Company reveals 10 titles available for Japanese version of console

Sega announced at the "Sega Fes 2019" event in Tokyo on Saturday that it will release its "Mega Drive Mini" (also known as Sega Genesis Mini) console on September 19. Sega did not confirm if the release date is also for the worldwide release, but did state previously that the console will get a simultaneous global release.

Sega will release the console in Japan with one controller for 6,980 yen (about US$63), and with two controllers for 8,980 yen (about US$81). The console will include an HDMI connection and a USB port for charging.

Sega revealed 10 of the 40 titles that will be included in the Japanese version of the console.

  • Sonic the Hedgehog 2
  • Puyo Puyo 2
  • Shining Force: Kamigami no Isan (Shining Force: The Legacy of Great Intention)
  • Vampire Killer
  • Wrestleball (Powerball)
  • Gunstar Heroes
  • Comix Zone
  • Rent A Hero
  • Space Harrier II
  • Madō Monogatari I

Two of the games featured above (Puyo Puyo 2 and Sonic the Hedgehog 2) are also part of Sega's "Sega Ages" project for Nintendo Switch.

The console was originally planned for release in 2018, but was delayed

The console will feature "memorable famous games" that Sega originally released on the Mega Drive. Sega-Sammy Holdings Inc.'s President and CEO Haruki Satomi stated last year the "Mega Drive Mini" will be different from an "overseas version" now on sale. Sega is itself planning and releasing the console.

The Mega Drive was Sega's third console, and Sega released the console in Japan in 1989. Sega released the console in the same year in North America under the name Sega Genesis. Sega withdrew from the games console market in 2001.
