It seems like all the Comic Book Defense Fund does is stand up and support child porn comics. Seems like a waste of funding an manpower.

Which, again, reinforces that Canada is not the 51st state!
Laws are made by men, though. And men are not infallible. In this case, the ones who can change these laws are Canadian citizens. So, until then, for foreigners, when in Rome....
Yeah, you go do that. While you're at it, put on conservative Muslim robes and only shout "Allahu Akbar!" Let us know how it went. |

The bottom line when traveling to Canada or Australia is not to bring any anime or manga with you. These two countries are not anime and manga friendly, despite ANN's Australian web site, and are trying to out "Puritan" the United States.
The nature of the charges mean if found guilty he will not be spending days or weeks in jail, but years. It is not worth jail in these foreign countries, just to bring your anime or manga reading with you. Canada and Australia should just ban anime and manga outright, that way there would be no arrests due to differing interpretations. |

Of course, then that frees them up to harass other people over trivial things. |

I guess it's time for another round of "let's all loose our shit on the internet because the world is not a magical libertarian paradise". I hate to break it to you guys but this is how the world works. There is a ton of shit you can do that will land you in prison regardless of whether it directly hurts anyone. (And that's not just the US or Canada or Australia. It's pretty much every country). You don't have to like this (I know I don't) but we can probably do away with all the dramatics and fear mongering every time something like this comes up. |

Way to kill the mood. I was all set to post dramatics and fear mongering when the internet ate my post and showed your reply instead. ICv2 reports that the manga was a Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha doujinshi. After some consideration (and since it's all typed out on a separate text editor), I've decided to post my dramatics and fear mongering below. Now censored with spoiler tags. Behold! (or not) spoiler[ A Psychologist pulls ink blots from his desk drawer. "What is this a picture of?" he asks the patient. The patient answers, "That's a schoolgirl stripping." The Psychologist states, "very interesting." He shows the next ink blot, asking "What is this a picture of?" The patient answers, "That's a schoolgirl masturbating." The Psychologists reveals the third ink blot and asks, "What is this a picture of?" The patient answers, "That's a schoolgirl gangbang." The Psychologist states, "You seem to have issues." The patient yells, "Me? You're the one with a desk drawer full of child porn!" Whether you find the ink blots creepy or arousing probably says a lot about you. But either way, they're just ink blots. People should not be imprisoned just for having ink blots. ] |

First, they defend any artistic free speech related case. Second, even if they did just that it would still be a very worthy cause. Because for one thing, how do you even tell the difference between 15 y.o. and 18 y.o drawing? Like I mentioned how would you classify Nagi from Kannagi? And if there's no rational response when no one is hurt, why even have such a law that can ruin someone's life?
Ironically, the saying about when in Rome applies to being more free, as a way of getting over inhibitions. "The more laws, the less justice." - Cicero, a Roman
It's not fear mongering since the fear and the severe consequences are real and can easily affect people. If people do nothing, then nothing changes. Freedoms are easily lost with this kind of attitude. Look at alcohol prohibition in the US, NO politician at the time dared speak out against it. And now many decades after Marijuana was effectively outlawed in 1937, we are making progress. Simply raising awareness, debating consequences, and challenging laws at any opportunity are part of the effort in combating all forms of oppression. In fact, the CBLDF states: "While this case won’t set a US precedent, it can inform whatever precedent is eventually set. This case is also important with respect to artistic merit in the Canadian courts, and a good decision could bring Canadian law closer to US law in that respect. " |

Could someone find out just what franchise the images were from? I'd be curious to learn if it was something that's license over here or if it was scalations of something unlicensed.

The first two anime were licensed here, but none of the manga, and especially not doujin. |

TO ALL OF THE DOUCHBAGS THAT THINK THAT ANIME NEEDS TO RUN ON THEIR TASTES:
SHUT THE fudge UP AND GO AWAY. YOU'RE NOT HELPING ANYTHING. And anyways, wow. I have nothing I need to comment on. You know what I want to do? I want to bring a copy of Yotsuba on board a plane and see how much controversy I'll spark up. Just to piss the all of the ignorant prudes and burnt out shells of people, to show how stupid they are and how much of suckoffs they are to each other. Seriously. And another thing I would love to do is to read Yotsuba near a douchebag of a guy watching the latest in FOX's wannabe 21 Jump Street police dramas, and make the person feel like a wasted, soulless loser. Not like I'm better, but there are people that deserve what's coming to them. |

If it is doujin, that would explain much... I've seen some of Negima! and while very amusing, and well written within the context of the story... the kid is still 10, and the girls after him are still 14...
It's going to be illegal some places, and not others. The important thing to keep in mind is this... They CAN and MAY search and electronic device. This is a bad precedent, that effects not just personal devices, but also business devices. Got a plan for a revolutionary TOKOMAK power station? The laptop may disappear. or it's contents duplicated, in the interest of any nation's "national security". The very fact that they got on his laptop should be concerning... If he is a normal person, but a programmer, he likely had password protection. Maybe even encryption. But also like many reasonable people, when asked by law enforcement to open it, he may have complied. In many places you are not required to comply, but if you do, you are completely open to charges for anything found on it. OTOH, stating that they will need a search warrent in order to open it, will probably cause them to sieze the device, and have it cracked. even if there is nothing on it, you may not see it again, or in one piece. In business, and personal computing, you're best bet is either to cary a sanitized laptop with only what you need on it, or don't take one at all. For some purposes you could set up a dummy account on the laptop that demonstrates to the police/whatever that the machine is fully usable, without allowing them into a more protected area. Dunno what made them suspicious of him... he may have just been acting stupidly... but this is like coming back from Comiket with a suitcase full of doujin... they don't care if a vampire is 500 if she looks like a really stacked 10 year old... Kepping stuff in 'the cloud' may be a good bet for a while only till they bust that. The only way to keep this from happening is to defend when people have this problem. it's not that the defence fund is defending ecchi kidstuff, but that you have to defend everything. The guy could have 100gigs of stuff, with only one GoSick doujin, and that would be enough to make life hard... As Chris Handley found out. |

There has to be hundreds of business people who carry laptops in and out of airports. Apart from X-rays to see inside for IED's, I can't see that many Border guards holding up hundreds of passengers whilst they check a guy's files content for "bad things". It had to be a random search and they got lucky, and he got unlucky, Or they had a tip-off from someone. |
