There's a surprisingly wide chasm between “erotica” and “pornography” that I only recognize once I'm jolted from one to the other. Magical Incense is set very firmly in the latter camp, defined by its abundant onomatopoeic sound bubbles, copious fluids, and swollen genitalia taking up more of the panel than any one character's drooling face. The plot is nearly non-existent, but let's be honest, nobody is reading this for the plot. Clocking in at nearly 200 pages, this story features an impressive cornucopia of sexual variety, offering a treasure trove of spank bank material.
Kugayama is a high school boy with an uncommonly feminine face (all the better to contrast with his massive peen). In true Porn Logic, he reasons that if he crossdresses, he'll get his male crush to notice him even if that crush is straight. (Who is this crush? Who cares!) Perhaps Kugayama just enjoys crossdressing, because he's got an additional, supernatural solution in his corner. Every night he burns a cone of magical incense, which prompts him to pleasure random men he comes across in his dreams. When the incense runs out, he is told, his wish will come true. In the meantime, however, there is a lot of incense to get through! The reader gets a front row seat as Kugayama engages in anal, in blow jobs, gives foot jobs, has sex in lingerie, cosplay, and fetish outfits; pleasures a mob of classmates in drag, is accosted by a mob of older men, penetrates an older man, has sex with another femboy, has hate sex with a rival for his crush's affection, and I'm surely forgetting some of the stuff he gets up to. It's perhaps the least sexy way to review this story—as a laundry list of various physical acts—but what I'm trying to convey here is just how extensive the variety is. The art style is fairly standard for porn of this type, featuring ahegao faces, enlarged dicks and nipples, and cum everywhere. Still, I'll note that the way this author draws penises is weirder than I've seen before: the head of the penis flares several inches beyond the shaft and looks for all the world like a mushroom.
When it comes to sheer length and variety, this porn gives you a real bang for your buck—pun intended. However, even as many, many sex acts are performed, all of the characters apart from the mob of older men have similar slim, teenage bodies and may appear too young for some readers. If you're interested in what a femboy with a huge cock gets up to in his expansive imagination, this wide-ranging wet dream leaves no stone unturned.

Kugayama begins this book kind of as a immature teen boy. His fantasies are complicated and unrealistic. When offered the chance to gain his true desire by experiencing nightly sexual pleasures with the boys in his class that only he will remember, he agrees. The woman he takes the incense from, Sakura, turns out to be like Kugayama, a man who can pass as a woman, but is happy with his man's body.
Kugayama's dreams, and his true desire become more and more complicated, until he meets Katakura, who can remember what happened in the dreams and forcefully rejects Kugayama. At some point Kugayama realizes that his gender identity is complicated and that Katakura and he are much the same.
Something shifts in Kugayama. He's focused now on working his way through the magical incense, because he understands himself finally and hopes to help Katakura come to the same understanding.
The sex here is explicit, with the same sploosh and splorshes, and weirdly stilted language porn has always contained. Kugayama's dream experiences run into non-consensual and gang-bang scenes, but as he's agreed to all of this in advance, it's kind of consensual non-consensual sex? You could make a case for reading it whichever way turns you on the most.
I has been a long time since I read porn, and probably longer since I read boys-cross-dressing-as-girls-porn. Yuri has long left the forbidden love back room, and I don't need to trawl 18+ shelves as often as I used to. While this book is very much not for me, or more accurately I'm not for it, I'm glad it exists. Someone out there is served perfectly by this story. Amidst all the sex sounds and bodily fluids there is a kernel of a story about a young guy who finds his sexual and gender identity, creates a kink community around him, and gets to have his happily-ever-after.

If you have the ability to live out your fantasies every night, what would you think about? That seems to be the ethos of Magical Incense, which focuses around a young boy named Kugatama who comes across some mysterious incense that could potentially be used to grant his wish. This seems pretty innocent at face value, as he just wants another guy to look his way, but this incense manifests a different desire for him, cross dressing and getting fucked by a different student in his class every night. I don't think the book does a good job of properly establishing how that correlation works, but it is a fun to see what initially seems like it's setting up a sort of fuck of the week format where each chapter is, going through a different type of sexually charged dream.
This book is definitely leaning into that very specific appeal with a feminine looking guy with a big dick. In fact, according to some of the author's notes at the end of the book, this was almost a futanari story apparently, and I can definitely see elements of that here. There's even a character that looks traditionally feminine in almost every way and the book almost seems to take advantage of the fact that it is a manga to hide their true nature from the audience. There are definitely a lot of fun ideas that are being played around with here and I respect the fact that the book is throwing out realism for the sake of creating as many sexual scenarios as possible.
It doesn't feel like the story is constantly trying to build up itself as much as it is just trying to be creative on a chapter-by-chapter basis. I respect that, and the different dreams each chapter did prevent me from being bored. I like the different outfits that our lead Kugatama wears and how he comes to terms with the reality that he has to live with the memory of those dreams while the students that he's fucking don't. Some are one-on-one teasing sessions while another is a full class orgy. I could read volumes of these different types of sexual fantasies if they were able to maintain the quality just found in this one book.
The ending genuinely snuck up on me. The ending isn't just abrupt, it arguably resolves a different story while the main conflict is resolved off screen. Even if the story was just a pretense in order to establish this set up, I still hoped that things would get resolved for a satisfying sense of narrative payoff, but that just isn't here at the end. It especially sucks because the main issue revolved around a romance that we just didn't get to explore. It almost felt like there were pages missing.
I won't spoil anything, but reading the author's notes at the end of the book was interesting because there are a lot of them. They go into detail about what the story initially was conceived as, how things were almost darker than what they appeared, and offer an explanation for the abrupt way of how the story ended. I do wish more porn stories had in-depth breakdowns from the author like this, but given the fact that not every porn story is as complicated as this one, I can understand why we don't have that. Still though, I think this book is worth reading for a lot of those initial one off chapters, especially if you wanna see a feminine boy get dicked down.
