother and sister.

On a side note, that promotional pic of Idol College is from the new OP of the upcoming PS Vita Nepgame Geki Jigen Blanc + Neptune Vs. Zombie Gundan - as previewed earlier this week.

It seems that they will be at a live event to promote the game, alongside Asumi Kana (Blanc/White Heart) and Honda Mariko (Tennouboshi Uzume/Orange Heart).

As it happens, Hara Yumi is also involved with that title, as the Japanese voice of Famitsu-chan (who was first playable in Hyperdimension Neptunia U: Action Unleashed).

Generic-sounding Guy + A School built on obsolete notions + Uninspired Harem Premise = Something Stupid This Way Comes.

I've been reading the manga adaptation for some time now, and despite all its generic qualities, I found it to be a quite enjoyable SoL work (even if it wasn't the intent). Whether or not that feeling will transfer to the anime version is a different question.

So what is AKB48's purpose, then?
