Because Tokyo is the Core Capital city of Japan. All major business are located there. TAF is the Tokyo International Fair, where it has always been held successfully. |

Interesting graphic about who's gonna be AWOL from TAF.
Mod note: Images shouldn't be wider than about 600px across, otherwise you're breaking tables. |

Who knows? We haven't seen all the cables about the American embassy in Japan and their consulates and maybe they can give us some kind of surprise (P.E. the U.S was forcing Spain to adopt an American-style copyright laws. Needless to say, the Spaniards are pissed due to this) |

How? Was not the first attempt at this law voted down and called unconstitutional. So the proposition was reworded to accomplishes the same effect as the first go around but this time with even wider scope. To many it looks the damn same as the first time, unconstitutional. If only this proposition was about child porn then all those publishers and writers that don't do child porn would not have their interests at risk. |

Different countries have different censorship laws. It's not particularly oppression if research has shown that their methods decrease specific medium influenced youth violence. If they believe 18 is mature enough, Kami-sama bless them! If the evidence doesn't indicate that, then I agree with the boycotter's. Simple as that.

I've been following related news about this Bill since June, which had been defeated because how unclear the bill had been written.
The drafted Bill in June only regulated any content that's related to minor (i.e., age <18), but the modified Bill in Nov/Dec regulate "All age", and it will affect incredibly large population (creators, industry, and fans in general). Many of the important manga creators already made public statements that they are against the Bill since June, including the creator of "Doraemon", which may be the most famous manga aimed for children, and has been loved by general public. One of the main character, "Shizuka", loves to take a bath, and there are multiple stories where the scene of her taking a bath was drawn in the manga. The problem is, Shizuka is a minor, so her nude body (or body part), "may elicit the interest of pedophilia", and will be affected by the Bill (both the June version and the recently modified version). The Tokyo Government, stated that the bill will not affect "Doraemon", when questioned, and stated that there would be a "pamphlet" made to explain such. The problem is, the "pamphlet" is not the Bill itself. Whatever include in the pamphlet has no legal power. The lawmaker can make another pamphlet on the next day and change everything. The Lawyer Association in Japan already pointed out this danger and publicly stated that they are also against the Bill. The modified Bill also included a sentence saying that any "inappropriate sexual conduct against law" will be regulated. It looks OK at first, right? But it is the "current Japanese law". That is, if someone decides to draw manga on Japanese History, or Greek mythology, or the Japanese Classic "The story of Genji" it would be affected by the Bill. Because there are stories about incest, or marriage to a minor (age of majority used to be 15 years old in Japan) in such content. Despite all the protests since June, the modified Bill still does not address these problems, and the Tokyo Government did not even try to work with the people that would be affected (not only the publishers, but also the creators, or even the children they claim to protect). The Tokyo Mayor Ishihara himself, is a novel writer, and his most famous novel has graphic descriptions of rape (and group rape). How funny he excludes novel as part of the proposed regulation in the Bill. The supposed "PTA organizations are supporting this Bill" is a joke, because there are many information stating the parents are NOT involved (That is, the chairpersons or the committees made such annoucement without telling their members) or not being provided with correct information if they do involve (i.e., the Bill will only affect manga/animation with content such as rape, or "hard core" sexual activities). That's another problem, the media, for some reason, either did not cover the story, or provide misleading information only. In addition, the Tokyo Government intentionally chooses a voting date that is too close to allow time for public comments or discussion. All of the above moved the publishers to actually "do" something to catch public attention. TAF just happened to be chosen. |

Good on those ten, this sort of action needs to be taken against such a draconian measure. |

Huh, that image I posted went small on my screen when I posted it. Too bad, it did show the impact of the defections.
Eh, i'll just leave this little temper tantrum here from the man of the hour: 石原慎太郎都知事 東京アニメフェアへの角川書店の不参加に対する反応 |

That would be AWESOME, as I LIVE on the border of Saitama and Tokyo. However, I don't really see it happening. Akihabara survives just as much its electronics as it does on its anime. All of the towns over here are bedroom communities.
Yeah, but a lot of businesses, and I mean a lot have moved their operations to Osaka. Tokyo is still the core city, but Kyoto and Osaka, especially when considered as one entity, are giving it a run for its money. |

Time to move the entire city elsewhere? Tokyo's business, if not the entire Japan is going out of business as an entire industry. Hell just froze over... |

So it's Shintaro Ishihara who behind this a denier of Nanking and thinks the Chinese are garbish tally ho for the 10 Manga Publishers who are boycotting the Tokyo Anime Fair. It's about time someone put their foot down and said no to this travasty I more manga companies will join the boycott I am a strong fan of Bleach, Fullmental Alchemist, Naruto Shipputen.Ghost in the Shell:stand alone Complex, BloodX and Trinity Blood.Hell Girl and how about Speedgrapher and I hope this bill is griven the boot it diserve.

I am glad about this boycott. Not only is there likely a slippery slope for banning expression of ideas/topics on the basis of harmfulness, but there's no reasonable justification for singling out sexual crimes as harmful whereas depicting non-sexual crimes like murder or assault as not.
