Battle Angel (OAV) | Very good
Cowboy Bebop (TV) | Excellent
Death Note (TV) | Excellent | Very impressed with this series. It starts off with a simple premise and just explodes with convolutions in the "rules" surrounding the usage of the death note and the corresponding complexities and feints in deductive reasoning surrounding the capture of Kira. Some of the resulting absurdities reminded me of the investigative paradoxes of A Scanner Darkly, which ends in similar tragedy. The series lags a bit at the end of the first arc and never fully recovers during the second arc before the ultra-intense finale, which somewhat makes up for lost time... but not quite. |
Elfen Lied (TV) | Excellent | Absolute genius in making the viewer uncomfortable in a variety of ways... making the fan-service moments all the more incongruous, unnecessary, and downright creepy. Hence the bump in the rating. The ending made me want to pick up the manga, and I seriously hope they entertain the idea of continuing the series someday. |
Grave of the Fireflies (movie) | Masterpiece
Howl's Moving Castle (movie) | Very good
Kiki's Delivery Service (movie) | Excellent
(The) Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (TV) | Not really good | Wow, this one was SO overhyped by otaku, even for the slice-of-life/quirky-harem style of anime it was. It's the show where nothing happens, like Seinfeld, only without the funny. I watched the whole thing, and wanted my time back -_- |
My Neighbor Totoro (movie) | Masterpiece
Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (movie) | Masterpiece
Neon Genesis Evangelion (TV) | Excellent
Neon Genesis Evangelion: Death & Rebirth (movie) | Very good
Ninja Scroll (movie) | Very good
Perfect Blue (movie) | Very good
Princess Mononoke (movie) | Masterpiece
Spirited Away (movie) | Masterpiece
Vampire Princess Miyu (OAV) | Very good
(The) Vision of Escaflowne (TV) | Masterpiece | My re-entry into anime was via Evangelion and Cowboy Bebop. I actually was prepared to write off anime for awhile when I took a shot at Escaflowne. This series convinced me that anime could be more than obtuse pseudo-intellectual mech drama, or immature, episodic, bullets-and-tits action. This series did it's own thing and appealed to my taste for fantasy, strong characters, and an ambitious story arc, while still retaining humor and the various trappings that make anime what it is. A masterpiece in my book. |
Wolf's Rain (TV) | Very good | Started strongly, then fizzled by the end. The Romeo & Juliet style ending felt like a cop out, but was fairly fulfilling. The recap episodes were ridiculous, so I only watched one (ep 15) and skipped the subsequent three. |
