The flake reminds me of the time someone forked our lawn one winter in high school... that's when you poke plastic forks all over someone's lawn. Anyhow, we opted to rake them up in the afternoon, took like 5, 10 minutes... but in the process, me and my sister realized that someone went out, got 2-4 bags of plastic forks, and probably spent at least a couple hours forcing them into the half-frozen dirt (it was winter). We concluded that was a lot of effort for a 'huh' and 10 minutes of raking.
I rather like manhwa, personally... many years ago I found a book called 'demon diary' at the store- I looked at the first page, and instantly fell in love with the art and bought it. I fell in love all over again when I learned it was about a newbie demon lord who couldn't pull off being evil. I feel bad for anyone who passes just because 'it isn't Japanese'. Oddly enough though, I've found it's much easier to get casual/non-fans to read manhwa than manga, simply becuase it reads left-to-right. I actually had an anime-watching manager once who avoided manga becuase he had trouble with the right-to-left thing. I brought him a manhwa (Ragnarok), which he pretended to be happy about until I mentioned it was Korean and therefore 'not backwards', at which point he was genuinely happy and really enjoyed the book. |

Um... Or, you know, you could branch out, just a teensy bit, and maybe, have a go at something just a tiny bit different, maybe just this once, if you're feeling wild and adventurous? |

It seems that the high school years and college years are different between US and Japan. In the US, we mostly like to look back to our college years, while in Japan they like to look back to their high school years. |

Interesting too that they are each considered the most difficult parts of their education system.

That flake has to have set some sort of a FOTW record. In the time I've been reading Answerman most, if not all of the flakes, have been immature, incoherent, and downright baka, but this guy? This guy's on a self serving chrusade to vilify you Brian with a vengence only he, and maybe you know about. What he's written is catamount to stalking. Only a stalker would invest that amount of time and effort into categorising an entire year's worth of replies. One thing's clear; he hates you with a jilted lover's passion. I hope he never finds out where you live and work mate. That bloke's got some serious mental issues he needs to get over, or maybe he is a she, which has its own implications.

The best thing about the flake of the week is that the person kept reading even though it was obvious they disliked the column. I love it when people do that.
On the subject of anime appealing to a certain age, I can only say "so what?" I still enjoy watching Cartoon Network cartoons, Pokemon, Ninja Turtles, various shonen anime and many other things TARGETED for young people. Just because they are TARGETED for young people doesn't mean older people are excluded from enjoying them. Besides, there are occasionally anime that older audiences can enjoy. Right now I am enjoying Tiger & Bunny, but I still enjoy Naruto. Either way, I'm happy. I watch these shows not because of suspended adolescence, but because I enjoy the fantasy worlds they have created. |

As one of the older fans on the board, I can honestly say that high school settings don't really bother me, as long as the story is at least somewhat worthwhile. I really enjoy anime as an escapist means, since things haven't exactly been rosy for me for a real long time, popping in some entertaining show, regardless of its pedigree is almost theraputic for me. As long as it entertains, its good in my book.

I can enjoy shows with adolescents or adolescence, but it has to be done right. I like idealized early adolescence to a certain degree, as can be seen in R.O.D, and I like No. 6, where the plot effectively excludes any sort of schoolboy setting. On the other hand I couldn't stand Clannad or Kimagure Orange Road, because High Skool Komedy is not my cup of tea. I was also home schooled which might affect my appreciation a bit.

Hoowee, Flake of the millennium!
I wonder if one day hell realize that a) I don't think Answerman would be sad that flakes grew a brain ad b) if you've read EVERY Answerman and you' read an anime site, talking about anime fans growing up and getting laid makes NO sense. Are you insulting yourself, other anime fans, or the column? |

Its part of internet culture now to be extremely offensive to anyone to make yourself feel better. And the more and more crazy, extensive you do it, the more people around you cheer you on. And of course, you do create an over-compensating mindset of your self to pull that off. By calling anime fans virginal losers, by default, Mr. Flake is saying that he is swimming in sex, hung like an elephant, makes a million dollars a month, has a harem that makes pornstars look like lepers, and is basically Superman compared to you useless losers. Which makes it real funny that Mr. Neo takes time out of his busy day of screwing and being God to you petty mortals to rag on some dude on an anime website. Really? No, seriously........REALLY? |

As I've stated before, as someone who watches plenty of American live-action TV and movies, I like anime's focus on teenage casts as opposed to America's focus on adult casts, it's a nice balance. Besides, I don't really consider age to be relevant in terms of being able to relate to a character.

I've always liked Japanese High School-based manga because Japanese HS has never really felt "real" to me. It's too different than any of my school experience so it just winds up as fantasy. Same goes for anything (not just manga and anime) set in boarding schools.

I really wish I had the spare time to read and respond to the work and opinions of people that I don't like. It just boggles my mind that people would waste their time like that. I like to get game reviews from IGN, and for pretty much every review, there are people who don't even argue against the opinion of the reviewer. They just post something like, "IGN is stupid." Seriously, why keep coming back if it bothers them so much? |

I hate to keep bringing up this week's Flake but it does remind me a little of this:
http://omg.yahoo.com/blogs/thefamous/fight-fight-paula-deen-tells-anthony-bourdain-to-get-a-life/1912 Obviously even famous people are a little jealous of people with a little bit more fame (and more lucrative endorsement deals!) But I hate giving attention to this, so! About how anime seems to have a lot of teenage characters! TBH I'm not really sure what that person is asking about. I kind of thought that they were aimed at teenagers, so they had teenager protagonists. Also I think a lot of older viewers enjoy them as well. A lot of it is high school nostalgia, I think (see Haruhi Suzumiya). |
