Sword Art Online: Ordinal Scale Film Tops Japanese Weekend Box Office

Live-action One Week Friends film debuts at #3

The Sword Art Online: Ordinal Scale anime film ranked #1 in the Japanese box office for the February 18-19 weekend. The film opened in Japan on Saturday in 150 theaters.

The film will screen in United States theaters for a one-night event on March 9, and will screen in Canada on March 17-19. Prior to the wide release, Aniplex of America will host a premiere event in Hollywood, California on March 1.

The Kadokawa had announced in October that the film would be "simultaneously released worldwide on February 18, 2017.” The film will screen in about 1,000 theaters worldwide.

The live-action film of Matcha Hazuki's One Week Friends (Isshūkan Friends) manga ranked #3 in its opening weekend. The film opened in Japan on Saturday.

Makoto Shinkai's your name. (Kimi no Na wa.) anime film dropped from #6 to #8. The film is on its 26th weekend in Japan. Sunao Katabuchi's (Mai Mai Miracle, Black Lagoon) In This Corner of the World anime film fell from #8 to #9 in its 15th weekend. This is the film's 15th consecutive week in the box office top 10.
